Wander through Kyoto's stunning gardens and ancient shrines. A peaceful escape into the heart of Japanese culture and natural beauty.
A Day of Tranquility in Kyoto
Today was a day dedicated to embracing the serene beauty of Kyoto, a welcome change of pace after the bustling city explorations of the past week. Jürgen always says I need to slow down and smell the roses, and today, I think I finally did. I ventured into the northern part of the city with my friends, seeking out the peaceful sanctuaries that Kyoto is so rightly famous for. It was a day filled with lush greenery, historical insights, and moments of quiet reflection.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Khaos Spice Diner. It's funny, isn't it? Starting a day of tranquility with a place called 'Khaos.' But trust me, the only chaos here was the explosion of flavors in their curry. The restaurant was spacious and brightly lit, with film posters plastered all over the wall. The reggae music gave it a rather chill vibe, without being too annoying. I opted for a mix of three different curries – a pork keema, a chicken curry, and a mushroom and ground beef concoction. The combination of Indian spices and Japanese dashi was simply divine, and the tart pickles on the side added a refreshing zest to every mouthful. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploring.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we made our way to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. Opened in 1924, it holds the distinction of being the earliest public botanical garden in Japan. As we strolled through the garden, I was immediately struck by the sheer variety of plant life. With 12,000 species of plants and 200 types of sakura, the Kyoto Botanical Garden is a perfect place to stroll, picnic and gain knowledge about nature. Although it's late March, the cherry blossoms were putting on a splendid show, with various shades of pink and white painting the landscape. I learned that the garden boasts over 500 cherry trees, some of which are over 50 years old, featuring varieties like Somei Yoshino, Ukon, and Weeping Cherry. The air was filled with a sweet fragrance, and the gentle breeze rustled the leaves, creating a soothing melody. It was a photographer’s dream, and I spent a good amount of time snapping pictures, trying to capture the ephemeral beauty of the blossoms. Jürgen would have loved this place; he always appreciates the artistry of nature.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences come from simply being present and appreciating the beauty that surrounds us.
Next on our itinerary was the Kamigamo Shrine, officially known as Kamo-wakeikazuchi Shrine. Founded in 678, this is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. As we approached the shrine, I could feel a sense of history and reverence in the air. The shrine is located near the sacred Mt. Koyama, where the deity Kamo Wakeikazuchi no Okami is said to have descended to earth. The architecture was stunning, with intricate details and vibrant vermilion accents contrasting beautifully with the surrounding greenery. I learned that Kamigamo Shrine was designated as one of two chief Shinto shrines for the former Yamashiro Province and that emperors would send messengers to report important events to the shrine's deities. We wandered through the grounds, admiring the various structures and taking in the peaceful atmosphere. The two sand cones, known as tatesuna, were particularly striking; they are believed to purify the sanctuary.

Our final stop of the day was the Shimogamo Shrine, whose formal name is Kamo-mioya Shrine. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is nestled in the Tadasu no Mori forest. While the exact origins of Shimogamo Shrine are shrouded in mystery, its existence predates even the reign of Emperor Sujin (97-30 BC). The Tadasu-no-Mori forest, with its towering trees and winding streams, created a serene and mystical ambiance. I discovered that Shimogamo Shrine enshrines the ancestors of the Kamo clan and that it was once a single entity with Kamigamo Shrine. The shrine complex was beautiful, with its traditional architecture and meticulously maintained grounds. I was particularly drawn to the Kawai Shrine, an auxiliary shrine dedicated to the goddess of beauty. Here, visitors can purchase ema votive tablets shaped like hand mirrors and draw a face on them, praying for beauty both inside and out. I couldn't resist getting one, and I carefully applied my makeup to the mirror before writing my wish on the back. Sophie would have found this particularly amusing, given her interest in beauty and fashion.

After a day of immersing ourselves in nature and history, we decided to indulge in some retail therapy at the Kyoto Station Daikaidan (Great Staircase). This architectural marvel within Kyoto Station is not just a functional element; it is a work of art that captures the essence of Kyoto's innovative spirit. The Daikaidan is surrounded by shops and eateries, making it an excellent stop for those looking to indulge in local cuisine or pick up souvenirs. The Great Staircase hosts various art installations and events, adding to its allure. I picked up a few souvenirs for Sophie and Jürgen, as well as some local sweets for us to enjoy back at the hotel.

Before heading back to Hotel Gimmond Kyoto, we decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife. We stopped by The Roots of all evil., a gin bar located in the basement of the Kyoto Tower building. The bar boasts over 100 different types of craft gin from all across Japan and around the world. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, with a stylish interior inspired by the roots drawing water from the earth. I opted for their signature cocktail, “THE ROOTS,” featuring burdock and dandelion root-infused gin. It was a unique and flavorful concoction, with earthy notes and a hint of spice. It was the perfect way to end a day of tranquility, adding a touch of excitement and sophistication to our evening.

As I sit here in my hotel room, reflecting on the day, I feel a sense of peace and contentment. Kyoto has a way of captivating the soul, of drawing you in with its beauty and history. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kodaiji Temple, Gion Corner, and Pontocho. I am excited to see what new adventures await us, but for now, I am grateful for the moments of serenity and inspiration that today has brought. Perhaps I’ll even try my hand at knitting a small token of my appreciation for this beautiful city. It’s funny how travel can inspire even the most unlikely of hobbies!
