A Day Amongst Giants of History

Today, on the third day of our family trip to Arezzo, we immersed ourselves in the city's rich history and stunning landscapes. It was a day of exploration, discovery, and quality time spent together, reinforcing why I cherish these family adventures so much. From the imposing Medici Fortress to the elegant Palazzo dei Priori and the tranquil Passeggio del Prato, Arezzo unveiled its captivating blend of culture and natural beauty.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Le Chiavi D'Oro ristorante. The restaurant is near the Basilica of San Francesco. The ambiance was charming, with vintage-inspired decor that created a warm and inviting atmosphere. As we enjoyed our meal, we discussed our plans for the day, eager to explore the historical sites that Arezzo had to offer. Fuelled up and ready to go, our first stop was the Medici Fortress Park.

Medici Fortress Park: A Glimpse into Military History

The Medici Fortress, or Fortezza Medicea, stands proudly on the hill of San Donato, offering panoramic views of Arezzo and the surrounding countryside. Designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and completed between 1538 and 1560, this fortress was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici as part of the state's defensive system. As a librarian specializing in historical archives, I am always fascinated by military architecture, and the Medici Fortress is a prime example of 16th-century design.

Walking through the park, Sophie was particularly intrigued by the fortress's five-pointed star shape and the sheer height of its walls. I explained to her how these features were innovative for their time, providing a strategic advantage in defending the city. Hans, ever the carpenter, admired the stonework and the solid construction, appreciating the craftsmanship that went into building such a formidable structure. The fortress has an ancient history, with the site having been an outpost since Roman times. The fortress was partly dismantled by French troops in 1800, but it was later restored. Today, the park surrounding the fortress is a public space where locals and tourists alike can enjoy the beautiful views and learn about the city's past.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

After exploring the Medici Fortress, we made our way to the Palazzo dei Priori, the town hall of Arezzo.

Palazzo dei Priori: A Seat of Power and Art

The Palazzo dei Priori, located in Piazza della Libertà, has been the seat of Arezzo's government since it was built around 1333. The palace is a stunning example of medieval architecture, with a mighty crenellated tower that dominates the city's skyline. Inside, we discovered numerous works of art, including frescoes, statues, and architectural elements that reflect the city's rich history.

As we wandered through the palace, I pointed out the various architectural modifications that had been made over the centuries. The façade, for instance, has undergone several renovations, with the original appearance still visible on the side facing Via Ricasoli. Sophie was particularly impressed by the Sala dei Matrimoni, with its large stone fireplace and frescoes by Teofilo Torri. Hans, meanwhile, was drawn to the 16th-century courtyard, with its arcade and loggias. The Palazzo dei Priori is not only a symbol of Arezzo's political power but also a treasure trove of art and history.

For lunch, we stopped at Trattoria Il Saraceno, a restaurant that came highly recommended. The restaurant is tucked away in a side street just off Corso Italia. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the menu featured a wide selection of traditional Tuscan dishes. I opted for a classic pasta dish, while Hans enjoyed a hearty meat dish. Sophie, ever the adventurous eater, tried a local specialty that she had never had before. The food was delicious, and the service was friendly and efficient.

Passeggio del Prato: A Tranquil Escape

After lunch, we strolled through the Passeggio del Prato, a public park located between the Cathedral of Arezzo and the Medici Fortress. This park, also known as Il Prato, has been a place for Aretines to gather and relax since the early 19th century. As we walked along the tree-lined paths, we admired the ancient trees and the beautiful views of the city and the surrounding countryside.

In the center of the park, we came across a monument dedicated to the poet Petrarch, who was born in Arezzo in 1304. As a librarian, I have always admired Petrarch's work, and it was a special moment to see this tribute to him in his hometown. Sophie, who is studying literature in school, was also moved by the monument. Hans, ever practical, simply enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the opportunity to stretch his legs. The Passeggio del Prato is a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, a place where one can reflect on the past and appreciate the beauty of the present.

Before dinner, Sophie was interested in doing some vintage shopping. So we stopped by WOW! Vintage Shop. Raffaella, the owner, has a passion for travel and a keen eye for unique vintage pieces. Sophie loved browsing through the racks of clothing and accessories, each with its own story to tell. I was impressed by the shop's commitment to sustainability, promoting the idea of recycling and reusing clothing to extend its life cycle. Hans, while not particularly interested in fashion, appreciated the shop's eclectic atmosphere and the creativity of its displays. It’s wonderful to see how vintage fashion is making a comeback, especially among the younger generation.

For dinner, we had reservations at Essenza Dario e Anna - dal 1964, a restaurant known for its excellent service and attractive decor. Located in Piazza Grande, the restaurant offered a delightful culinary experience. The staff was attentive and welcoming, and the ambiance was both elegant and relaxed. We savored each dish, enjoying the flavors of Tuscan cuisine and the company of each other.

As the day drew to a close, we reflected on our adventures and the memories we had created. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Fondazione Ivan Bruschi, the Gāius Cilnius Mæcēnās National Archæological Museum, and San Domenico. I am particularly excited about the Fondazione Ivan Bruschi, as it aligns with my love for history and antiques. We also plan to enjoy a drink at Bar Centrale 1973.

Today was a perfect blend of history, culture, and family bonding. Arezzo continues to surprise and delight us with its hidden gems and captivating stories. I am grateful for these moments and look forward to sharing more of our journey with you.
