Naoshima's Artistic Heartbeat
Today was a deep dive into the soul of Naoshima, a day where art wasn't just observed but experienced. It's amazing how this small island manages to blend creativity with the tranquility of island life, and I was eager to explore every corner. From quirky art installations to the simple pleasure of local cuisine, today was a testament to Naoshima's unique charm.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at maimai. As someone who enjoys starting the day with a good meal, especially before a day of exploring, I was excited to try their local specialties. The cafe's cozy atmosphere and the promise of a Naoshima Burger were too enticing to pass up. It was a delicious way to fuel up for the artistic adventures that lay ahead.
First on the itinerary was the Art House Project: Haisha. Wandering through Honmura, where the Art House Project is located, felt like stepping into a living, breathing art installation. Haisha, once a dentist's home and office, now transformed into a surreal art space by Shinro Ohtake, was a highlight. The eclectic mix of styles—sculpture, painting, collage—created an immersive experience that played with my senses. I spent a good hour wandering through the house, discovering hidden details and letting the art spark my imagination. It was a reminder of how art can breathe new life into forgotten spaces, blending history with contemporary expression.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next, it was time to seek out Naoshima's iconic pumpkins. The Yellow Pumpkin, a symbol of the island, was a must-see. As I walked towards the Benesse House area, the anticipation grew. There it was, sitting proudly against the backdrop of the Seto Inland Sea. Its vibrant yellow and polka dots were striking against the blue waters. I took my time, admiring the sculpture from different angles, capturing its essence in photographs. The contrast between the natural beauty of the island and Kusama's whimsical creation was simply captivating. It's no wonder this pumpkin has become such a beloved symbol of Naoshima.

Of course, no visit to Naoshima is complete without seeing the Red Pumpkin, located near the Miyanoura Port. This pumpkin, with its distinctive polka dots and inviting interior, offered a different experience. I stepped inside, looking up through the holes, and saw the world transformed through Kusama's eyes. It was a playful and immersive encounter with art, one that brought a smile to my face.

Before venturing to Art Island Center, I stopped by Cin.na.mon for a quick lunch. I opted for the Naoshima curry, eager to taste the local seafood. The cafe's cozy interior and the promise of fresh flavors were inviting. The curry was delicious, a blend of local ingredients that captured the essence of the island's culinary scene. It was a satisfying meal that energized me for the afternoon ahead.
After lunch, I visited the Art Island Center, a gallery, bookshop, and art center that explores the identity and resilience of the islands of the Setouchi region. As someone interested in cultural preservation, I found the center's mission particularly compelling. I enjoyed browsing the art books and learning about the center's projects, which aim to facilitate conversations about globally significant topics. It was inspiring to see how art can be used to connect people and promote dialogue.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Perma_Naoshima for dinner. Having heard about their commitment to using local ingredients, I was excited to experience their cuisine. I was not disappointed. The ramen was exceptional, a flavorful and comforting dish that showcased the best of the region's produce. The cozy atmosphere of the restaurant added to the experience, making it a perfect ending to a day filled with art and exploration.
Reflecting on the day, I'm struck by how Naoshima seamlessly blends art, nature, and community. The Art House Project, the iconic pumpkins, and the local cuisine all contribute to the island's unique identity. It's a place where art is not confined to museums but spills out into the streets, inviting everyone to engage and experience. I am already excited about tomorrow, when I plan to visit Naoshima Public Bath “I Love Yu” and Miyanoura Gallery 6. I might even check out BAR Queen's-Q Naoshima in the evening.
Naoshima has a way of captivating the senses and sparking the imagination. I am grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in its artistic heartbeat and look forward to discovering what tomorrow brings.
During my exploration today, I couldn't help but reflect on a quote by Yayoi Kusama:
My art originates from hallucinations only I can see. I translate the hallucinations and obsessional images that plague me into sculptures and paintings.
It's a powerful reminder of how art can be a means of transforming personal struggles into something beautiful and meaningful. Kusama's pumpkins, with their vibrant colors and playful polka dots, are a testament to this transformative power, inviting us to see the world in new and unexpected ways.
As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am reminded of how fortunate I am to experience this unique blend of art and island life. I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you tomorrow.
One thing I did miss having on this trip so far was my raincoat. March weather can be unpredictable, and I’ll need to remember to pack it for future trips. Also, I haven’t had many opportunities to use Japanese phrases, so I’ll try to incorporate some tomorrow!
