Discover the surreal landscapes of Dades Valley with its unique rock formations, savor local flavors, and immerse in Berber culture.
Dades Valley's Natural Sculptures
Today was an exploration into the heart of the Dades Valley, a day filled with geological wonders and cultural immersion. The landscapes here are truly something out of a dream, with rock formations sculpted by time and weather into the most peculiar shapes. I couldn't wait to share my experiences as we ventured deeper into this Moroccan gem.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurant zinyou sud. The traditional Moroccan pancakes, served with honey and argan oil, were the perfect fuel for the day ahead. It reminded me of the simple breakfasts I used to have in Gampola, Sri Lanka, though with a distinct Berber twist. Maximilian would have loved the strong, sweet mint tea they served here; he always appreciates a good cuppa.

First on our itinerary were the famed Monkey Paw Mountains. As we approached, the landscape transformed into a dramatic display of eroded rock formations that indeed resembled a set of giant monkey paws reaching towards the sky. The vibrant colors of the rocks, ranging from deep reds to ochre, were particularly striking under the clear morning sun. Amara would have been fascinated by these natural sculptures; she has always loved stories about mythical creatures and these mountains certainly sparked the imagination.

We decided to take one of the hiking trails that wind around the base of the mountains. The path was rocky, requiring sturdy shoes – I was glad I remembered to pack my hiking boots, unlike my sunglasses which I seemed to have forgotten back in Heidelberg! As we ascended, the views of the Dades Valley became increasingly breathtaking, with lush oases contrasting against the arid mountain backdrop. I made sure to take plenty of photos, hoping to capture the surreal beauty of this place. Photography has always been a way for me to preserve these memories, to share the world as I see it with all of you.
The earth has music for those who listen.
After spending a few hours exploring the Monkey Paw Mountains, we drove towards our next destination: Kefroun, also known as the Turtle's Back. This unique geological formation is located near the small town of Taadadate. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the valley.
Kefroun, living up to its name, strikingly resembled a giant turtle shell rising from the earth. The surrounding area was perfect for a leisurely stroll, and we took our time exploring the diverse flora and fauna. The landscape here felt ancient, shaped by millennia of geological processes. It was a humbling experience, reminding me of the immense power of nature and the importance of preserving these natural wonders.

For lunch, we stopped at Café Achaf, a local eatery known for its traditional Berber cuisine. I opted for a tagine with lamb and vegetables, cooked in a clay pot over an open fire. The flavors were rich and aromatic, a testament to the simple yet skillful cooking techniques of the region. Trying new cuisines is one of my favorite parts of traveling; it’s a way to connect with the local culture and learn about the history of a place. It also gives me ideas for new dishes to try back home, perhaps with a German or Sri Lankan twist!

In the afternoon, we decided to indulge in a bit of shopping at ORINO SHOP. Though it was described as an electronics shop, it was more like a treasure trove of local goods and souvenirs. I picked up a few small trinkets to bring back home, little reminders of our time in the Dades Valley. I found a beautiful, hand-woven scarf. The colors reminded me of the vibrant textiles back home in Sri Lanka. I am excited to bring it home and perhaps try to incorporate it into a Kandyan dance routine.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Le Basilic Restaurant Des Rêves for dinner. The restaurant had a charming ambiance, with a cozy interior and a menu featuring a mix of Moroccan and French dishes. I decided to try the local specialty, a tagine with dates and almonds, while my friends opted for the grilled fish. The food was delicious, and the service was attentive and kind. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure and exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the incredible diversity of the Dades Valley. From the surreal rock formations to the rich Berber culture, every corner of this place has something unique to offer. It's a reminder of why I love to travel, to experience new things and to share those experiences with all of you. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures, which include visiting Azrou n Itbirn and the Gorges Dadés , I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this enchanting corner of Morocco. I'm particularly excited to see the Gorges Dadés, as I've heard they offer some of the most stunning views in the country. Perhaps we'll even find a cozy café like Ayour cafe restaurant to relax in after a day of exploring. I am especially keen to see if there is a good place to buy some spices to bring home.
The Dades Valley has already captured my heart, and I know that the days ahead will only bring more unforgettable moments. I am already looking forward to sharing those moments with you all. Good night from Morocco!
