Solo Art Adventure in Naoshima Island
Day 10: Artful Farewell: Reflecting on Naoshima's Beauty
Saying goodbye to Naoshima Island after a week of art, culture, and culinary delights. Reflecting on favorite spots and the island's charm.
Island Echoes: A Final Bow to Naoshima
As my time on Naoshima Island draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact this little slice of paradise has had on me. It's funny how a place can seep into your soul, altering your perspective and leaving an indelible mark. Today was all about soaking in those last moments, revisiting favorite spots, and savoring the unique atmosphere that makes this island so special.
The day started with a hearty breakfast at Tee's DELI GROCERY. I wanted to fuel up for a day of exploration and reflection. I grabbed a Jamaican-sized portion of eggs, toast and coffee. I tell you, it was just what I needed! The sun was shining, and the air was filled with that salty, sea breeze that I've come to adore. I sat outside, watching the locals go about their morning routines, feeling a sense of peace I rarely experience back in Berlin.

After breakfast, I decided to pay one last visit to the iconic Red Pumpkin at Miyanoura Port. It felt like the perfect way to begin my final day. This vibrant sculpture by Yayoi Kusama has become synonymous with Naoshima, greeting visitors upon arrival and bidding them farewell upon departure. As I approached, I couldn't help but smile at the sight of the familiar polka dots against the backdrop of the sparkling Seto Inland Sea. I took my time wandering around the pumpkin, admiring its quirky charm and snapping a few last photos.

Art helps us appreciate the fact that we are thinking animals.
It's amazing how Kusama's work manages to be both playful and profound, inviting viewers to contemplate the nature of existence and the interconnectedness of all things. I even ventured inside the pumpkin, peering out through the portholes and marveling at the way the light filtered through the red fiberglass. It was a whimsical experience that perfectly captured the spirit of Naoshima.
Next on my agenda was a visit to Danyama, an observation deck offering panoramic views of the island and the surrounding sea. I hopped on a local bus and made my way to the trailhead, eager to stretch my legs and soak in the scenery. The hike to the top was a bit steep in places, but the effort was well worth it. As I ascended, I passed through lush forests of cedar and bamboo, listening to the gentle rustle of leaves and the chirping of birds. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of pine and earth. When I finally reached the summit, I was greeted by a breathtaking vista that stretched out in every direction.

From my vantage point, I could see the entire island laid out before me, a patchwork of green hills, quaint villages, and shimmering coastline. The Seto Inland Sea sparkled in the sunlight, dotted with tiny islands that seemed to float on the horizon. I spent a good hour simply gazing at the view, letting the beauty of nature wash over me and clear my mind.
As lunchtime approached, I made my way to Terrace Restaurant. I was ready for a delicious meal with a view. I decided to treat myself to a seafood lunch, savoring the fresh flavors of the ocean while enjoying the tranquil atmosphere of the restaurant. The breeze was gentle, and the sun was warm – a perfect combination.

After lunch, I decided to do a little shopping at the 7-Eleven Naoshima Shop. I know, it might seem like an odd choice, but I wanted to pick up a few last-minute souvenirs and snacks for the journey home. Plus, I was curious to see what kind of local products they had on offer. I ended up buying a few Naoshima-themed postcards, some Japanese sweets, and a bottle of local sake to share with Klara and Naomi back in Berlin. I'm sure they'll appreciate a taste of my adventure.

As the day wore on, I found myself reflecting on my time on Naoshima and how this trip has had a profound impact on me. I thought about the incredible art I'd seen, the delicious food I'd eaten, and the fascinating people I'd met. But most of all, I thought about the sense of peace and tranquility that I'd found on this little island. It's a feeling that I know I'll carry with me long after I've left.
For my last dinner on the island, I chose Luke's Pizza & Grill. I wanted something casual and comforting, and pizza seemed like just the ticket. I ordered a margherita pizza with extra cheese and a side of garlic bread, and settled in for a relaxed meal. The pizza was delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was laid-back – everything I could have asked for. As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences I'd had on Naoshima. It's been a truly unforgettable journey, one that I know I'll cherish for years to come.

As I sit here now, packing my bags and preparing to leave in the morning, I can't help but feel a little sad. But I also know that this isn't goodbye forever. I have a feeling that I'll be back to Naoshima someday, to once again immerse myself in its art, culture, and natural beauty. Until then, I'll carry the memories of this trip with me, like precious souvenirs that remind me of the power of art to transform and inspire.
Tomorrow, I'm heading back to Tokyo, and then it's off to Berlin. I'm looking forward to seeing Klara and Naomi again, and sharing all my stories with them. But a part of me will always remain on this small art island, wandering through its museums and galleries, listening to the whispers of the wind, and savoring the flavors of its local cuisine. Naoshima has been an extraordinary experience, one that I will cherish for years to come. It's a place that has challenged my perspectives, awakened my senses, and nourished my soul.
Before I end this blog, I want to share a conversation I had with a local artist. He said something that really resonated with me:
Naoshima is not just an island, it's a feeling.
And he couldn't be more right. It's a feeling of peace, inspiration, and connection that I'll carry with me wherever I go. Yaad man, until next time!
