Day 8: A Day of Discovery in Riomaggiore: History, Views, and Local Flavors
Exploring Riomaggiore's rich history, stunning views from Castello di Riomaggiore, and savoring authentic Italian cuisine and local bars.
Riomaggiore's Charm: A Day of Exploration
Today was all about diving deep into the heart of Riomaggiore, the southernmost of the Cinque Terre villages. I wanted to soak in the history, enjoy the views, and, of course, indulge in some authentic Italian flavors. It was a day of wandering, discovering, and simply enjoying the simple pleasures of this coastal paradise.
My day started with a hearty breakfast at San Martino Gastronomia. It's a small, unassuming place, but it came highly recommended. I decided to try their focaccia, and it was the perfect way to start the day. The bread was soft and chewy, with just the right amount of salt and olive oil. Paired with a strong Italian coffee, it was the fuel I needed for a day of exploring.

With a full stomach, I made my way towards the Castello di Riomaggiore. The castle sits high above the village, offering panoramic views of the coastline. As I climbed the winding streets, I couldn't help but marvel at the colorful houses clinging to the cliffs. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining what life must have been like centuries ago when this castle was the first line of defense against invaders.
Explore the historic Castello di Riomaggiore, a stunning fortress offering breathtaking views and a glimpse into the rich history of the Italian Riviera.
The Castello di Riomaggiore has a rich history, dating back to the 13th century when the Turcotti Marquises began its construction. The Republic of Genoa later completed it between the 15th and 16th centuries, strengthening Riomaggiore's defenses. Over the centuries, the castle has undergone several transformations, even serving as a cemetery in the early 19th century. Today, it functions as a cultural center and conference hall, hosting events and exhibitions. As I walked through the castle grounds, I could feel the weight of history surrounding me. The views from the terrace were simply breathtaking, offering a sweeping vista of the rugged coastline and the shimmering sea.
Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that require a little bit of effort, a little bit of climbing, a little bit of getting lost.
After exploring the castle, I decided to hike up to the Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montenero. The trail was steep and winding, but the views along the way were more than worth it. The air was crisp and clean, and the only sounds were the chirping of birds and the distant crashing of waves. It was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the village below.

The Santuario di Nostra Signora di Montenero is a place of peace and serenity. According to local tradition, a place of worship has existed on this site since the 8th century. The current structure dates back to the 14th century, though it has been significantly renovated over the years. The sanctuary is divided into three naves and features an 18th-century fresco. The sanctuary offers stunning views of the coastline and the surrounding hills. I lit a candle, took a moment to reflect, and simply enjoyed the tranquility of the place.
By the time I made it back down to Riomaggiore, I was starving. Lunch was at Il Buongustaio Cucina Casalinga, a cozy little restaurant known for its seafood pasta. I ordered the spaghetti with mussels, clams, shrimp, and squid, and it was absolutely delicious. The seafood was fresh and flavorful, and the pasta was perfectly cooked. It was the perfect meal to refuel after a long day of hiking.

As the sun began to set, I found myself at the Vertical Lounge Bar, a popular spot with both locals and tourists. I ordered a spritz and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. The bar is known for its cocktails and bruschetta. I enjoyed the lively atmosphere and chatted with some fellow travelers. The Vertical Lounge Bar definitely has an exotic atmosphere and sympathetic decor, which made it a great spot to relax and soak in the Riomaggiore vibe. The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the village. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Dau Cila, a restaurant that had been recommended for its regional specialties. I started with the mixed antipasto, a selection of local cheeses, cured meats, and marinated vegetables. For my main course, I opted for one of the seafood pastas, and I wasn't disappointed. The flavors were complex and nuanced, and the presentation was impeccable. It was clear that the chefs here were passionate about their craft.

As I walked back to my hotel, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences I had today. Riomaggiore had captured my heart with its beauty, its history, and its delicious food. It was a day that I would remember for a long time to come.
Tomorrow, on my final day here in Cinque Terre, I plan to visit the Cinque Terre National Park and hike a portion of the Sentiero Azzurro. I'm looking forward to one last dose of coastal scenery before heading back to Germany. I also plan to stop by Retrovita 5 Terre to pick up some souvenirs for Greta and myself.
Before heading back to the hotel, I took one last stroll along the harbor. The boats bobbed gently in the water, and the lights of the village twinkled like stars. In the quiet of the night, I could hear the faint sound of music drifting from a nearby bar. It was a reminder that even in the off-season, Cinque Terre is a place of life and energy. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
