A Fond Farewell to Kyoto

As our family adventure in Kyoto draws to a close, I wanted to soak up every last bit of this magical city. Today was all about indulging in some of Kyoto's unique offerings: a journey through the history of Japanese trains, a dive into the world of manga, and a culinary exploration of the city's vibrant market. It was a day of discovery and delight, a perfect way to bid adieu to this cultural heart of Japan.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kizahashi. We enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. Aisha, surprisingly, loved the miso soup, declaring it her favorite part of the meal. Hans and I enjoyed the variety, fueling up for a day of exploration.

First on our list was the Kyoto Railway Museum. As a family, we've always been fascinated by trains. I remember growing up in Koumpentoum, I would be so excited when I saw trains passing by. The sheer size and power of these machines always captivated me. This museum promised to be a treat, and it certainly didn't disappoint. From the moment we stepped inside, we were transported into a world of railway history. The museum boasts an impressive collection of 53 types of railway vehicles, from pre-war steam locomotives to the latest Shinkansen bullet trains. Aisha was particularly excited about the Thomas the Tank Engine exhibition. The museum is celebrating the 80th anniversary of the original publication of The Railway Series, and it's a fascinating look at the history of these iconic stories.

We spent hours wandering through the exhibits, marveling at the engineering and design of the trains. Aisha loved the interactive displays, especially the train simulator, where she got to experience what it's like to be a train conductor. Hans, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the intricate mechanics of the steam locomotives. I enjoyed learning about the history of Japan's railway system, how it evolved over time, and its impact on the country's development. It was interesting to see the evolution of train travel in Japan and how it mirrored the country's modernization.

Travel is more than seeing the sights; it's about experiencing the heart and soul of a place.

Next, we headed to the Kyoto International Manga Museum. This was an experience I was particularly looking forward to, as I've always been intrigued by the art of manga. Aisha, of course, was thrilled at the prospect of seeing her favorite characters come to life. The museum is housed in a former elementary school, which adds to its unique charm. Inside, we discovered a vast collection of manga, from classic titles to contemporary works. Aisha was in heaven, flipping through the pages of her favorite series. I was impressed by the diversity of the collection, showcasing the evolution of manga art and storytelling over the years. It was really interesting to see how Japanese culture is reflected in manga.

While we were there, we learned that the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair (KYOMAF) will be held in September. It sounds like an amazing event, supporting new businesses utilizing manga and anime, and promoting Kyoto as a content city. Maybe we'll have to plan another trip! The museum itself was a treasure trove, with walls lined with manga from floor to ceiling. We spent a delightful afternoon immersed in the colorful world of Japanese comics. Aisha even tried her hand at drawing her own manga character, with Hans offering some helpful tips. I enjoyed learning about the history of manga and its cultural significance in Japan.

Our final stop for the day was Nishiki Market, known as Kyoto's Kitchen. This bustling market street is a food lover's paradise, with over 130 shops and stalls selling everything from fresh seafood to traditional sweets. The market has a vibrant atmosphere, with vendors calling out to customers and the aroma of delicious food filling the air. We strolled through the narrow lanes, sampling various delicacies along the way. Aisha was adventurous, trying everything from grilled octopus to pickled vegetables. Hans and I savored the fresh sushi and sashimi, marveling at the quality of the ingredients. I was fascinated by the variety of local produce on display, reflecting the seasonal bounty of the region.

We stopped at Yamasho, a family-owned shop, and tried the Tako Tamago (octopus and egg), a local specialty. It was a bit strange, but surprisingly delicious. We also sampled dashimaki from Miki Keiran, a savory and fluffy omelet that has been made since 1928. It was the perfect snack to end our culinary adventure. Nishiki Market was more than just a place to eat; it was a cultural experience, a glimpse into the heart of Kyoto's culinary traditions.

For lunch, we indulged in a delightful meal at Jiki Miyazawa. The restaurant is known for its exquisite Kyoto cuisine, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. We enjoyed a multi-course meal, each dish beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. Aisha even tried some new dishes, encouraged by the friendly staff. Hans and I savored the delicate flavors and textures, appreciating the artistry of Japanese cuisine.

As the sun began to set, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at Kyoto Star Bar. This stylish bar is known for its expertly crafted cocktails and sophisticated atmosphere. I opted for a classic gin and tonic, while Hans tried a local sake. Aisha enjoyed a refreshing juice, feeling very grown-up in the elegant setting. The bar had a cozy and welcoming vibe, making us feel like we were in on a well-kept secret. The bartender was a true artist, creating cocktails that were both beautiful and delicious. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Tomorrow, we leave Kyoto, heading back to Germany with hearts full of memories and a newfound appreciation for Japanese culture. I'm already looking forward to our next adventure, wherever it may take us. As I reflect on our journey, I am reminded of the importance of embracing new experiences, of stepping outside our comfort zones, and of connecting with different cultures. These are the moments that shape us, that broaden our perspectives, and that make us who we are.

Before heading back to the hotel, we made one last stop at Kyoto Star Bar. The atmosphere was lively, and the cocktails were expertly crafted. I tried a Ki No Bi Negroni, which was highly recommended, while Hans enjoyed a Japanese whiskey. Aisha sipped on a sparkling cider, feeling like a little adult. It was the perfect way to end our final night in Kyoto.

As I pack our bags tonight, I can't help but feel a pang of sadness. Our time in Kyoto has been so special, so enriching. But I also feel a sense of excitement, knowing that we will carry these memories with us, inspiring us to continue exploring the world and embracing new cultures. Kyoto, you have stolen a piece of my heart. I hope to return someday soon. Farewell for now, but not forever.

Until Next Time, Kyoto

As our journey concludes, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences and memories we've created. Kyoto has a special way of touching your soul, and I know we'll carry a piece of it with us wherever we go.
