Echoes of the Past, Whispers of the Present

Today was a day of deep exploration and reflection in Nikko. It felt like stepping back in time, wandering through landscapes that have been revered for centuries. From the spiritual depths of the Kanmangafuchi Abyss, every moment was filled with a sense of wonder and connection. I'm so excited to share these experiences with you all.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Restaurant BELL. It was a quaint and cozy spot that offered a delightful start to our adventures. Anika was particularly excited about the Japanese Temple food set, also known as the Monk's diet. I was happy they could prepare a vegan miso soup for her, using seaweed dashi instead of the traditional fish broth. It's these small, thoughtful gestures that make a dining experience truly special. Vikram and I enjoyed some delicious coffee, gearing up for the day ahead.

Next on our itinerary was the Kanmangafuchi Abyss. As we approached, the air grew cooler, and a sense of tranquility washed over us. The abyss is a gorge formed by the ancient eruptions of Mount Nantai, and the serene beauty of the place is captivating. The highlight of the abyss is the rows of Jizo statues, standing as silent guardians of the river. These statues, known as 'Bake Jizo' or 'Ghost Jizo', have a unique and contemplative presence. It’s said that if you try to count them, you’ll never get the same number twice, adding to the mystical aura of the place.

The journey of a lifetime involves embracing the unknown, respecting the sacred, and finding peace in the present.

I found myself lost in thought, reflecting on the impermanence of life and the enduring power of faith. Anika was fascinated by the moss-covered statues, each wearing a red bib and cap. She tried to count them, giggling as she lost track each time. It was a beautiful moment, watching her connect with the spiritual energy of the place. Vikram, ever the photographer, captured the ethereal beauty of the scene, the sunlight filtering through the trees, illuminating the serene faces of the Jizo statues.

After spending a good hour at the abyss, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, we headed towards our next destination: Nikkō Tōshōgū. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. As we approached the shrine, the sheer scale and grandeur of the complex took my breath away. The intricate carvings, vibrant colors, and gold leaf accents were a testament to the power and wealth of the Tokugawa shogunate.

We entered through the main gate, marveling at the Yomeimon Gate, known as one of the most beautiful gates in Japan. With over 500 intricate carvings, it was a feast for the eyes. Anika was particularly drawn to the carving of the three wise monkeys – see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil – and we spent a few minutes discussing the meaning behind this famous motif.

Inside the shrine, we explored the various halls and temples, each more opulent than the last. The level of detail in the architecture was astounding, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of reverence for the artisans who had created these masterpieces centuries ago. We paid our respects at the tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu, a simple yet dignified structure surrounded by towering cedar trees.

For lunch, we had reservations at Nikko Yubamaki ZEN. I had read so much about Yuba, a local delicacy made from tofu skin, and was excited to try it. The restaurant was located along the Japan Romantic Road, and the ambiance was serene and inviting. We started with the Nikko yubamaki, which featured Tochigi wagyu beef and seasonal vegetables wrapped in yuba. The combination of flavors was exquisite, and the yuba added a unique texture to the dish.

I opted for the Nikko yubamaki course meal, which consisted of several small dishes, each showcasing yuba in a different way. From yuba sashimi to yuba tempura, every dish was a culinary delight. Vikram and Anika chose the Soy Milk Shabu-Shabu, with its rich umami flavor. The broth, made from sea bream dashi stock, was so delicious they couldn't resist drinking every last drop. The meal ended with a soy milk pudding topped with yuba, matcha jelly, and sweetened red bean. It was the perfect ending to an unforgettable meal.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to have dinner at Yuba ryōri Aburagen. This restaurant is known for its traditional yuba dishes and its warm, welcoming atmosphere. We ordered a variety of dishes, including yuba stew, yuba sashimi, and yuba croquettes. Each dish was delicious and comforting, and we savored every bite.

After dinner, we stopped by The Bar for a nightcap. Located in The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko, this bar is known for its extensive whiskey collection and its creative cocktails. Vikram and I enjoyed a couple of drinks while Anika sipped on a sparkling juice. The ambiance was sophisticated and relaxing, and it was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

Today was a day of contrasts – from the serene beauty of the Kanmangafuchi Abyss to the opulent grandeur of Nikkō Tōshōgū. It was a day of spiritual awakening, culinary delights, and family bonding. I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of Nikko.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Takatsudo Gorge and Narabi Jizō. I’ve heard that Takatsudo Gorge is a hidden gem, with stunning waterfalls and lush greenery. Narabi Jizō, also known as the 'row of Jizo statues', is another spiritual site that I’m excited to visit. We also plan to visit Nikkokohi Tamamokoji, a local shop known for its unique coffee blends.

As I reflect on our adventures today, I’m reminded of the importance of embracing the present moment and finding beauty in the simple things. Nikko has a way of slowing you down, of inviting you to connect with nature and with your own inner self. It’s a place that will stay with me long after we’ve left, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to discover new cultures, to experience new things, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. I am also grateful to be able to share these experiences with my family, as we navigate the world together, learning and growing with each passing day. Though I wish I hadn't forgotten the sunscreen today, I'll be sure to pack it tomorrow!

Until tomorrow, friends. Safe travels and happy exploring!
