Spirits, Serenity, and Steaks: A Kyoto Daydream

Today was a day of iconic Kyoto experiences, a blend of spiritual immersion, tranquil reflection, and a delightful exploration of the city's famed geisha district. From the thousands of vermilion torii gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine to the peaceful gardens of Tōfuku-ji Temple and the captivating streets of Gion, Kyoto has once again woven its magic.

Our day began with an early start to visit the renowned Fushimi Inari Shrine. Even though it was a Sunday, we wanted to get there before the main crowds. The crisp morning air was invigorating as we made our way to the seemingly endless path of vibrant red torii gates that snake up the mountainside. I’d read so much about this place, seen countless photos, but nothing truly prepares you for the sheer scale and impact of it all. Jürgen, ever the architect, was particularly fascinated by the structure and the way the light played through the wood. I was more interested in the history of it all, and what it meant to the people that walked this path for centuries. The further we climbed, the more the crowds thinned, and a sense of peaceful contemplation washed over us. It was a truly immersive experience, and I felt a deep connection to the history and spirituality of the place. I even managed to find a quiet spot to jot down some notes in my trusty notebook – inspiration for future blog posts, no doubt!

It's not about the destination, but the journey, especially when that journey is through thousands of vermilion gates.

After descending from Fushimi Inari, our next stop was Tōfuku-ji Temple, a serene contrast to the vibrant energy of the shrine. The temple grounds offered a tranquil escape, with meticulously designed Zen gardens and historic buildings that whispered tales of centuries past. We strolled through the gardens, admiring the carefully placed stones and the moss-covered landscapes. The bare trees stood in stark contrast to the manicured gardens, a reminder that even in the depths of almost-spring, beauty can be found. The Hojo Garden was particularly impressive, each side presenting a different world through abstract architectural techniques. It was the perfect place for quiet reflection, a moment to process the morning's experiences and prepare for the afternoon's adventures. Jürgen, always one for finding a peaceful corner, sat on a bench and sketched in his notebook, capturing the essence of the gardens in his own unique way.

Lunch called, and we headed to Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi. We opted for Kobe beef, and it was divine. It was a welcome opportunity to relax and refuel before diving into the afternoon's exploration. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. I savored every bite of the melt-in-your-mouth beef, appreciating the artistry and skill that went into preparing such a culinary masterpiece. Jürgen, ever the wine enthusiast, paired our meal with a local sake, adding another layer of cultural immersion to our dining experience.

With renewed energy, we ventured into Gion, Kyoto's famed geisha district. The narrow streets were alive with the buzz of locals and tourists alike, all eager to catch a glimpse of a geiko or maiko gracefully gliding by. We wandered through the historic streets, admiring the traditional wooden machiya houses and the quaint teahouses that lined the way. While we didn't spot any geisha, the atmosphere alone was enough to transport us back in time. It felt like stepping into a movie set, every corner offering a picture-perfect view. I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like in this district centuries ago, the secrets and stories hidden behind those elegant facades. It was like stepping back in time, and I found myself completely captivated by the atmosphere. The Haru no Odori spring dances are starting soon, I read, but sadly not today.

As the sun began to set, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dinner at Premium Pound Gion. I was excited to try the aged black-haired wagyu steaks. The restaurant was located on Hanamikoji Street, and the ambiance was elegant and refined. We were seated at the counter, where we could watch the chefs expertly preparing our meals. The teppanyaki was amazing, and the Kobe beef was delicious. Jürgen, of course, enjoyed the wine list, and chose a red wine that was recommended by the sommelier. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion and exploration.

We rounded out the evening at The Roots of all evil, a local bar, for a nightcap. It was a standing gin bar, and the cocktails were creative and delicious. We chatted with some of the other patrons, swapping travel stories and recommendations. The bar had a lively and welcoming atmosphere, and it was the perfect place to unwind after a long day of sightseeing. I especially enjoyed the unique blend of modern design and traditional Japanese aesthetics, creating a cozy and vibrant space.

Before heading back to the hotel, we did a spot of shopping at Kyoto Station ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store. I wanted to get Sophie a souvenir, as she is a big Kyoani fan. I managed to find a cute little charm. I hope she likes it!

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Kyoto Imperial Palace and its surrounding gardens. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing the Shugakuin Imperial Villa, as I've heard it's a stunning example of Japanese landscape architecture. I’m also excited to try Masayoshi Japanese Dining for breakfast, Chihana for lunch, and Yoshikawa for dinner. And of course, a visit to Kyoto LOFT and Bar Cordon Noir.

But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of Kyoto adventures. The city continues to surprise and delight me at every turn, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Kyoto is a city that truly captivates the senses, and today was a perfect example of its magic. From the spiritual immersion at Fushimi Inari to the tranquil beauty of Tōfuku-ji and the vibrant charm of Gion, every moment was a treasure. And with friends by my side, the experience was all the more special. As I reflect on the day, I'm filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible city and share its wonders with the world. Good night from Kyoto!
