Inari's Embrace and Kyoto's Soul

Today was a day of vibrant colors, serene spirituality, and delightful discoveries in Kyoto. I ventured into the heart of this ancient city, ready to explore its famed temples and bustling streets. It was a day filled with sensory experiences that I'll cherish forever.

My day began with an early start, fueled by excitement and a strong cup of Japanese green tea. I was eager to immerse myself in Kyoto's cultural tapestry, and today’s itinerary promised a rich blend of history, spirituality, and local flavor. The air was crisp, a typical late-winter morning, with a hint of plum blossoms in the breeze, a gentle reminder of the approaching spring.

First on my list was the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha. The train ride there was smooth, and as I stepped out of the station, I was immediately greeted by the sight of the vermillion torii gates snaking up the mountainside. The sheer scale of the shrine was breathtaking. It felt like stepping into another world, a realm of vibrant color and ancient mystery.

The climb was invigorating. Thousands upon thousands of torii gates, each donated by individuals and businesses, created a mesmerizing tunnel. Sunlight filtered through the gaps, casting dancing shadows on the path. Along the way, I encountered numerous fox statues, the messengers of Inari, each with its unique expression and adornment. I took my time, stopping to admire the intricate carvings and the stunning views of Kyoto sprawling below. It was a truly spiritual experience, a meditative journey through a sacred landscape.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that lead us inward, allowing us to connect with something greater than ourselves.

After descending from Fushimi Inari, my next stop was Tōfuku-ji Temple. Founded in 1236, the temple is renowned for its autumn colors, but even in late February, it held a serene beauty. The main hall, a reconstruction from 1934, was impressive in its scale, and the surrounding buildings exuded a sense of history and tranquility. I paid the small fee to enter the Hojo garden, a unique Zen garden that surrounds the former living quarters of the head priest. Each side of the garden had a distinct character, employing pebbles, rocks, moss, and checkered patterns to create a harmonious and contemplative space.

It's interesting to note that Tofuku-ji is undergoing renovations on some of its buildings, which are designated as National Important Cultural Properties, from mid-May 2023 to October 2025. The Kaisando Hall remains open to visitors during this time, so I was still able to experience a significant part of the temple's beauty.

My final temple visit for the day was to Sanjūsangendō Temple, famous for its 1001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. The temple hall itself is Japan's longest wooden structure, stretching an impressive 120 meters. Inside, the sight of the statues was awe-inspiring. A large, wooden statue of a 1000-armed Kannon sat in the center, flanked by 500 statues on each side, arranged in ten rows. Each statue was crafted from Japanese cypress and adorned with gold leaf. It was a truly remarkable sight, a testament to the skill and artistry of the sculptors.

After a morning filled with spiritual exploration, it was time to indulge in Kyoto's culinary delights. For breakfast, I visited Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura, a restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine made with seasonal ingredients. I opted for a set meal featuring fresh fish and local vegetables, and I particularly enjoyed the Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option, with a variety of small, flavorful dishes that perfectly complemented the rice. The pumpkin, taro root, and hijiki seaweed were standouts.

Lunch was at Katsukura - Kyoto Porta, a tonkatsu restaurant located in Kyoto Station. I decided to try their famous pork cutlet, and it did not disappoint. The pork was tender and juicy, the breading was crispy and light, and the tonkatsu sauce was rich and flavorful. It was the perfect comfort food after a long morning of sightseeing.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street, a bustling covered arcade filled with shops selling everything from souvenirs to fashion to local crafts. The atmosphere was lively and energetic, with a mix of locals and tourists browsing the wares. I picked up a few small gifts for Amara and Maximilian, and I couldn't resist trying some of the local street food. I found a charming tea shop and purchased some exquisite Uji tea, thinking of how much Maximilian would enjoy it.

As evening approached, I made my way to THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO for dinner. This restaurant is housed in a beautifully restored traditional Japanese building, once the residence of a renowned Japanese painter. The ambiance was elegant and refined, and the Italian cuisine was exceptional. I savored each course, appreciating the artistry and attention to detail that went into every dish. The restaurant's garden was particularly beautiful, and I enjoyed a leisurely stroll through it after my meal.

I reflected on the day as I walked back to the Ace Hotel Kyoto. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Kyoto. The city had captivated me with its ancient temples, vibrant streets, and exquisite cuisine. It was a day that nourished my soul and left me with memories that I will cherish forever.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Kiyomizu-dera, Sannenzaka, and Ninenzaka. I'm also looking forward to trying the Khaos Spice Diner for breakfast, Premium Pound Gion for lunch, and Jiki Miyazawa for dinner. And perhaps, if time allows, I'll stop by The Common One Bar Kyoto for a nightcap. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I'm reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences and connecting with different cultures. Travel is not just about seeing new places; it's about opening our minds and hearts to the world around us.

The day’s adventures reminded me of a quote I once read: "Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer." Indeed, every temple visited, every meal savored, and every street explored added to the richness of my experience, creating memories that I will treasure long after I return home to Heidelberg.
