Unveiling Kyoto's treasures: Kinkaku-ji's splendor, Nijō Castle's history, and a manga museum adventure. Join my cultural journey!
Kyoto's Glimmering Start
Day one in Kyoto, and what a start! The city embraced us with open arms, offering a sensory feast that blended ancient history with modern delights. Jürgen and I, along with our friends, dove headfirst into the cultural heart of Japan, exploring iconic landmarks and indulging in local flavors. The air was crisp, carrying the subtle scent of cherry blossoms, a promising prelude to the floral spectacle Kyoto is famed for. After a long flight, I almost forgot my travel adapter! Thankfully, one of my friends had an extra. Today was a testament to the beauty of spontaneity and the joy of shared experiences.
Our day began with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura. The restaurant was a cozy haven, with the aroma of freshly prepared Obanzai filling the air. It was the perfect start to immerse ourselves in the local culture. Jürgen particularly enjoyed the Obanzai buffet, praising the delicate balance of flavors and the freshness of the ingredients. We fuelled up for a day of exploration, eager to uncover the treasures of Kyoto.

Our first stop was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As we approached, the temple shimmered in the morning sun, its reflection dancing on the surface of the pond. It was a sight that truly took my breath away. The meticulous architecture and the serene landscape surrounding it created a sense of tranquility that was almost surreal. The gardens were beautifully manicured, and it was easy to imagine emperors strolling through them centuries ago. Jürgen, ever the architect, was fascinated by the design and construction of the pavilion, pointing out the intricate details and the seamless blend of nature and architecture.

Sometimes, the most beautiful things are those that reflect both the past and the present, creating a timeless harmony.
Next on our itinerary was Nijō Castle, a stark contrast to the gilded splendor of Kinkaku-ji. This UNESCO World Heritage site offered a glimpse into the lives of the shoguns and the political intrigue of feudal Japan. The vast complex, with its imposing gates and sprawling gardens, was a testament to the power and authority of the Tokugawa shogunate. We wandered through the Ninomaru Palace, marveling at the opulent interiors and the famed 'nightingale floors,' designed to chirp underfoot to alert the occupants to intruders. I found myself imagining the castle filled with samurai warriors and courtly intrigue. The contrast between the serene gardens and the imposing architecture was striking, a reflection of the complex dynamics of power in feudal Japan.

After immersing ourselves in history, we decided to embrace a more modern aspect of Japanese culture with a visit to the Kyoto International Manga Museum. As a translator, I've always admired the art of storytelling, and manga is a unique and vibrant medium. The museum was a treasure trove of comics, from vintage classics to contemporary masterpieces. I was particularly fascinated by the collection of international manga, showcasing the global influence of this art form. We spent hours browsing the shelves, discovering new artists and revisiting old favorites. I even considered getting a manga portrait drawn, but the booth was fully booked. Maybe next time! It was a fun and engaging experience, a reminder that culture is constantly evolving and adapting.

Lunch was a delightful affair at Katsukura - Kyoto Porta, a tonkatsu restaurant renowned for its crispy and flavorful pork cutlets. After hearing so much about Katsukura, I was excited to try their tonkatsu, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The pork was tender and juicy, the breading perfectly crisp, and the sauce a harmonious blend of sweet and savory. We enjoyed free refills of shredded cabbage, soup, and tea. Jürgen, a connoisseur of fine cuisine, declared it one of the best tonkatsu he had ever tasted. It was the perfect midday meal, a hearty and satisfying break from our sightseeing adventures.

In the late afternoon, we took a detour to the Kyoto Crafts Store, a charming shop filled with handcrafted goods. From delicate ceramics to intricate textiles, the store was a celebration of Japanese artistry. I picked up a few souvenirs, including a beautiful silk scarf and a hand-painted tea set. Jürgen, always practical, admired the craftsmanship and the attention to detail. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving traditional skills and supporting local artisans.

As evening approached, we sought refuge at The Common One Bar Kyoto, a cozy establishment known for its creative cocktails and intimate atmosphere. The bar was tucked away in a quiet alley, a hidden gem that exuded warmth and charm. We settled into comfortable armchairs and perused the extensive drink menu. I opted for a sake-based cocktail, while Jürgen chose a classic whiskey sour. The drinks were expertly crafted, the flavors perfectly balanced. It was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring. We chatted with the friendly bartenders, learning about the local nightlife and getting recommendations for tomorrow's adventures.

Dinner was at The Cellar Kyoto, a restaurant known for its innovative cuisine and intimate setting. We savored every bite, appreciating the creativity and skill of the chef. The atmosphere was romantic and sophisticated, the perfect setting for a memorable meal. As I reflect on our first day in Kyoto, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. The city has already captivated me with its beauty, its history, and its vibrant culture. I am eager to explore more of its hidden corners and uncover its many secrets. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kiyomizu-dera, Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, and I can't wait to see what adventures await. Though I am looking forward to the sights, I am also looking forward to another day of great food!
And now, as I sit here writing, I realize I forgot to buy sunscreen before leaving Berlin! I will need to remember to buy some tomorrow. I am so glad I brought my lightweight jacket, as the evenings here can get a little chilly.
But for now, it’s time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of exploration in this enchanting city. Until tomorrow!
