Gion's Gentle Embrace

Today, I found myself completely lost in the timeless beauty of Kyoto's Gion district. It's a place where the past feels incredibly present, where every corner holds a story, and where the gentle whispers of history echo through the narrow streets. Jürgen would have loved strolling around here with me, but I know he's busy preparing for his upcoming architecture exhibition in Berlin. I miss him, but I also know he's with me in spirit as I explore.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Teppan Tavern Tenamonya. The savory flavors of their Osaka-style okonomiyaki were the perfect start to a day of exploration. I had never tried Okonomiyaki before, so it was quite the experience!

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I made my way to Yasaka Shrine. The shrine's vibrant vermilion gate stood proudly against the clear sky. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the sense of peace and tranquility that permeated the air. The history of Yasaka Shrine stretches back over 1350 years, and you can feel it in every stone and every carefully crafted detail. The shrine is dedicated to Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a great god of storms and sea, and his family. I took a moment to reflect on the many prayers and hopes that have been offered here over the centuries.

In the heart of Gion, time seems to slow, allowing you to truly connect with the soul of Kyoto.

From Yasaka Shrine, it was a short stroll to Maruyama Park. I had heard so much about this park, especially its famous weeping cherry tree. While the cherry blossoms weren't quite in full bloom yet, there were some early blossoms showing. The park was still beautiful, with lush greenery and serene ponds. I could imagine how spectacular it must be in full bloom, with the weeping cherry tree illuminated at night.

I took a leisurely walk through the park, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the company of fellow travelers. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge before continuing my exploration of Gion. I made a mental note to return in a few days, hoping to catch the peak of the cherry blossom season. I know Sophie would love to see it, maybe next year I can convince her to come with me.

Lunchtime found me at Mezopotamia Kebab House, a surprising but welcome culinary detour. I know, it sounds strange to have Kebab in Japan, but I was actually craving some mediterranean food. The flavors were rich and satisfying, and it was a nice change of pace from the traditional Japanese cuisine I had been enjoying. It's always interesting to find unexpected cultural connections in new places.

After lunch, I ventured into the heart of Gion, to Hanamikoji Street. This is the most famous geisha district in Kyoto, and it's like stepping back in time. The street is lined with traditional wooden machiya houses, many of which now serve as restaurants and teahouses. As I walked along the street, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of a geiko or maiko on their way to an appointment.

While I didn't see any geiko or maiko, I did soak in the atmosphere of the street. The lanterns cast a warm glow, and the air was filled with the sounds of traditional music and the chatter of people enjoying their evening. I peeked into some of the restaurants and teahouses, imagining the elegant and refined world that exists behind those closed doors.

I decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at Kazari Nishiki. This charming shop offers a variety of seasonal Japanese goods and Western clothing with a Kyoto touch. I was particularly drawn to the cute crafts and the stylish clothing coordination ideas. The owner clearly has a passion for the seasons and changes the store's look and product mix each month to reflect the current Kyoto atmosphere. I ended up buying a beautiful silk scarf with a cherry blossom design, a perfect souvenir of my trip.

As evening approached, I made my way to Sakuragawa for dinner. This restaurant is known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine, and I was eager to experience it. The meal was a culinary journey, with each dish carefully prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were subtle and refined, and I savored every bite. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploring the cultural treasures of Gion.

To cap off the evening, I decided to visit Bar Ixey. I had read about this bar and its unique cocktails, and I was intrigued. The bar has a vintage twenties ambiance and specializes in herbal liqueurs paired with herbs from their own garden. The bartender was incredibly knowledgeable and took the time to explain each cocktail and its ingredients. I opted for a cocktail made with local citrus and herbs, and it was a truly exceptional drink. The bar had a cozy and welcoming vibe, and I felt like I was in on a well-kept secret.

As I sipped my cocktail, I reflected on the day's experiences. Gion had truly captured my heart. It's a place where the past and present coexist in perfect harmony, where beauty and tradition are celebrated, and where the gentle whispers of history can be heard in every corner. I felt so grateful to have had the opportunity to experience this enchanting place.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Ryoan-ji, Ninna-ji Temple and Daitoku-ji Temple. I am excited to see some more of Kyoto's cultural heritage. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of today and dream of the cherry blossoms that will soon be in full bloom.

Before heading back to the hotel, I took one last stroll through Hanamikoji Street. The lanterns were glowing, and the street was alive with activity. I paused for a moment, closed my eyes, and took a deep breath. The scent of incense, the sound of music, and the gentle breeze on my face – it was a perfect moment, a memory I will cherish forever.

I am so glad that I decided to come on this trip with my friends. It's been so long since I've had a chance to just relax and enjoy myself. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures!

I think Jürgen and I should come back here together next time. He would absolutely love it.
