Elephants, Eats, and Evening Beats

Today was a day of contrasts, from the serene presence of rescued elephants to the bustling flavors of Chiang Mai's culinary scene. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day here, and I'm loving sharing these experiences with Klara and Naomi. We're making memories that will last a lifetime, and I can't wait to tell you all about it.

Our Sunday began with a hearty breakfast at Its Good Kitchen. I'd heard great things about this place, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The mango sticky rice was a particular highlight, Naomi practically inhaled hers! Klara enjoyed a traditional Thai breakfast, while I opted for something a bit spicier to kickstart my day. Fuelled up, we headed to the Elephant Nature Park office.

The excitement was palpable, especially for Naomi, who couldn't stop talking about seeing the elephants.

The Elephant Nature Park is truly a special place. It's not just a tourist attraction; it's a sanctuary where rescued elephants can live out their lives in peace and dignity. The staff are incredibly passionate about what they do, and their dedication to these gentle giants is truly inspiring. We spent the morning learning about the elephants' individual stories, each one a tale of hardship and resilience. It's heartbreaking to hear what these animals have been through, but it's also uplifting to see them thriving in their new home.

We got to feed the elephants, which was an incredible experience. Their trunks are surprisingly strong and dexterous, and it was amazing to feel them gently take the food from our hands. Naomi was a bit nervous at first, but she quickly warmed up to them, giggling as they tickled her palms with their whiskers. It's moments like these that make traveling as a family so rewarding.

Seeing these majestic creatures up close, knowing they've been rescued from such difficult circumstances, really puts things into perspective.

After a morning of elephant encounters, we were ready for lunch. We decided to try The Swan Burmese Cuisine, a local spot known for its authentic Burmese dishes.

I've always been fascinated by the flavors of Myanmar, and this was the perfect opportunity to explore them. The tea leaf salad was a revelation – a unique and flavorful combination of textures and tastes that I'll definitely be trying to recreate back in Berlin. Klara opted for a comforting curry, while Naomi surprised us all by devouring a plate of noodles. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home.

As the afternoon wore on, we took some time to simply wander through the streets of Chiang Mai, soaking in the atmosphere and admiring the architecture. The city is a fascinating blend of old and new, with ancient temples nestled alongside modern buildings. The air is filled with the scent of street food and the sounds of bustling markets, creating a sensory overload that's both exhilarating and exhausting.

Dinner was at Favola Chiang Mai, an Italian restaurant that came highly recommended.

Now, I know what you're thinking: Italian food in Thailand? But trust me, this place is special. The chef uses premium Italian ingredients and fresh, locally sourced produce to create authentic and flavorful dishes. The pasta was perfectly cooked, the sauces were rich and decadent, and the wine list was extensive. It was a welcome change of pace after days of Thai food, and it reminded me of the flavors of Europe.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Paradise Bar, a laid-back spot with a great atmosphere.

I opted for a local beer, while Klara enjoyed a cocktail. Naomi, of course, stuck to juice. We chatted, laughed, and listened to music, soaking in the Chiang Mai nightlife. It's amazing how quickly you can feel at home in a new place, especially when you're surrounded by good company and good vibes.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore some of Chiang Mai's temples, including Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Umong Suan Putthatham. I'm particularly excited to see Wat Chedi Luang, which is known for its impressive ruined chedi. We'll also be stopping by Mainiji.Everyday Craft Shop to pick up some souvenirs. And of course, we'll be indulging in more delicious food along the way. I'm already looking forward to it!

As I reflect on today, I'm filled with gratitude for the experiences we've had. From the gentle giants of the Elephant Nature Park to the vibrant flavors of Chiang Mai's culinary scene, every moment has been a gift. I'm so grateful to be able to share these adventures with my family, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Until then, good night from Chiang Mai!

I almost forgot to mention, there are several events happening in Chiang Mai this month! I read about the Chiang Mai Food Festival, which celebrates health, happiness, and culture with traditional flavors and insightful talks. Also, the 40th Borsang Umbrella and Sankhampaeng Craft Festival sounds amazing, with its stunning display of hand-painted paper parasols and handcrafted products. Maybe we can squeeze one of these in before we leave!

It's moments like these that make me realize how lucky I am to be doing what I love. Sharing my experiences with you all, and hopefully inspiring you to embark on your own adventures, is truly a dream come true.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to bed. Tomorrow is another day of exploring, and I want to be well-rested. Good night, and sweet dreams!

P.S. I almost forgot! I'm still kicking myself for forgetting the mosquito repellent. Those little buggers are relentless! And a portable phone charger would have been a lifesaver today. Note to self: always double-check the essentials list!
