Immerse yourself in Florence's art and history, from the Duomo's heights to charming boutiques, savoring Tuscan flavors along the way.
Florentine Heights and Hidden Delights
Today was a day of soaring heights and delightful discoveries here in Florence. I felt a sense of anticipation as I woke up, knowing we were going to tackle some of the city's most iconic landmarks. It’s incredible to think that just a few days ago, Lena, Sofia and I were back in Heidelberg, planning this very adventure. Now, here we are, living it!
Our day began, as any good day should, with breakfast. We headed to Pasticceria Nencioni, a charming spot I’d read about. The aroma of freshly baked pastries and strong Italian coffee was intoxicating. It's conveniently located, and we easily found it. I opted for a classic cappuccino and a *sfogliatella*, while Lena enjoyed a *brioche* and Sofia devoured a *crostata* with glee. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day ahead. The reviews didn't lie; the pastries were delicious, the staff hospitable, and the atmosphere cozy. It was a delightful start to our Florentine Saturday.
Our first major stop was the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, or as it's more commonly known, the Duomo. Even from a distance, its sheer size and intricate details are awe-inspiring. I have to admit, I felt a little twinge of guilt about not remembering to pack Sofia’s favorite stuffed animal. Hopefully, the Duomo would be distraction enough! Walking into the Piazza del Duomo is like stepping into a postcard. The Duomo, Giotto's Bell Tower, and the Baptistery create a breathtaking ensemble of architectural genius. It's easy to see why this is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
We decided to climb Giotto's Bell Tower first. The thought of 414 steps was daunting, but the promise of panoramic views kept us motivated. Sofia, surprisingly, was a real trooper, only asking to be carried for short stretches. As we ascended, the windows offered tantalizing glimpses of the city, each one more captivating than the last. The exterior of the bell tower is clad in white, red, and green marble, and the sculptural decoration is extremely rich, with 56 relief carvings and 16 life-size statues. Reaching the top was an absolute triumph. The view was simply spectacular. Brunelleschi's Dome seemed close enough to touch, and the entire city of Florence spread out before us in a tapestry of terracotta rooftops, winding streets, and lush green hills. It was worth every single step.
The beauty of Florence isn't just in its monuments, but in the way history and art intertwine with everyday life.
After descending from the bell tower, we ventured into the Cathedral itself. The interior, while grand, felt surprisingly simple compared to the ornate facade. The vastness of the space was humbling, and I found myself craning my neck to take in the intricate details of the stained-glass windows and the artwork adorning the walls. I was particularly struck by the frescoes inside Brunelleschi's dome. The sheer scale of the artwork and the incredible skill of the artists were truly impressive. It's amazing to think that this magnificent structure was completed in the 15th century. Lena, with her architect's eye, was particularly fascinated by the engineering marvel of the dome.
Next on our list was the Opera del Duomo Museum. This museum houses an incredible collection of original sculptures and artwork from the Duomo complex, including the original panels from Giotto's Bell Tower and Ghiberti's Gates of Paradise. It’s located on the eastern side of Piazza del Duomo. Seeing these masterpieces up close was a privilege. Donatello's *Penitent Magdalene* was particularly moving, and the intricate details of Ghiberti's doors were astounding. I was also fascinated by the displays showcasing the history and construction of the Duomo, including original architectural plans, models, and tools used by the craftsmen. The museum truly brought the Duomo's story to life.
By this point, we were all feeling quite peckish, so we sought out La Buchetta Food & Wine Restaurant for lunch. This charming restaurant, recommended by several locals, promised an authentic Tuscan dining experience. Luckily, I had booked a reservation in advance. The restaurant was cozy and romantic. We started with a cheese tasting, sampling different types of mozzarella with cherry tomatoes – a delightful introduction to the region's flavors. For our main courses, Lena and I both opted for the *gnocchi* with pork cheek, a recommendation from our waiter. Sofia, of course, chose pasta with a simple tomato sauce. The *gnocchi* were incredible – rich, flavorful, and unlike anything I'd ever tasted. La Buchetta definitely lived up to its reputation. The food was unforgettable, the wine pairings were perfect, and the staff was incredibly friendly. It was easily one of the best meals we've had in Florence.
After lunch, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy. Boutique Nadine, a shop I had read about, beckoned with its promise of unique vintage finds and creations by local designers. The shop has a Parisian soul and a warm atmosphere. Stepping inside was like entering another world. The shop was filled with carefully selected vintage pieces, as well as clothing and jewelry from emerging designers. Lena, with her keen eye for style, was in heaven, browsing through the racks of vintage dresses and accessories. Sofia, surprisingly, was also captivated by the displays of colorful scarves and quirky jewelry. It was a delightful shopping experience, and we all left with something special.
As evening approached, we decided to unwind with a pre-dinner drink at Mad - Souls & Spirits, a trendy bar known for its creative cocktails. The bar was small and intimate, with a lively atmosphere. I opted for one of their signature cocktails, while Lena enjoyed a glass of local wine, and Sofia had a juice. It was the perfect way to relax and soak in the Florentine atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed the vibe of the bar; it felt like a place where locals and tourists alike could come together and enjoy good drinks and good company. The bartenders were skilled mixologists, and the drinks were both inventive and delicious. It's a fun stop, patronized by old friends, off-duty bartenders, and people wanting good, creative drinks made by a staff that knows booze.
For dinner, we chose Vini e Vecchi Sapori, another local favorite. This *osteria* promised authentic Tuscan cuisine in a cozy, family-run setting. We started with *crostini* with chicken liver *pâté*, a Florentine classic. For our main courses, Lena chose the *pappardelle* with duck *ragu*, while I opted for the rolled stuffed rabbit. Sofia, predictably, chose pasta with tomato sauce again. The food was simple, honest, and incredibly flavorful. It felt like we were dining in someone's home. The owners, Mario and Rosanna, were incredibly welcoming, and their son, Tomasso, made sure we had everything we needed. Vini e Vecchi Sapori was a truly memorable dining experience. There's no pizza, ice, cappuccino, spritz, or ketchup.
As we strolled back to Ponte Vecchio Suites & Spa, the city was bathed in the warm glow of streetlights. The Arno River shimmered in the darkness, and the Ponte Vecchio seemed to glow with its own inner light. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. Florence had truly captured our hearts.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Piazzale Michelangelo for more panoramic views, visit the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, and wander through the Boboli Gardens. I'm already looking forward to another day of adventure in this beautiful city.
And, of course, I'll make sure Sofia has her stuffed animal. It's the little things that make a big difference, especially when traveling with family.
I’m also excited to try Caffè Gilli for breakfast, Buca dell'Orafo for lunch, and Ristorante Borgo San Jacopo for dinner. Plus, we’ll be checking out Florence Leather for some unique souvenirs and enjoying a drink at Antico Caffè del Moro - Art Bar Firenze.
It feels wonderful to be sharing these experiences with Lena and Sofia, creating memories that we’ll cherish for years to come. I’m also happy to be sharing them with you, my readers, hoping to inspire you to embark on your own adventures and discover the beauty that this world has to offer.
Until tomorrow,
Nuno
