Solo Cultural and Culinary Exploration in Kyoto
Day 12: Osaka's Grand Finale: A Culinary Chef's Last Day in Japan
Culinary chef Rama Thapa concludes his Japan adventure with Osaka's iconic sights and flavors, savoring every last moment of his solo trip.
Farewell, Kyoto, Hello Osaka!
As my culinary journey through Japan neared its end, I found myself on a train to Osaka, a city promising a vibrant contrast to the serene temples of Kyoto. This was it, my last day in this beautiful country, and I was determined to make the most of every moment. The blend of historical landmarks and bustling city life in Osaka was the perfect way to cap off my solo adventure.
My day began with a final breakfast at The Cellar Kyoto. As much as I've loved exploring the local cuisine, there's something comforting about a familiar breakfast to start the day. With a full stomach and a heart full of memories from Kyoto, I checked out of The Royal Park Hotel Iconic Kyoto, hopped on a train, and headed towards Osaka. The train ride itself was a treat, watching the landscape change as the urban sprawl of Osaka came into view.

My first stop was Osaka Castle. The grandeur of the castle against the clear February sky was truly breathtaking. The plum blossoms were just beginning to bloom in Osaka Castle Park, adding a touch of pink to the already stunning scenery. I spent a good few hours wandering around the castle grounds, soaking in the history and taking photos. Street performers added to the vibrant atmosphere, their music echoing through the park. It was fascinating to see the blend of traditional architecture and modern life coexisting so harmoniously.

Every journey, no matter how long or short, leaves an indelible mark on the soul.
After the historical immersion at Osaka Castle, it was time for lunch. I opted for a quick bite at Izutsu Yatsuhashi Honpo in Takashimaya Kyoto before heading to Osaka, savoring the flavors of Kyoto one last time. It was a delightful and convenient way to transition between the two cities, ensuring I didn't miss out on any culinary experiences. This little treat was the perfect bridge between the old and the new, a sweet reminder of the traditions I was leaving behind and the exciting discoveries that awaited me.

Next on my list was Dotonbori, Osaka's dazzling entertainment district. The sheer energy of the place was infectious. Bright lights, giant billboards, and the aroma of street food filled the air. I wandered along the canal, taking in the sights and sounds. Of course, I had to try some of the local delicacies. Takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancake) were high on my list, and they did not disappoint. The flavors were bold and satisfying, a true reflection of Osaka's culinary scene.

I then ventured to Namba Yasaka Jinja, a hidden gem known for its giant lion head statue. This unique shrine was a welcome contrast to the bustling streets of Dotonbori. The lion head, with its imposing presence, is said to swallow evil spirits and bring good luck. I spent some time exploring the shrine grounds, admiring the intricate details of the architecture and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. It was a fascinating blend of traditional spirituality and modern art.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Tategami for dinner. This restaurant, recommended by a local, offered a modern take on traditional Japanese cuisine. The dishes were innovative and beautifully presented, a testament to the chef's creativity and skill. I savored every bite, reflecting on the incredible culinary experiences I've had throughout my trip.

To end my last night in Japan, I decided to visit WORLD KYOTO, a bar known for its lively atmosphere. While it was a bit of a commute back to Kyoto from Osaka, I wanted to celebrate the end of my journey in style. I enjoyed a few drinks, chatted with fellow travelers, and danced the night away. It was the perfect way to bid farewell to Japan, a country that has captured my heart and inspired my culinary creativity.

This solo trip was a journey of self-discovery. As a chef, I'm constantly seeking new flavors and techniques to incorporate into my cooking. Japan has provided me with an abundance of inspiration, from the delicate artistry of sushi to the hearty comfort of ramen. I've learned to appreciate the importance of fresh, seasonal ingredients and the value of simplicity in cooking. These are lessons I will carry with me back to my restaurant in Leipzig.
But beyond the culinary aspect, this trip has also been a cultural immersion. I've learned about the history, traditions, and values of the Japanese people. I've been humbled by their kindness and hospitality. I've been inspired by their dedication to craftsmanship and their respect for nature. These are experiences that will stay with me long after I've returned home.
As I pack my bags and prepare for my flight back to Leipzig, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude. This trip has been a gift, a chance to escape the routine of daily life and reconnect with my passions. I'm excited to share my experiences with my wife, Anjali, and my son, Arjun. I know they will be eager to hear about my adventures and taste the new dishes I've created.
And who knows, maybe one day I'll return to Japan with Anjali. I'd love to show her the temples of Kyoto, the bustling streets of Osaka, and the serene beauty of the Japanese countryside. Until then, I'll cherish the memories I've made on this solo culinary exploration.
Until next time, Japan. Thank you for the food, the culture and the memories.
