Exploring the Soul of Naoshima: Temples, Art, and Culinary Delights

Today on Naoshima, I ventured beyond the iconic museums and installations to discover the island's more secluded and spiritual corners. It was a day of quiet contemplation, artistic appreciation, and indulging in the local flavors. As a software developer, stepping away from the digital world and immersing myself in such a serene environment is incredibly refreshing. I was excited to see a different side of Naoshima, one that blends seamlessly with its artistic heart.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at EAT LOCAL 直島食堂 (EAT LOCAL Naoshima Shokudo). The name itself was enticing, promising an authentic taste of the island. Overlooking the Seto Inland Sea, the restaurant offered a simple yet satisfying meal of local udon noodles and seasonal seafood. The sea breeze and the gentle morning light made it a perfect start to a day of exploration. It reminded me of mornings back in the Maldives, where fresh seafood and the ocean are integral to daily life. The restaurant is located at Tsutsujiso, which is “the seaside park to stay” at the town bus terminal. The restaurant offers seasonal dishes using “Local foods” from Setouchi, as well as a wide variety of drinks and alcoholic beverages. They also have vegetarian options, which is great to know for future travels with Aisha. The friendly staff and the unpretentious atmosphere made me feel right at home.

After breakfast, I set out to find the Gokurakuji Temple. Tucked away in the Honmura district, this serene Buddhist retreat offered a moment of peace and reflection. The temple, surrounded by lush greenery, exuded a sense of timelessness. I took my time wandering through the grounds, admiring the traditional architecture and the intricate details of the temple's design. The quietude was broken only by the gentle rustling of leaves and the occasional chirping of birds. It was a far cry from the bustling city of Toronto, and I found myself appreciating the simplicity and tranquility of the moment. The Gokurakuji Temple is a serene Buddhist retreat on Naoshima Island, blending spiritual heritage with stunning natural beauty. The temple was founded in 1259 by Ninshō and has been restored and rebuilt many times since then. As a shrine and temple lover, I was content with a walk around the area, which is perfect for photography lovers, with picturesque scenes around every corner.

Art isn't just about what you see in a museum; it's about finding beauty and meaning in the everyday, in the quiet corners of the world.

Next on my itinerary was Shipyard Works by Shinro Otake. This open-air installation, located near the Benesse House, was a striking contrast to the temple's serenity. Otake's work, constructed from repurposed materials from a former shipyard, was a bold and imaginative display of creativity. The sculptures, with their raw and industrial aesthetic, stood in stark contrast to the island's natural beauty. I spent a considerable amount of time exploring the installation, marveling at Otake's ability to transform discarded objects into thought-provoking works of art. Shipyard Works is a remarkable artistic installation located on the picturesque island of Naoshima, Japan. This unique tourist attraction seamlessly integrates art with the island's industrial heritage, creating a visually stunning experience for visitors. The exhibit not only showcases Otake's artistic vision but also invites contemplation on the relationship between art and the environment.

For lunch, I opted for a quick and casual meal at Tee's DELI GROCERY. This unassuming deli offered a variety of sandwiches and light bites, perfect for a midday refuel. I chose a falafel sandwich, a nod to my love for global cuisine. The sandwich was fresh and flavorful, and the cozy atmosphere of the deli made it a pleasant experience. Tee's DELI GROCERY is known for its vegan and vegetarian options, as well as its selection of cold beers and good alcohols. It's a popular spot for a quick and tasty meal.

As the day wound down, I treated myself to dinner at Luke's Table. Located at My Lodge Naoshima where I am staying, this restaurant offered a more refined dining experience. The menu featured a range of pizzas and grilled dishes, with a focus on local ingredients. I decided on a seafood pizza, eager to savor the flavors of the Seto Inland Sea. The pizza was delicious, with a crispy thin crust and fresh, flavorful toppings. The modern interior and the warmth of the wood stove created a cozy and inviting atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration. The freshly baked crust is thin and crispy, and the seafood pizzas, in particular, were delightful in texture. The restaurant offers exquisite pizza and grill dishes that make the most of the rich local ingredients from Naoshima.

To cap off the evening, I ventured out to Cin.na.mon, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. The bar was a short walk from my lodge, and I was immediately drawn in by its cozy and inviting ambiance. I ordered a Naoshima beer, eager to taste the local brew. The beer was crisp and refreshing, and the bar's laid-back vibe made it easy to strike up conversations with fellow travelers. Cin.na.mon is a stylish restaurant and bar located near Miyanoura Port in Naoshima. It offers a unique dining experience with traditional tatami rooms and serves delicious curried seafood. The restaurant has a funky ambiance and is known for its excellent food, including generously portioned dishes like the Naoshima seafood curry and nanban chili mayo fried chicken. The Naoshima Curry served at “cin. na. mon” is a dish brimming with the rich flavors of fresh seafood, earning rave reviews from visitors. The curry roux boasts a deep, spicy flavor with an aromatic richness that fills the senses. Its perfect balance of spice and creaminess is truly appetizing. The dish features an abundance of fresh seafood, such as squid and shrimp, sourced locally from Naoshima. Each bite offers a delightful texture and the essence of the sea, as the seafood's umami infuses the roux, creating a harmonious blend that captures the bounty of the Seto Inland Sea.

As I sipped my beer, I reflected on the day's experiences. From the spiritual serenity of Gokurakuji Temple to the industrial artistry of Shipyard Works, Naoshima had once again surprised me with its diverse offerings. The island's ability to blend art, nature, and culture was truly remarkable. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this unique destination, and I looked forward to discovering even more of its hidden gems in the days to come. I also made a mental note to share these experiences with Aisha and Zayn, as I knew they would appreciate the island's beauty and charm.

Tomorrow, I'm planning a trip to Teshima Art Museum and Kasaneiwa. I’ve heard great things and am excited to explore another island in the Seto Inland Sea!
