Family Adventure in the Masurian Lake District
Day 13: Stargazing and Lakeside Serenity: A Day of Discovery in Masuria
Explore the wonders of the cosmos at the Olsztyn Observatory and unwind by the serene Plaża przy księżycowym dworku.
Cosmic Wonders and Lakeside Bliss
Today was a beautiful blend of intellectual curiosity and serene relaxation. We started our day diving into the mysteries of the universe and ended it basking in the tranquil beauty of a Masurian lake. It's amazing how much variety this region offers, and I'm so grateful to be sharing these experiences with my family.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Karczma Nad Łyną in Olsztyn. I decided to try the sour rye soup, a local favourite, and Jan opted for the Polish breakfast with fried white sausages. Aoife, ever the adventurous one, chose the savory omelet with cheese, ham, and mushrooms. Fuelled up, we set off for the Obserwatorium Astronomiczne, eager to explore the cosmos.

The Obserwatorium Astronomiczne was an experience that transported us far beyond the familiar landscapes of Masuria. As a librarian with a keen interest in history, I found myself captivated by the observatory's mission to unravel the mysteries of the universe. The sheer scale of the cosmos is humbling, and it's inspiring to see scientists dedicating their lives to understanding it.
Jan, with his background as a history teacher, was particularly fascinated by the historical instruments and the stories behind the astronomers who had used them. Aoife, always eager to learn, peppered the guide with questions about black holes and distant galaxies. I must admit, even I learned a thing or two! The main telescope, housed in its massive dome, was a sight to behold. It’s incredible to think of the light that has traveled millions of years to reach us, and the dedication required to capture and interpret it.
The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you.
After our cosmic journey, we decided to unwind at Plaża przy księżycowym dworku (Moonlight Manor Beach).

The name itself conjured images of tranquility, and the reality didn't disappoint. The beach was a lovely spot by Lake Siercze, offering a perfect contrast to the morning's intellectual pursuits. The area was clean and well-maintained, thanks to the local Kętrzyn Morsi (polar bear club) who take care of it.
Aoife was immediately drawn to the water, despite the slightly chilly weather. She's always been a water baby, much like myself growing up in Westport. Jan and I found a comfortable spot on the sand, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. The lake was serene, with only the gentle lapping of waves against the shore to break the silence. It was the perfect place to relax and reflect on the morning's adventures.
For lunch, we headed to Restauracja Pod Kogutem.

We sampled some traditional Polish dishes. Jan chose the pork knuckle, a hearty, classic dish, while Aoife went for pierogi filled with cheese and potatoes. I opted for something lighter, a fresh salad with local vegetables. The portions were generous, and the food was delicious. We were all very satisfied with our meals.
In the late afternoon, we stopped by Copia, a local shop, to pick up a few souvenirs.

I found a beautiful, hand-painted wooden box, perfect for storing my travel mementos. Aoife chose a set of Polish folk dolls, and Jan bought a book on the history of Olsztyn. It's always nice to have something to remind us of our travels.
As evening approached, we made our way to Restauracja Warmia Olsztyn for dinner.

The restaurant is known for its elegant setting and traditional Warmian cuisine. We started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by a main course of roasted duck with apples and cranberries. The food was exquisite, and the service was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end a wonderful day.
Reflecting on the day, I realize how much I appreciate the variety of experiences the Masurian Lake District has to offer. From the intellectual stimulation of the observatory to the serene beauty of the lake, there's something for everyone here. And sharing these moments with Jan and Aoife makes it all the more special. I am slightly worried that I forgot to pack extra power banks, especially with all the photos we've been taking, and I wish I had a waterproof map for our hikes, but we'll manage.
Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Amusement Park Active BARTBO for some family fun, followed by a visit to Kompania Mazurska Sp. z o.o. to learn more about the region's history and culture. In the evening, we might check out the 3 Arrows Irish Pub Szczytno for a taste of home. It's been a while since I've heard some traditional Irish music, and I'm sure Jan and Aoife would enjoy it too.
As I sit here, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore Poland with my family. It's a chance to reconnect with nature, learn about different cultures, and create lasting memories. And as we approach the end of our trip, I'm already looking forward to our next adventure.

Before I turn in for the night, I must say that I am looking forward to our final day in the Masurian Lake District.
