A Day Among the Dogon

Today was an incredible day of exploration and cultural immersion as we ventured into Dogon Country. Leaving Mopti behind, Fatoumata, the kids, and I set out to discover the villages of Iréli Niéné and Diabi. The landscape transformed as we drove, the hustle of the city giving way to the serene and rugged beauty of the Malian countryside. I was eager to share the traditions of this region with my family, and today did not disappoint.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Bar Bozo. I wanted to start the day with a traditional Malian meal. The restaurant's location near the port provided a great view of the Niger River as the morning sun cast its golden rays over the water. After breakfast, we began our journey to Iréli Niéné.

The drive to Iréli Niéné was an adventure in itself. The roads were rough, but the scenery was captivating. Aminata and Ibrahim were glued to the windows, pointing out the unique rock formations and the occasional donkey cart. As we approached Iréli Niéné, the landscape became even more dramatic, with the Bandiagara Escarpment looming in the distance.

When we arrived in Iréli Niéné, we were immediately struck by the village's unique architecture and the warmth of its people. The houses, built into the cliffs, seemed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. We were greeted by a local guide who offered to show us around, and we gladly accepted. He shared stories of the Dogon people, their traditions, and their deep connection to the land.

Traveling is not just about seeing new places; it’s about opening your mind to new perspectives and understanding different ways of life.

We explored the village, climbing the stone steps and admiring the intricate carvings on the doors and walls. Aminata was fascinated by the granaries, which our guide explained were used to store millet, the staple food of the Dogon people. Ibrahim, ever the curious one, peppered our guide with questions about the village's history and the significance of various symbols.

After Iréli Niéné, we made our way to Diabi, another charming village in Dogon Country. Though perhaps less known than Iréli Niéné, Diabi offered its own unique charm and a more intimate glimpse into rural Malian life. We took a leisurely walk through the village, interacting with locals and observing their daily routines. The people of Diabi were incredibly welcoming, and we felt a sense of peace and tranquility as we wandered through the narrow streets.

For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Damou in Sévaré. The food was simple but delicious, offering a taste of authentic Malian cuisine. Fatoumata was particularly impressed with the flavorful stews, while the kids enjoyed the grilled meats. It was a satisfying meal that fueled us for the rest of our day's adventures.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to Mopti. But before heading back to our accommodation, we decided to stop by Venise Night Club for a drink. While not typically a place for families, we figured a quick stop wouldn't hurt, and it offered a glimpse into the local nightlife. The atmosphere was lively, with music filling the air and people dancing and laughing. The kids enjoyed the music and the vibrant energy, and it was a fun way to end our day.

Finally, for dinner, we chose Restaurant Baramuso. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and the staff were very friendly. The menu offered a mix of local and international dishes, and we all found something we enjoyed. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration and cultural immersion.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit KONIPOLA VERGER and Boulevard de Oumar H Toure. I am looking forward to seeing what these attractions have to offer and continuing our exploration of Mopti. We will also have breakfast at Zeina café Mopti, lunch at Yeredeme, and dinner at Restaurant Sigui Mopti. I am also hoping to visit Songhoy Shop Art Club to pick up some souvenirs.

Today was a reminder of the beauty and richness of Malian culture. Sharing these experiences with my family is something I will always cherish. As we continue our journey, I am excited to see what other adventures await us in this remarkable country.

Reflections on the Day

As the sun set over Mopti, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible day we had in Dogon Country. It was a day filled with cultural immersion, natural beauty, and heartwarming encounters. I am grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family and to learn more about the traditions and way of life of the Dogon people.

The villages of Iréli Niéné and Diabi were a feast for the senses. The unique architecture, the vibrant colors, and the warmth of the people left a lasting impression on all of us. Aminata and Ibrahim were particularly engaged, asking questions and absorbing the stories shared by our guide. It's moments like these that make traveling as a family so rewarding.

One of the highlights of the day was our visit to Restaurant Damou. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was welcoming. It was a great opportunity to try some authentic Malian cuisine and to connect with the local community. I am always impressed by the hospitality and generosity of the Malian people, and our experience at Restaurant Damou was a perfect example of this.

Of course, no day is complete without a bit of adventure, and our quick stop at Venise Night Club provided just that. It was a fun and unexpected way to end our day, and the kids enjoyed the music and energy of the club. While it's important to respect local customs and traditions, it's also fun to step outside of our comfort zone and experience new things.

As we prepare for our final day in Mopti, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. This trip has been an incredible opportunity to connect with my Malian heritage and to share it with my family. I am looking forward to exploring KONIPOLA VERGER and Boulevard de Oumar H Toure tomorrow and to savoring the flavors of Zeina café Mopti, Yeredeme, and Restaurant Sigui Mopti. And who knows, maybe we'll even find some treasures at Songhoy Shop Art Club.

Mali has captured my heart once again, and I know that this trip will be a cherished memory for all of us.

Final Thoughts

Our day in Dogon Country was more than just a sightseeing tour; it was an immersion into a culture rich with history, tradition, and resilience. It was a reminder of the importance of connecting with different communities and understanding their way of life. As a Malian who has lived abroad for many years, I feel a deep sense of responsibility to share the beauty and complexity of my homeland with my children.

The Dogon people have managed to preserve their unique culture despite the challenges of modernization and globalization. Their commitment to their traditions is inspiring, and I hope that our visit, in some small way, helps to support their efforts. I encourage anyone who has the opportunity to visit Dogon Country to do so with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

As our trip to Mopti comes to an end, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment and gratitude. We have explored bustling markets, navigated the Niger River, and immersed ourselves in the traditions of the Dogon people. We have tasted delicious food, made new friends, and created memories that will last a lifetime. This trip has been a reminder of the power of travel to broaden our horizons, deepen our understanding, and connect us with the world around us. And as we prepare to return to Montreal, I know that a part of my heart will always remain in Mali.
