Nathalie's Solo Cultural Exploration in Kyoto
Day 2: A Day of Ancient Echoes: Exploring Kyoto's Soul
Wandering through Kyoto's historic streets, discovering temples, and savoring vegan delights. A perfect day of cultural immersion.
Whispers of the Past
Today was a day of stepping back in time, a journey through the very soul of Kyoto. It was a day filled with the echoes of ancient footsteps, the scent of incense, and the gentle rustling of kimono-clad figures gliding through historic streets. I felt an incredible connection to the past, a sense of continuity that only a city like Kyoto can evoke.
My day began with a delightful vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. It's always a joy to find plant-based options that don't compromise on taste, and this little gem was no exception. I savored every bite of my meal, feeling energized and ready to embrace the day's adventures.

My first stop was the majestic Kiyomizu-dera. The temple, founded in 778, stood proudly on the hillside, its wooden stage offering a breathtaking panoramic view of Kyoto. It was easy to see why this place is so celebrated. The air was crisp, and the sky was a brilliant blue, making the colors of the temple even more vibrant. As I walked through the grounds, I admired the intricate details of the architecture and the serene beauty of the surrounding landscape. The temple's history is palpable, and I felt a deep sense of reverence as I explored its various halls and shrines.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and gardens, but in the way the past seamlessly blends with the present.
I made my way to the Otowa Waterfall, located at the base of Kiyomizu-dera's main hall. The water is divided into three separate streams, each said to offer a different benefit: longevity, success at school, and a fortunate love life. I chose to drink from the stream promising longevity, hoping for many more years of travel and exploration.
Next, I wandered through the charming streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka. These narrow, sloping roads are lined with traditional wooden storefronts, tea houses, and restaurants, offering a glimpse into Kyoto's past. The atmosphere was enchanting, with the gentle sounds of traditional music and the aroma of local delicacies filling the air. I couldn't resist stopping at a few shops to browse the handcrafted souvenirs and local crafts. It was a delightful experience, and I felt like I was walking through a living museum.

Legend has it that if you fall on Sannenzaka, you'll die in three years, and if you fall on Ninenzaka, you'll die in two. I made sure to watch my step very carefully!
For lunch, I indulged in a delightful tonkatsu meal at Katsukura - Kyoto Porta. While not traditionally Kyoto cuisine, it was a satisfying and delicious experience. The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, and the set meal came with free refills of rice, soup, and cabbage salad. It was the perfect fuel for the rest of my day.

In the evening, I had a reservation at Gion Nanba for a traditional Kaiseki dinner. Tucked away in a small alley in Gion, this Michelin-starred restaurant offered an intimate and authentic dining experience. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The chef paid meticulous attention to the seasonal ingredients, allowing their natural flavors to shine through. It was a culinary journey that tantalized my taste buds and left me feeling deeply satisfied.

To cap off the evening, I decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife at L'Escamoteur, a unique bar known for its magical atmosphere and creative cocktails. The bar's interior was dimly lit and filled with eclectic decorations, creating a whimsical and enchanting ambiance. The bartender, a charismatic Frenchman, crafted each cocktail with flair and showmanship, making the experience all the more memorable. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Kyoto's cultural treasures.

As I walked back to the Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Kyoto Premier, I reflected on the day's experiences. Kyoto had truly captivated me with its rich history, stunning beauty, and vibrant culture. Every corner of the city seemed to whisper stories of the past, inviting me to immerse myself in its timeless charm.

The February weather was quite mild, with temperatures ranging from 2-10°C (36-50°F), making it ideal for walking around and exploring the city. The occasional light rain added to the atmosphere, creating a sense of tranquility and serenity.
Tomorrow, I plan to venture to Arashiyama to explore the bamboo forest and Tenryu-ji Temple. I am eager to see the natural beauty of this area and to continue my journey through Kyoto's cultural landscape. I've heard the Nishiki Market is a must-see, so I'll be sure to check that out as well. I am also looking forward to the breakfast at Nakamura and dinner at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO.
It's moments like these, wandering through ancient streets and discovering hidden gems, that remind me why I love to travel. Kyoto has a way of slowing down time, allowing you to truly appreciate the beauty and wonder of the world around you. And as a librarian specializing in historical archives, this trip has been a dream come true, a chance to connect with the past in a profound and meaningful way. I am so grateful for this opportunity and eager to see what tomorrow brings.
I'm also glad I remembered to pack my comfortable walking shoes. They were essential for navigating the sloping streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka! I do wish I had remembered my travel adapter, though. Charging my camera has been a bit of a challenge.
