Family Adventure at Vatnajokull National Park
Day 7: Glaciers, Craters, and Culinary Delights: A Farewell to Vatnajökull
Embark on a captivating journey through Iceland's Sólheimajökull glacier and Kerid Crater, savoring local flavors along the way.
Farewell, Iceland!
As our Icelandic family adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. Today was a day of contrasts, from the icy grip of a glacier to the fiery depths of a volcanic crater, all interwoven with the comforting thread of Icelandic hospitality and cuisine. It's amazing how a place can capture your heart in just seven days.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Veitingasala Restaurant, Shop, And Gas. Now, I know what you might be thinking – a gas station? But trust me, this place is a gem! It's the kind of spot where locals and tourists alike gather for a quick bite and a friendly chat. We fueled up with some strong Icelandic coffee and traditional pastries, the perfect way to prepare for our glacier adventure. David, ever the pragmatist, also topped up the car's gas tank, ensuring we were ready for the day's travels.

With our appetites sated, we set off for Sólheimajökull glacier. The drive itself was stunning, with vast lava fields stretching out towards the horizon. As we approached the glacier, the landscape transformed into a rugged, otherworldly realm of ice and volcanic ash. Jasmine, always eager to capture the moment, snapped photos of the surreal scenery. I must admit, I was a little nervous about the glacier hike. I'm not exactly the most coordinated person, and the thought of slipping on ice wasn't exactly appealing. But I knew this was an experience we couldn't miss.

At the glacier base, we met our guide, who was incredibly knowledgeable and reassuring. He kitted us out with crampons, helmets, and ice axes, transforming us into a team of intrepid explorers. As we stepped onto the ice, I felt a surge of excitement mixed with a healthy dose of respect for the power of nature. The glacier was a mesmerizing landscape of blue ice, deep crevasses, and towering ice formations.
The hike was challenging but incredibly rewarding. We learned about the glacier's formation, its impact on the surrounding environment, and the effects of climate change. It was a sobering reminder of the importance of environmental sustainability, a cause close to my heart. Jasmine was fascinated by the ice caves and moulins, while David, ever the engineer, peppered our guide with questions about the glacier's structure and movement. I even managed to avoid any major tumbles, although there were a few close calls that had us all laughing.
The earth has music for those who listen.
After our exhilarating glacier experience, we drove towards Kerid Crater, a vibrant volcanic crater lake. But first, lunch! We stopped at Ishusid Pizzeria Restaurant in Höfn for a well-deserved meal. This cozy restaurant is known for its delicious pizzas and friendly atmosphere. We devoured a couple of their specialty pizzas, including one with fresh lobster, a local delicacy. Jasmine, being a vegetarian, opted for a four-cheese pizza, which she declared was the best she'd ever had. David enjoyed the fish and chips and noted the freshness of the fish. Feeling refreshed and energized, we continued our journey to Kerid Crater.

As we approached the crater, the landscape transformed once again, from icy white to fiery red. Kerid Crater is a stunning geological wonder, with steep red slopes surrounding a deep blue lake. The contrast of colors was simply breathtaking. We paid the small entrance fee and walked along the rim of the crater, taking in the panoramic views. The wind was strong, but the views were worth it. We then descended the path to the water's edge, where we sat for a while, soaking in the tranquility of the surroundings.

Kerid Crater is a relatively young crater, formed about 3,000 years ago. The lake's vibrant blue color is due to the minerals in the soil. It's a place of serene beauty, a testament to the raw power of nature. As I gazed into the deep blue water, I felt a sense of peace and connection to the earth. It was the perfect way to end our Icelandic adventure.
For our final dinner in Iceland, we decided to try Geysir Glima restaurant, drawn in by the promise of traditional Icelandic cuisine. The restaurant's decor paid homage to glíma, Iceland's traditional wrestling sport, adding a unique cultural touch. We indulged in a hearty meal of lamb dishes and fresh seafood, savoring the authentic flavors of Iceland. The meal was the perfect culmination of our culinary journey through this amazing country.
