Day 1: Kyoto's Golden Glimmer: Temples, Gardens, and Culinary Firsts
Discover Kyoto's enchanting beauty through golden temples, serene gardens, and exquisite cuisine in this immersive solo adventure.
A Golden Start to My Kyoto Adventure
The first day of any trip is always a mix of excitement and slight disorientation. Arriving in Kyoto, I felt immediately drawn into the city's serene atmosphere, a stark contrast to the bustling energy of Leipzig. Today was all about immersing myself in the iconic sights and flavors of Kyoto, and it certainly didn't disappoint.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kizahashi, located in The Thousand Kyoto hotel where I'm staying. The traditional Japanese breakfast set the perfect tone for a day of cultural exploration. The delicate flavors and beautiful presentation were a testament to the artistry of Japanese cuisine, a prelude to the culinary adventures that await me on this trip. It reminded me of the care and precision I put into my own Nepali dishes back in Leipzig. I even made a mental note to try and recreate some of the dishes for Anjali when I get back. She would love the delicate flavors, I'm sure of it.
First stop: Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. I'd seen countless photos of this iconic temple, but nothing prepared me for the sheer brilliance of the gold leaf shimmering in the morning light. The temple's reflection on the pond was mesmerizing. Despite the crowds, I found a sense of tranquility just gazing at its beauty. Perhaps it was the crisp February air or the gentle breeze rustling through the surrounding trees, but I felt a deep connection to the history and spirituality of this place.

Travel is more than seeing the sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
After Kinkaku-ji, I headed to the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The palace grounds were vast and impressive, offering a glimpse into the lives of Japan's imperial family. I wandered through the meticulously maintained gardens, imagining the emperors and empresses who once strolled these same paths. I learned that special spring opening exhibits paintings and other works. Though the buildings themselves were impressive, it was the sense of history that truly captivated me. It made me think about the rich history of Nepal and the palaces of the Malla and Shah dynasties. I wondered if Arjun would be interested in visiting some of those historical sites with me someday.

Next on the itinerary was the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. It was a welcome escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Even in February, there was plenty to see, with plum blossoms adding pops of color to the landscape. I strolled through the gardens, admiring the diverse plant life and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. It reminded me of my own small garden back in Leipzig, where I grow Nepali herbs and vegetables. I found myself particularly drawn to the plum grove, which was filled with about 120 plums of 60 varieties. The plum blossom season usually peaks between mid-February and early March here. It was a refreshing experience to see these early bloomers braving the winter chill.

For lunch, I had made a reservation at Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura, a restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine. The restaurant was near the Imperial Palace, which made it a convenient stop after my visit. The set meal featured fresh fish and seasonal local vegetables. I opted for the Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option, which included six to seven kinds of Obanzai that paired perfectly with rice. It was a delightful culinary experience. The restaurant had a friendly atmosphere, and the staff was very welcoming, communicating with me using a translation app since I don't speak Japanese. The flavors were subtle yet complex, showcasing the chef's skill and the quality of the ingredients. I was particularly impressed by the Obanzai, which included pumpkin, taro root, bean curd lees, and hijiki seaweed. Each dish was a testament to the culinary traditions of Kyoto.

After lunch, I decided to do some shopping at the Daimaru Kyoto Store. It was founded in 1717. The department store had a wide range of high-quality items. I explored the various departments, from apparel and cosmetics to furniture and gourmet food. I was particularly drawn to the food department on the basement floor, which was perfect for souvenir hunting. I picked up some local sweets and snacks to bring back to Anjali and Arjun. The renovated rooftop plaza, KOTOHOT Terrace, was furnished with unique wooden furniture, creating a warm and inviting space. I took a break there, enjoying the lively atmosphere and the beautiful surroundings.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Kikunoi Roan for dinner, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant specializing in Kaiseki cuisine. This was a culinary experience I had been eagerly anticipating, and it did not disappoint. Each course was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. The chef's innovative use of ingredients and impeccable technique were truly impressive. The restaurant's creed, Food has no borders, was evident in the dishes, which incorporated Western ingredients like truffles and olive oil. It was a wonderful, delicious lunch and I felt nurtured by food, hospitality and atmosphere of Kikunoi Roan. I savored every bite, appreciating the artistry and dedication that went into each dish. It was a fitting end to a day of cultural and culinary exploration.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Tenryu-ji Temple, and Okochi Sanso Garden. I'm particularly excited to experience the serene beauty of the bamboo forest and to explore the historic Tenryu-ji Temple. I've also made reservations for dinner at Gion Nanba, a restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine. I am also planning to visit L'Escamoteur, a bar. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this captivating city.
Back at the hotel, I reflect on my first day in Kyoto. It was a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and flavors, a perfect introduction to this enchanting city. I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this culture and cuisine, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings. I'm also looking forward to sharing my experiences with Anjali and Arjun when I return to Leipzig. Perhaps this trip will inspire me to create some new dishes for my restaurant, blending the flavors of Nepal and Japan. Only time will tell.
For now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploration. Oyasumi nasai, Kyoto!
