Family Adventure in Historic Kanazawa
Day 9: A Step Back in Time: Exploring Kanazawa's Enchanting Nishi Chaya District
Wander through Kanazawa's Nishi Chaya District, explore geisha culture, and savor local flavors. A captivating journey into Japan's past.
Whispers of the Past
Today was a day of gentle exploration, a chance to step back in time and soak in the atmosphere of old Kanazawa. Elena and Miguel joined me as we ventured into the Nishi Chaya District, one of the city's well-preserved geisha districts. It felt like walking onto a movie set, with the traditional wooden teahouses lining the narrow street, each holding stories of a bygone era.

Our first stop was the Kanazawa Nishi-chaya Museum. It’s a small, free museum housed in a former teahouse, offering a glimpse into the lives of the geiko who once entertained wealthy patrons here. The meticulously preserved rooms, with their elegant décor and traditional furnishings, transported us to another world. Elena, with her nursing background, was particularly interested in the historical context and the daily lives of the women who lived and worked in these spaces. Miguel, ever the observant one, was fascinated by the intricate details of the architecture. I appreciated the quiet reverence of the place, a stark contrast to the bustling city just beyond its walls.

After the museum, we strolled along the main street of the Nishi Chaya District. Many of the old teahouses have been converted into sweet shops and cafes, blending the old with the new. It was a delight to peek into the windows, imagining the lively entertainment that once filled these rooms. The district is much smaller and quieter compared to the Higashi Chaya District, which we visited earlier in the trip, but it holds a unique charm. The red lanterns hanging outside each establishment added a splash of color to the otherwise muted tones of the wooden buildings.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quiet corners of history. For breakfast, we started our day at Iki-iki Tei. This charming spot is nestled in Omicho Market. This cozy restaurant, with its intimate setting and only ten seats, offered an authentic taste of Kanazawa. I opted for the Kaisen Don, a vibrant bowl brimming with fresh seafood. Elena chose the chef's special, while Miguel, always the adventurous eater, tried a local delicacy. The freshness of the ingredients was undeniable, and the flavors were a delightful explosion in our mouths. The miso soup, rich with dashi broth, was the perfect complement to our meal. It was a truly memorable start to the day, setting the tone for our exploration of Kanazawa's culinary scene.

We took our time wandering through the Nishi Chaya District, soaking in the atmosphere and snapping photos. Miguel, with his youthful energy, was particularly drawn to a small coffee stand called MAMEノマノマ, drawn by the promise of good coffee and a glimpse of a traditional warehouse. We found a peaceful spot by a tiny stream and enjoyed our drinks. Elena and I shared stories of our own families, drawing parallels to the lives of those who lived in this district so long ago. It was a moment of connection, a reminder of the shared human experience that transcends time and culture.
For lunch, we had reservations at A_RESTAURANT, which promised an innovative dining experience. The restaurant's interior was stunning, with high ceilings and an international ambiance. The food was equally impressive, a fusion of local ingredients and modern culinary techniques. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. Elena appreciated the attention to detail, while Miguel enjoyed the creative combinations of textures and tastes. For me, it was a chance to experience Kanazawa's culinary scene in a unique and unexpected way.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in some shopping at Kanazawa Hyakubangai, located within Kanazawa Station. The station itself is a marvel, a modern transportation hub seamlessly integrated with traditional design elements. Hyakubangai is a shopper's paradise, with a wide array of shops selling everything from local crafts to high-end fashion. We explored the “Anto” area, known for its souvenir shops and restaurants. Elena picked up some local sweets for her colleagues back at the hospital, while Miguel found a unique piece of pottery to add to his collection. I was on the hunt for some local sake, hoping to bring a taste of Kanazawa back to Stratford. Hyakubangai is conveniently located, making it easy to pop in for a quick shopping trip before catching a train.

As the evening approached, we made our way to Genzaemon for dinner. Located in the Katamachi area, this restaurant offered a taste of authentic Kanazawa cuisine. We settled into a cozy corner and perused the menu, eager to sample some local specialties. I opted for the Jibuni, a traditional duck stew, while Elena chose the grilled Nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch). Miguel, ever the adventurous one, decided to try the Kaga vegetables, a selection of locally grown produce prepared in various ways. Each dish was a celebration of Kanazawa's culinary heritage, showcasing the region's fresh ingredients and traditional cooking techniques. The sake selection was also impressive, with a wide variety of local brews to choose from. We savored each sip, letting the flavors transport us to the heart of Kanazawa.
