Solo Art Adventure in Naoshima Island
Day 3: Artful Reflections: A Day of Minimalism and Light on Naoshima
Discover the serene beauty of Naoshima through the Lee Ufan Museum and Art House Project, a journey of art, architecture, and introspection.
Finding Stillness in Art
Today was a day of quiet contemplation and artistic immersion here on Naoshima. Leaving the vibrant energy of yesterday behind, I set out to explore the more minimalist and introspective side of the island’s art scene. It was a journey into the heart of light, space, and the profound impact of simplicity.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at maimai. I decided to try their famous fish burger. It was a delightful way to start the day, sitting on the terrace, enjoying the island's laid-back vibe before diving into the day's artistic adventures.

First on the agenda was the Lee Ufan Museum. Designed by the masterful Tadao Ando, this museum is a seamless blend of architecture and nature. As I approached, I was immediately struck by the building's understated elegance. The concrete structures seemed to rise organically from the earth, fitting perfectly into the landscape. It's a place where the noise fades away, and you're left with nothing but the art and your thoughts. The Seto Inland Sea shimmered in the distance, a constant reminder of the beauty that surrounds this island.

Art is not about the object but about the space in between.
Inside, the museum is a sanctuary of minimalist art. Lee Ufan's works, primarily sculptures and installations using stone, concrete, and steel, invite you to contemplate the relationships between objects, space, and time. Each piece is strategically placed to interact with the natural light that filters through the building, creating a dynamic interplay of shadows and reflections. I found myself drawn to the stillness of the space, a welcome contrast to the bustling world I left behind in Berlin. It reminded me of the importance of finding moments of peace and reflection, something I definitely need more of back at Yaad Vibes.
After spending a good few hours at the Lee Ufan Museum, I decided to grab some lunch. Ebisukamo was my choice, a charming little Japanese restaurant known for its fresh, seasonal ingredients. The restaurant’s warm and inviting atmosphere was just what I needed after a morning of contemplative art. I savored every bite, appreciating the simple yet exquisite flavors of the local cuisine.

Next up was the Art House Project: Minamidera. This project, scattered throughout the Honmura district, breathes new life into abandoned houses, transforming them into unique art spaces. Minamidera, another collaboration with Tadao Ando, houses James Turrell's Backside of the Moon, an experience that plays with your perception of light and space.

Entering Minamidera is like stepping into another dimension. After a brief introduction, I was led into a pitch-black room. The darkness was absolute, disorienting at first. Slowly, as my eyes adjusted, a faint light began to emerge, revealing a large rectangular space. It was an exercise in patience and perception, a reminder that sometimes the most profound experiences come from waiting and observing. It was a bit like waiting for the perfect jerk chicken to finish on the grill – patience is key, and the reward is well worth it.
The Art House Project, in general, is a brilliant concept. It's a way of preserving the history and character of the island while infusing it with contemporary art. Wandering through the streets of Honmura, discovering these hidden gems, is an adventure in itself. It makes you wonder about the stories these houses hold and the lives that were once lived within their walls. I couldn't help but think about the old house back in Linstead where I grew up, filled with memories and the echoes of laughter and domino games.
As the day wound down, I found myself at Cin.na.mon, a stylish restaurant and bar near Miyanoura Port. I decided to treat myself to their famous Naoshima seafood curry. The blend of spices and fresh seafood was the perfect way to end a day filled with art and introspection. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, a great spot to unwind and reflect on the day's experiences.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore more of the Art House Project, including the Go'o Shrine, and perhaps even take a dip in the Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu. I also plan on visiting Mikazukishoten, a local shop. But for now, I'm content to soak in the tranquility of this island and the memories of a day spent in the company of art.
Naoshima continues to surprise and inspire me. It's a place where art is not confined to museums but permeates every aspect of life. It's a place where you can slow down, reconnect with yourself, and find beauty in the simplest of things. And as a chef and a traveler, I can't ask for much more than that.
Until tomorrow,
Robert
