Finding Peace and Treasures in Kyoto

Today was a beautiful blend of spiritual reflection and retail therapy, a true Kyoto experience. Jürgen and I started our day with a hearty breakfast, eager to explore more of this enchanting city. The mix of ancient traditions and modern life here continues to captivate me.

Our first stop was the magnificent Heian Shrine. The vibrant colors and grand architecture were truly breathtaking. As we walked through the expansive courtyard, I couldn't help but marvel at the scale and detail of the buildings. The shrine's gardens were a peaceful oasis, with meticulously manicured landscapes and serene ponds. It was a perfect way to start the day, grounding myself in the tranquility of Kyoto's spiritual heart.

We wandered through the gardens, enjoying the early spring blooms. Although the cherry blossoms are still a few days away from their peak, there were hints of pink and white that promised the spectacle to come. I made a mental note to check if there were any special events happening at the shrine during our visit; I read about a Sakura Oto Yoru concert that sounded magical, but it seems it will take place after we have left Kyoto unfortunately. The scar above my left eyebrow, a memento from a childhood escapade in Echternach, seemed to tingle as I imagined young Sophie exploring these very gardens with us one day. It’s these little moments of connection that make traveling so special.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its famous landmarks, but in the quiet moments of reflection found along its hidden paths.

Next on our itinerary was the Philosopher's Path, a scenic route that follows a canal lined with cherry trees. The path was named after a famous Japanese philosopher who used to meditate while walking along it. As we strolled along the path, I could feel the peaceful energy of the place. The canal's gentle flow and the rustling of the trees created a soothing soundtrack. It was easy to see why this place was so conducive to contemplation.

Even though the cherry blossoms weren't in full bloom yet, the Philosopher's Path was still incredibly beautiful. The trees were just beginning to bud, and there were glimpses of pink and white that hinted at the explosion of color to come. Jürgen and I walked hand in hand, enjoying the quiet beauty of the surroundings. We stopped at a small tea house along the way, where we savored a cup of matcha and a traditional Japanese sweet. It was a perfect moment of serenity, a chance to slow down and appreciate the simple pleasures of life.

Our exploration continued to Nanzen-ji Temple, another gem in Kyoto's temple collection. The temple's massive Sanmon gate was an impressive sight, and the Zen gardens were a masterclass in minimalist design. As I sat on the veranda, gazing at the carefully raked gravel and strategically placed rocks, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. It was a reminder that sometimes, less is more.

We explored the various sub-temples within the Nanzen-ji complex, each with its own unique charm. Jürgen was particularly fascinated by the aqueduct, a brick structure that was built during the Meiji era to transport water to Kyoto. It was an unexpected sight in a temple complex, but it added to the unique character of the place. I learned that Nanzen-in is closed for roof repairs, but Tenjuan was open. I also read about a secret waterfall grotto behind the temple, but we didn't have time to explore it today. Perhaps next time!

After a day of temples and tranquility, it was time for some retail therapy. We headed to Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street, a bustling arcade filled with shops selling everything from traditional crafts to trendy fashion. The energy of the place was a stark contrast to the serenity of the temples, but it was a welcome change of pace. The Shinkyogoku Shopping Street was established in 1872, and it is the second oldest shopping street in Japan after Asakusa Nakamise in Tokyo. The street is covered, which makes it convenient for shopping regardless of the weather.

I was on the hunt for souvenirs for Sophie and my friends back in Berlin. I found a beautiful silk scarf for Sophie, adorned with a delicate cherry blossom pattern. For my friends, I picked up some traditional Japanese sweets and a few bottles of sake. Jürgen, ever the architect, was fascinated by the intricate designs of the traditional crafts. He bought a small wooden model of a traditional Japanese house, which he plans to display in his office.

We ended our shopping spree at a local tea shop, where we sampled a variety of Japanese teas. The shop owner was incredibly knowledgeable, and he shared with us the history and nuances of each tea. I left with a bag full of new teas to try, eager to share them with my friends back home.

For dinner, we indulged in a multi-course Kaiseki experience at Kikunoi Roan, a culinary journey that highlighted the season's freshest ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. The delicate balance of flavors and textures was a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.

To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Bar Fishbowl, a quirky bar known for its extensive selection of Japanese whiskeys and craft beers. Jürgen, a whiskey aficionado, was in his element, sampling a variety of rare and unique blends. The bar's atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, and we struck up conversations with several locals and fellow travelers. I enjoyed a glass of Umeshu (plum wine), a sweet and refreshing drink that was the perfect nightcap. The bar is known for its fish theme, which I found a bit odd, but Jürgen enjoyed the selection of Japanese whiskeys.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. Kyoto has a way of captivating the soul, of reminding us to slow down and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us. It’s a city that seamlessly blends the ancient and the modern, the spiritual and the commercial, the serene and the bustling. And tomorrow, we are off to explore Yasaka Shrine, Maruyama Park and Hanamikoji Street. I can't wait to see what adventures await us!

I am also grateful that I remembered to pack my camera, even though I forgot the travel adapter and sunscreen. I’ll need to buy those tomorrow. The camera will be essential for capturing the beauty of Yasaka Shrine and Maruyama Park.

Until tomorrow,
Monique
