Spiritual Heights and Lively Nights

Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of serene temple visits and the lively atmosphere that Chiang Mai offers as the sun sets. It's remarkable how this city manages to hold both the sacred and the spirited within its embrace. Eleanor and Kenji were, as always, game for anything, and I was excited to share another day of exploration with them.

Our morning started with a hearty breakfast at The Good View Bar & Restaurant Chiang Mai. While the name suggests a focus on the evening scene, their breakfast spread was impressive, with a wide array of options that catered to both Western and Asian tastes. Kenji, of course, made a beeline for the pancakes, while Eleanor and I enjoyed some traditional Thai breakfast dishes. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering a pleasant view of the Ping River as we planned our day.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we set off to Wat Pha Lat. The temple was recommended to me as a 'hidden gem' nestled in the mountains, and I must say, it lived up to its reputation. The hike up to the temple was invigorating, a gentle climb through lush greenery. I was grateful for the comfortable walking shoes I had packed; remembering the universal adapter I'd forgotten back in Bristol now seemed a minor inconvenience compared to the potential discomfort of ill-suited footwear.

The journey to Wat Pha Lat was as enriching as the destination itself, a reminder that sometimes the most profound experiences are found off the beaten path.

As we ascended, the air grew cooler, and the sounds of the city faded away, replaced by the gentle rustling of leaves and the chirping of birds. Kenji, ever the curious one, peppered us with questions about the trees, the birds, and everything else he could spot. It's moments like these that make traveling with family so special. Reaching Wat Pha Lat felt like entering another world. The temple complex was serene, with intricate carvings and statues that seemed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings. The Burmese influence on the architecture was evident, a testament to the region's rich history and cultural exchange.

We spent a good couple of hours exploring the temple grounds, taking in the peaceful atmosphere and the stunning views of Chiang Mai below. I found a quiet spot to sit and meditate, the sounds of the nearby waterfall providing a soothing backdrop. It was a moment of true tranquility, a chance to disconnect from the digital world and connect with something deeper.

After our visit to Wat Pha Lat, we made our way back down the mountain, our minds and bodies refreshed. For lunch, we decided to try Tikky Cafe, a place recommended for its delicious Thai food and charming atmosphere. The cafe was indeed a delight, with an open-air setting surrounded by lush greenery. The menu was extensive, with a wide variety of Thai dishes to choose from. Eleanor and I opted for the classic Pad Thai, while Kenji, surprisingly, chose a green curry. The food was flavorful and beautifully presented, and the prices were very reasonable.

In the late afternoon, we visited Wat Lok Moli. This temple, unlike Wat Pha Lat, is located closer to the city center, but it was no less impressive. Wat Lok Moli has a rich history, dating back to the 14th century when it served as a residence for Burmese monks. The temple's chedi, built in the 1520s, is a massive structure that stands out for its plainness, a stark contrast to the ornate decorations of other chedis in the area. The viharn, rebuilt in the early 21st century, is a beautiful example of Lanna-style architecture, with gilded decorations and intricate wooden carvings.

As we explored Wat Lok Moli, I couldn't help but reflect on the impermanent nature of things. The temple has witnessed centuries of history, the rise and fall of dynasties, and the constant ebb and flow of human life. It was a humbling reminder of our place in the grand scheme of things.

As evening approached, we decided to embrace Chiang Mai's vibrant nightlife. After a short rest at Hotel M Chiang Mai, we ventured out to the Crazy German Bar. I'd heard mixed reviews, but I was curious to experience it for myself. The bar was lively, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying drinks and conversation. While it wasn't exactly my cup of tea (I prefer a quieter atmosphere), it was interesting to see another side of Chiang Mai. Kenji was fascinated by the lively atmosphere, although Eleanor and I ensured the environment remained appropriate for his age.

For dinner, we chose The Service at 1921 House, located in the Anantara Hotel. The restaurant is set in a colonial house that once served as the British Consulate, and the theme is based on a fictitious British government secret intelligence service. The atmosphere was intriguing, with dark, dramatic interiors and subtle twists and turns that transported us back to the Roaring 20s. The menu was a blend of contemporary Thai, Chinese Sichuan, and Vietnamese dishes, and the food was exquisite. I particularly enjoyed the butter chicken curry, while Eleanor raved about the spicy pork dumplings. Kenji, surprisingly adventurous, tried the chicken satay and declared it to be his favorite dish of the day.

The day was a whirlwind of experiences, a testament to the diversity and charm of Chiang Mai. From the serene heights of Wat Pha Lat to the lively atmosphere of the Crazy German Bar and the exquisite dining experience at The Service at 1921 House, it was a day that will stay with us for a long time.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this wonderful city with my family. Tomorrow is our last day in Chiang Mai, and we plan to make the most of it. Our itinerary includes a visit to the Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Centre and Wat Phantao, followed by some shopping at ChiangmaiCotton. I'm looking forward to immersing ourselves in the local culture and picking up some souvenirs to remind us of our time here.

“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta. As the sun sets on another day in Chiang Mai, I find myself reflecting on this quote, feeling grateful for the stories we've created and the memories we've made. This family cultural adventure in Chiang Mai has been nothing short of extraordinary.

I am particularly excited about the visit to Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Centre tomorrow. As someone who appreciates art and culture, I am looking forward to immersing myself in the local art scene and learning more about the history and traditions of the region. Eleanor is keen to explore Wat Phantao, known for its exquisite teak architecture, while Kenji is excited about the prospect of finding some unique souvenirs at ChiangmaiCotton.

As our trip draws to a close, I am already thinking about our next adventure. Perhaps we'll explore the tea houses of Kyoto, or maybe we'll venture into the Scottish Highlands. Whatever we decide, I know that we'll continue to seek out authentic experiences and off-the-beaten-path destinations, always with an open mind and a willingness to embrace the unknown. For now, though, I'm content to savor the memories we've created in Chiang Mai, a city that has captured our hearts and souls. Goodnight from Chiang Mai!

Before I turn in for the night, I must also mention that there are several events taking place in Chiang Mai this January, including the Flora Festival and the Borsang Umbrella and Sankhampaeng Craft Festival. While we didn't have the chance to attend these events, I would highly recommend them to anyone visiting Chiang Mai during this time. They offer a unique opportunity to experience the local culture and traditions.

I am also aware that the Nomad Summit, a gathering for digital nomads, is taking place in Chiang Mai, and the Jive Garden music festival. It's interesting to see how Chiang Mai attracts such a diverse range of people, from spiritual seekers to digital entrepreneurs to music lovers. It's a city that truly has something for everyone.
