Solo Art Adventure in Naoshima Island
Day 7: Kinetic Wonders and Dental Transformations: Artful Adventures in Honmura
Exploring the kinetic art of George Rickey and the surreal Art House Project in Honmura, Naoshima. A day of artistic discovery!
Swinging Sculptures and Surreal Smiles
Today was all about diving deeper into Naoshima's art scene, specifically in the charming district of Honmura. I was eager to experience the blend of kinetic art and the quirky transformations within the Art House Project. It promised to be a day of unexpected discoveries, and, let me tell you, Naoshima never disappoints.
I started my day with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. It's a cozy little spot, perfect for fueling up before a day of art exploration. I had their signature breakfast set, which included a delicious mix of local ingredients – the kind of meal that makes you feel ready to take on anything. I even managed to practice my Japanese with the friendly staff, a little effort that always brings a smile to everyone's face. It’s a small thing, but those little connections make all the difference, y’know?

First up on the itinerary was the George Rickey Three Squares Vertical Diagonal. Now, I’ve seen sculptures before, but this was something else. The way the squares moved with the wind, creating these ever-changing patterns against the backdrop of the island… it was mesmerizing. I spent a good while just watching, lost in the rhythm of the sculpture. It reminded me of the simple joys in life, like watching the waves roll in back home in Linstead. It’s funny how art can evoke such strong feelings and memories.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After the kinetic beauty of Rickey’s work, I ventured into the Art House Project: Haisha. This was the one I was most curious about. An old dental clinic transformed into an art installation? Sign me up! The moment I stepped inside, I was transported to another world. The blend of the building's original features with the surreal artistic interventions was mind-blowing. I won't spoil all the surprises, but let's just say there's a certain tower that you absolutely have to climb – it offers a perspective on art, and life, that you won't find anywhere else.

For lunch, I headed over to Gumbo Hut Shioya. I was craving something different, and this place definitely hit the spot. The gumbo was rich and flavorful, a welcome change from the Japanese cuisine I’d been indulging in. It was a bit like a taste of home, reminding me of the spicy dishes Klara sometimes tries to recreate… bless her heart, she tries! It was a satisfying meal that gave me the energy I needed for the rest of the day.

In the evening, I decided to treat myself to dinner at RestaurantEN. This place is known for its modern take on traditional Japanese cuisine. I opted for the tasting menu, and each dish was a work of art in itself. The flavors were delicate and refined, a perfect end to a day filled with artistic exploration. I even tried a local sake, which the waiter recommended – smooth, with a hint of sweetness. It was the perfect complement to the meal.

To cap off the night, I found myself at Honmura Lounge & Archive. It's a cozy little bar with a great atmosphere. I sipped on a local craft beer, chatted with some of the locals, and soaked in the laid-back vibe. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day’s experiences. I even met a fellow traveler from Australia, and we swapped stories about our adventures. It’s moments like these that make traveling so rewarding – the chance to connect with people from all walks of life.

It’s funny, you know. Before I came to Naoshima, I thought it was just about the art. But it’s so much more than that. It’s about the people, the culture, the way the island makes you feel. It’s about slowing down, taking it all in, and appreciating the simple things. It’s a lesson I think we could all use a little more of, especially back in the hustle and bustle of Berlin.
I was thinking about Naomi today, too. She would have loved the George Rickey sculpture. She's always been fascinated by things that move and change. I’ll have to show her some pictures when I get back. Maybe one day, we can all come here together. I think she'd get a kick out of the dental clinic turned art installation, too. She's got such a vivid imagination, just like her mom.
Tomorrow, I’m planning to visit Gokurakuji Temple and the Walking Ark. I’ve heard great things about both, and I’m excited to see what they have to offer. I might also check out Café Ippo for breakfast – I’ve heard they make a mean cup of coffee. And who knows, maybe I’ll stumble upon another hidden gem along the way. That’s the beauty of Naoshima – there’s always something new to discover.
Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I took a final stroll through Honmura. The island was quiet, the stars were out, and the air was filled with the scent of the sea. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day. As I walked, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this solo adventure. It’s given me the chance to reconnect with myself, to explore my passions, and to appreciate the beauty of the world around me. And as I drifted off to sleep, I knew that tomorrow would bring even more adventures.

I tell you, this trip is doing me good. It's a good thing to step away from the Yaad Vibes sometimes, even though I miss Klara and Naomi something fierce. It allows me to get some inspiration for new dishes, new ideas, and a new appreciation for the life I've built. Plus, I can't wait to bring back some stories for Naomi. She's always asking about my travels, and I love sharing my experiences with her. It's like bringing a piece of the world back home.
Until tomorrow, friends. Stay irie!
