A Final Day of Discovery

As my solo journey on Naoshima Island neared its end, I felt a mix of contentment and a tinge of melancholy. This island, a haven of art and tranquility, had seeped into my soul, leaving an indelible mark. I decided to dedicate my final day to exploring the lesser-known corners of Naoshima, seeking out experiences that would offer a more intimate glimpse into the island's culture and community. Today was about savoring the simple joys and hidden gems that make Naoshima so unique.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Little Plum. This cozy café, a short walk from Miyanoura Port, was the perfect spot to fuel up for the day.

I opted for their breakfast set, a delightful combination of freshly baked bread, local jam, and a strong cup of coffee. The friendly staff and the laid-back atmosphere made it a great start to my final day. It felt like a proper send-off, a warm embrace from this artistic haven. I savored every bite, knowing I'd miss these simple pleasures.

With a full stomach and a sense of purpose, I set off to explore Naoshima Hall. This community center, designed by architect Hiroshi Sambuichi, is a testament to the island's commitment to blending art with everyday life.

The building itself is a work of art, with its carefully crafted wooden structure and thoughtfully designed spaces. As I wandered through the hall, I imagined the countless gatherings, celebrations, and performances that had taken place within its walls. It was a space that fostered connection and creativity, a true heart of the community. The way the natural light filtered through the openings in the roof was simply magical, creating an atmosphere of serenity and inspiration.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Next on my list was Perma_Naoshima, a ramen restaurant that had been recommended to me by a local artist. Tucked away in a quiet neighborhood, this unassuming eatery was a culinary gem.

As I slurped down the savory broth and tender noodles, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this unexpected discovery. It was a reminder that the best experiences often come when you least expect them. The ramen was rich and flavorful, a comforting bowl of warmth that nourished both body and soul. The owner, a kind and gentle man, shared stories of his family's history on the island, adding another layer of depth to the experience. It was more than just a meal; it was a connection to the heart of Naoshima.

For lunch, I ventured to Ishii Shouten, an udon restaurant housed in a renovated old shop. The atmosphere was homely and inviting, making me feel like I was dining in my grandmother's kitchen.

I ordered their famous Beef Udon, a mouth-watering highlight that truly lived up to its reputation. The handmade noodles were perfectly chewy, and the savory broth was infused with the rich flavor of the beef. It was a simple yet satisfying meal, a taste of authentic Japanese comfort food that warmed me from the inside out.

In the late afternoon, I made my way to Naoshima Yokocho, a charming izakaya tavern that promised a taste of local nightlife. The tavern exuded a cozy and inviting ambiance, blending contemporary art with traditional Japanese aesthetics.

I sampled a variety of local delicacies, from fresh seafood to savory grilled skewers, each dish bursting with flavor and authenticity. The friendly staff and the lively atmosphere made it easy to strike up conversations with fellow travelers and locals alike. As the evening wore on, I found myself immersed in the vibrant energy of Naoshima Yokocho, feeling a sense of belonging and camaraderie that I would cherish long after I left the island.

As the day drew to a close, I decided to have my farewell dinner at Yuunagi. This restaurant, conveniently located near the port, specializes in dishes made with flounder from Naoshima's Noumi Coast.

I savored each bite of the expertly prepared fish, appreciating the freshness and the delicate flavors. The restaurant had a calming atmosphere, which allowed me to reflect on my journey. It was the perfect ending to my culinary explorations on Naoshima. I enjoyed a Naoshima salt-vanilla soft ice cream for dessert.

My visit to Naoshima Hall was more than just a stop on my itinerary; it was an immersion into the island's soul. Designed by Hiroshi Sambuichi, the hall isn't just a building; it's a living, breathing part of the community.

The architect spent years studying the island's natural elements, and it shows. The hall is designed to harness the wind and light, creating a space that feels both modern and deeply connected to the island's traditions. It struck me as a place where the past and future intertwine, a space that honors the island's heritage while embracing innovation.

The interior is an open space, perfect for the bunraku puppetry performances that sometimes take place there. I could almost hear the echoes of music and laughter, imagining the community coming together to celebrate their shared culture. The moss garden, a tranquil oasis, offered a moment of quiet reflection, a chance to appreciate the simple beauty of nature. It was a reminder that art isn't just confined to museums; it's woven into the very fabric of daily life on Naoshima.

Visiting Perma_Naoshima was an unexpected highlight. This ramen restaurant, renovated from an old barber shop, is a testament to the island's ability to blend art with the everyday.

The owner, Kumataichi, has created a space that feels both rustic and modern, with wooden structures and corrugated iron sheets that pay homage to the island's past. The ramen itself was a work of art, a steaming bowl of flavorful broth, tender noodles, and perfectly cooked toppings. It was the kind of meal that warms you from the inside out, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life.

What struck me most about Perma_Naoshima was the sense of community. It's a place where locals and tourists come together, sharing stories and laughter over steaming bowls of ramen. It's a reminder that art isn't just something to be admired from afar; it's something to be shared and experienced together.

Reflecting on my day, I realized that Naoshima's charm lies not only in its world-renowned museums and art installations but also in its vibrant community spaces and authentic culinary experiences. Naoshima Hall, Perma_Naoshima, and Naoshima Yokocho offered a glimpse into the heart and soul of this unique island, reminding me that art is not just something to be observed but something to be lived and experienced. As I prepared to leave Naoshima, I felt a sense of gratitude for the memories I had created and a longing to return to this enchanting island someday.
