Day 9: A Fond Farewell to San Gimignano: Cherishing Tuscan Memories
Reflecting on our final day in San Gimignano, from Piazza della Cisterna's charm to sunset views and delightful Tuscan flavors.
A Tuscan Sunset Serenade
As our Tuscan adventure draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. San Gimignano has truly captured my heart with its timeless beauty and warm, inviting atmosphere. Today, Hans and I embraced our last day here, determined to soak in every last bit of its charm before we bid farewell. It's amazing how a place can feel so familiar in such a short amount of time. I already know that I will miss wandering through the cobblestone streets and discovering hidden gems around every corner.
Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at Le Vecchie Mura. Sipping on strong Italian coffee while overlooking the rolling Tuscan hills was the perfect way to start the day. The pastries were heavenly, and the atmosphere was so peaceful. Le Vecchie Mura opened in 1982 and was once a stable. It's amazing how it has been transformed into such a beautiful restaurant.

After breakfast, we strolled to the heart of San Gimignano, Piazza della Cisterna. The triangular shape of the square is so unique, and the medieval well in the center is a testament to the town's rich history. The square was bustling with activity, and I couldn't resist taking a few photos to capture the vibrant atmosphere. I imagined what it must have been like centuries ago, with knights and merchants trading goods in the very same spot. I read that the Piazza della Cisterna sometimes hosts events. Unfortunately, nothing was going on today but it was still fun to imagine.

Sometimes, the most beautiful moments are the quiet ones, where you simply observe and appreciate the world around you.
Next on our list was finding the perfect viewpoint to take in the breathtaking Tuscan landscape. We climbed to a spot that offered panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The rolling hills, dotted with vineyards and olive groves, stretched out as far as the eye could see. The view reminded me of the beauty of the Vietnamese countryside back home in Buon Ma Thuot. It's amazing how different landscapes can evoke similar feelings of peace and tranquility.

For lunch, we decided to try Il Trovatore, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Tuscan cuisine. Hans ordered the Florentine steak, while I opted for the homemade pasta with truffle sauce. The flavors were incredible, and the ingredients were so fresh. Il Trovatore is known for its Fiorentina steak and wood-fired pizza. Everything tasted so authentic and delicious. We savored every bite, knowing that it would be one of our last Tuscan meals for a while.

After lunch, we indulged in a bit of retail therapy at Le Sorelle, a delightful shop that sells beautiful textiles and homeware. I was particularly drawn to the colorful printed tablecloths and napkins. I purchased a few small souvenirs to bring back home to Berlin, little reminders of our time in San Gimignano. I also found a lovely silk scarf with a delicate floral pattern, perfect for adding a touch of Tuscan elegance to my wardrobe. The shop has locations in Lucca, Florence, and Montecatini. I'm so glad we stopped in the San Gimignano location!

As the afternoon wore on, we found ourselves drawn back to Piazza della Cisterna. The square had transformed into a lively hub of activity, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the warm sunshine. We sat at a café, sipping on Aperol spritzes and people-watching. It was fascinating to observe the interactions between people from different cultures, all sharing the same space and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. We watched as a group of children chased pigeons across the square, their laughter echoing through the air. I also saw a couple taking wedding photos in the piazza. It was so lovely!
For our final dinner in San Gimignano, we chose Osteria San Giovanni, a cozy restaurant known for its authentic Tuscan dishes. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff made us feel like family. We started with the Tuscan crostini, followed by the ribollita soup. For our main courses, Hans ordered the wild boar ragu, while I opted for the pici pasta with cacio e pepe. Each dish was bursting with flavor, and the ingredients were clearly of the highest quality. I read that Osteria San Giovanni pairs with Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG for wine events. I wish we could have attended one! The restaurant's decor was terrific and the ambience was very nice.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to our favorite viewpoint, wanting to see the sun set over the Tuscan hills one last time. The sky was ablaze with color, painting the landscape in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a truly magical moment, one that I will cherish forever. We sat in silence, holding hands and soaking in the beauty of the moment. It was the perfect way to end our Tuscan adventure.
Reflecting on our time in San Gimignano, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we've shared and the memories we've created. This charming town has captured my heart, and I know that I will carry a piece of it with me wherever I go. As we prepare to leave tomorrow, I am already dreaming of the day when we can return to this enchanting corner of Tuscany. I am so happy to have shared this experience with my husband, Hans. His presence made it that much more special.
Tomorrow, we will begin our journey back to Berlin. Though our time in San Gimignano has come to an end, the memories we've made here will last a lifetime. I am excited to return home and share our experiences with our friends and family. Until next time, San Gimignano!
