Day 6: Art, Baths, and Bliss: A Day of Cultural Immersion on Naoshima
Discover Naoshima's artistic heart with a day of unique art installations, culinary delights, and tranquil moments on this island gem.
Finding Harmony in Honmura's Art and Tranquility
Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Naoshima's artistic soul, a journey that took me through winding streets, captivating art installations, and moments of pure relaxation. It's amazing how this small island manages to pack such a powerful cultural punch.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Little Plum, a charming café near the Miyanoura Port. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of a local culinary experience were the perfect way to kickstart my exploration. Little Plum, with its vibrant atmosphere, was the ideal spot to fuel up before venturing into the artistic wonders that awaited me in Honmura. I opted for their homemade dry curry, a flavorful dish that provided a delightful introduction to Naoshima's local cuisine. Sipping on a cup of coffee while watching the early morning light dance on the harbor, I felt a sense of excitement for the day ahead. It reminded me of mornings back home in the Maldives, where the ocean always sets the tone for the day.

After breakfast, I made my way to Honmura, the eastern district of Naoshima, known for its Art House Project. The walk itself was a treat, with the island's natural beauty unfolding at every turn. The crisp March air, a refreshing change from Toronto's late winter chill, made the journey even more enjoyable. I remembered to grab my camera, sketchbook, and comfortable walking shoes, essentials for a day of exploring Naoshima. I did wish I had remembered my raincoat, as the sky looked a bit ominous.
My first stop was the Honmura Lounge & Archive, the information center for the Art House Project. This lounge is more than just a place to get tickets; it's a hub of information and a starting point for understanding the project's mission. Ryue Nishizawa designed the space, preserving most of the original architecture. Here, I secured my tickets and gathered information about the various art houses scattered throughout the town. The staff was incredibly helpful, providing insights into the artists and the concepts behind each installation. I even picked up a few books and goods related to the project, eager to delve deeper into the world of Naoshima's art.

Armed with my map and a sense of anticipation, I set out to explore the Art House Project. The project involves the restoration of empty houses, temples, and shrines, transforming them into unique art spaces that blend seamlessly with the traditional Japanese neighborhood. The beauty of this project lies in its ability to weave art into the fabric of daily life, creating a dialogue between the past and the present. As I wandered through the streets of Honmura, I felt a sense of discovery with each new installation.
One of the highlights of the day was the Walking Ark, a thought-provoking installation that challenged my perception of space and time. The artist's vision was both captivating and unsettling, prompting me to reflect on the nature of existence and the human condition. The experience was a reminder of why I love traveling solo – the freedom to immerse myself in art and culture at my own pace, without the constraints of a group.

Next, I ventured to the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima, an outdoor work at the Benesse House Museum. Although the bathing experience is typically reserved for Benesse House hotel guests and available only on Sundays, the site itself was a fascinating blend of Feng Shui principles and artistic expression. I could imagine how relaxing it would be to soak in the Chinese herbal medicinal bath while gazing out at the Seto Inland Sea. It was a moment of tranquility amidst a day of exploration, a reminder to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the present moment.

For lunch, I decided to try Gumbo Hut Shioya, a Cajun restaurant known for its vibrant atmosphere and retro charm. Stepping inside was like entering a different world, a delightful escape from the traditional Japanese setting. The warm ambiance and the sounds of classic rock and roll created a unique dining experience. I ordered their signature gumbo, which was packed with flavor and hearty portions. It was a delicious and unexpected culinary adventure, a testament to Naoshima's ability to surprise and delight.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
In the late afternoon, I found myself at the Honmura Lounge & Archive once again, seeking a moment of respite and reflection. This time, I decided to indulge in a drink at the bar, hoping to mingle with locals and fellow travelers. The lounge was buzzing with activity, a mix of conversations and laughter filling the air. I struck up a conversation with a local artist who shared insights into Naoshima's art scene and the challenges of preserving its unique cultural identity. It was a fascinating exchange, a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with people and learning from their experiences.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Restaurant EN for dinner, eager to savor the flavors of Naoshima's local cuisine. The restaurant's elegant setting and attentive service created a memorable dining experience. I opted for a seafood dish, eager to taste the fresh catches of the Seto Inland Sea. The flavors were exquisite, a testament to the chef's skill and the quality of the ingredients. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion, a celebration of Naoshima's artistic spirit and culinary delights.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Naoshima had captured my heart. The island's unique blend of art, nature, and culture had created an experience that was both enriching and inspiring. As I walked back to My Lodge Naoshima, I felt a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this hidden gem. I thought about Aisha and Zayn and how much they would enjoy this place. Perhaps one day, I'll bring them here to share in the magic of Naoshima.

I'm also looking forward to trying Yayoda for breakfast, NaoPAM/ Shima-Shoku-Do Miyanda for lunch, and Okonomiyaki Umikko for dinner. And of course, I'll be sure to stop by Naoshima Shop Umihotaru for some souvenirs to take back home. For now, I'll rest and dream of the artistic wonders that await me on day seven of my solo art exploration on Naoshima Island. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to discover new places, and to share my experiences with the world.
Naoshima has taught me that:
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the most unexpected places.
It has been a day to remember.
Until tomorrow,
Mohamed
