Kyoto's Quiet Corners & Culinary Heights

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey from the hushed reverence of Kyoto's imperial villas and ancient shrines to the vibrant sizzle of a Kobe beef steakhouse. It was a day that reminded me why I travel: to find those unexpected moments of peace and excitement, to weave together the threads of culture and cuisine into a tapestry of unforgettable memories.

My day began with a sense of anticipation as I set out to explore the Shugakuin Imperial Villa. Securing a reservation for these sites can be a bit tricky, but it's always worth the effort! The villa is nestled against the backdrop of Mount Hiei, a sprawling estate divided into three distinct gardens. As I walked along the gravel paths, the crisp morning air filled my lungs, and the only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the distant chirping of birds. It was easy to imagine emperors of old seeking solace here, far removed from the bustle of the capital.

The villa's design is a testament to Japanese aesthetics, seamlessly blending architecture with the natural landscape. The ponds, meticulously manicured trees, and strategically placed stones created a sense of harmony and balance. It was a masterclass in 'borrowed scenery,' where the surrounding mountains became an integral part of the garden's composition. I spent a good amount of time just sitting by the Yokuryu Pond, letting the tranquility wash over me. I made sure to take a lot of pictures, too, to share with David and Jasmine when I get back. They would have loved to see this.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand gestures, but in the quiet moments of observation and reflection.

Next on my itinerary was Murin-an Garden, a hidden gem tucked away in the Okazaki district. Unlike the more traditional gardens of Kyoto, Murin-an embraces a modern, naturalistic style. Built by statesman Yamagata Aritomo during the Meiji era, it reflects a shift towards Westernization and a desire to incorporate elements of the natural world into the garden design. The garden's designer, Ogawa Jihei, created a dynamic landscape with flowing streams, cascading waterfalls, and lush greenery. It felt more like a mountain village than a meticulously planned garden.

One of the highlights of Murin-an was the Western-style brick house, a striking contrast to the traditional Japanese buildings on the property. Apparently, this was where Yamagata Aritomo held secret meetings with his ministers in the lead-up to the Russo-Japanese War. It's amazing to think that such pivotal decisions were made in this serene setting. I also took the opportunity to try some matcha tea and Japanese sweets in the main Japanese house, overlooking the gardens. It was the perfect way to savor the beauty of the surroundings and reflect on the history that unfolded here.

My final stop of the afternoon was Shimogamo Shrine, one of Kyoto's oldest and most important Shinto sanctuaries. Stepping through the towering torii gate, I felt a sense of reverence and awe. The shrine is surrounded by the Tadasu no Mori forest, a primeval woodland that has been preserved for centuries. Walking through the forest, with its towering trees and winding streams, felt like stepping back in time. I learned that in ancient times, people would come to this forest to settle their disputes, believing that the sacred atmosphere would expose any lies or deceit.

The shrine itself is a beautiful example of traditional Shinto architecture, with its vermilion-colored buildings and gracefully curved roofs. I took some time to wander through the complex, admiring the intricate details and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. I even visited the Mitarashi-sha subsidiary shrine, located over a fresh underground spring. It's said that bathing your feet in the spring water can wash away sins and illnesses, and ensure a safe birth. Though I didn't partake in the foot-bathing, I did appreciate the picturesque scene and the sense of tranquility that permeated the area.

After a day of exploring Kyoto's serene side, it was time for a culinary adventure. I started my gastronomic journey with breakfast at Fujiya. Fujiya, near the Kibune Shrine, is known for its freshwater fish cuisine. Although I didn't have the chance to experience their famed *kawadoko* (riverside dining) due to the season, the traditional Japanese breakfast was a delightful start to my day. The restaurant, with its 170-year history, offered a serene ambiance that perfectly complemented the meal.

For lunch, I decided to try something different and headed to Goichi Pizza. After days of traditional Japanese cuisine, I was craving a taste of home. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the pizza. The crust was perfectly crispy and chewy, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. It was a welcome change of pace and a reminder that even in the heart of Japan, you can find delicious international cuisine.

But the highlight of my day, the culinary crescendo, was dinner at Kobe Beef Steak Restaurant MOURIYA GION. I had heard so much about Kobe beef, and I was eager to experience it for myself. From the moment I stepped into the restaurant, I knew I was in for a special treat. The elegant decor, the attentive staff, and the tantalizing aroma of sizzling beef all contributed to the anticipation.

I opted for the tasting menu, which featured a selection of Kobe sirloin and filet, grilled to perfection right before my eyes. The chef was a master of his craft, carefully tending to each piece of meat and ensuring that it was cooked to the ideal temperature. As the first bite of Kobe beef melted in my mouth, I understood what all the fuss was about. The texture was incredibly tender, almost buttery, and the flavor was rich, complex, and utterly divine. It was a symphony of sensations, a culinary experience that I will never forget. The meal also included soup, salad, grilled vegetables, and a choice of rice or bread, each dish perfectly complementing the star of the show. I also enjoyed some crispy garlic chips with the steak, and it was heavenly!

To cap off this incredible day, I decided to visit Bar Dram for a nightcap. Nestled in Kyoto's charming Kiyamachi district, it was the perfect spot to unwind. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate, with a wide selection of spirits and expertly crafted cocktails. I decided on a classic Japanese whiskey, the Hakushu 12, and savored each sip as I reflected on the day's adventures. It was the perfect ending to a day that had been both serene and exhilarating.

As I walked back to The Hiramatsu Kyoto, the city lights twinkling around me, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings, as I plan to explore the Samurai & Ninja Museum with Experience, Kodaiji Temple, and Maruyama Park. But for now, I'll drift off to sleep, dreaming of ancient villas, tranquil gardens, and the unforgettable taste of Kobe beef.

I realized I forgot to pack an adapter for the Japanese electrical outlets and sunscreen, which I will need to purchase tomorrow. But for now, I am going to sleep and prepare myself for tomorrow's adventures.
