Reaching New Heights & Culinary Delights

Today was a day of incredible physical challenges and equally rewarding culinary experiences. As we continue our Choquequirao trek, I'm constantly reminded of the resilience of the human spirit and the simple joys that make every hardship worthwhile. The stunning vistas from Abra Choquequirao were a testament to our efforts, and the tastes of Peru kept our spirits high.

Our day began, as usual, with the anticipation of what lay ahead. I had a bit of trouble sleeping, as I am not used to camping, but Maximilian assured me that I was doing great. Elena, on the other hand, slept like a rock. We fueled up for our trek at SUMAQCHA RESTAURANT with a hearty breakfast. The cozy atmosphere and friendly faces made it a perfect start to our day. I enjoyed a traditional Peruvian breakfast, while Maximilian opted for something a bit lighter. Elena enjoyed some pancakes, which she devoured in minutes. It's wonderful to see her embracing the local cuisine with such enthusiasm.

The trek to Abra Choquequirao was demanding, to say the least. The air was thin, and the path was steep, but the views kept us motivated. As we ascended, the landscape transformed around us, revealing panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains. I found myself stopping frequently, not just to catch my breath, but to capture the beauty with my camera. Maximilian was a great help, carrying extra water and encouraging Elena when she started to feel tired. It’s moments like these that make me so grateful for my family; their support makes every challenge feel surmountable. I must admit I forgot to pack sunscreen, and I am already regretting it.

Finally, we reached Abra Choquequirao. The sense of accomplishment was overwhelming. The view from the top was simply breathtaking – a sea of peaks stretching as far as the eye could see. We took some time to soak it all in, snapping photos and simply enjoying the moment. Elena was especially thrilled, proudly declaring that she had conquered the mountain. I must admit, I felt like crying. Cholula, my hometown, is beautiful, but it does not have views like this. I miss my family back home, but I am happy to share these views with my little family here. It was a moment of pure joy and connection, a memory I know we will all cherish forever. I am so proud of us.

“The best view comes after the hardest climb.”

After our descent, which was almost as challenging as the ascent, we were more than ready for a good meal. We headed to Hacienda Huayoccari for lunch. This restaurant is set in a beautiful colonial hacienda, surrounded by lush gardens. The setting itself was a feast for the eyes, with its impressive art collection and tranquil atmosphere. We were greeted warmly and offered Pisco Sours, which we gladly accepted. I felt instantly relaxed.

The food at Hacienda Huayoccari was exceptional. We started with causa, a traditional Peruvian dish made with mashed potatoes and filled with trout. It was light, refreshing, and bursting with flavor. For the main course, I ordered the trout with caper butter sauce, while Maximilian chose the sirloin steak with mushroom quinotto. Elena, of course, had the pasta. Every dish was prepared with care and showcased the fresh, local ingredients. The meal was not just food; it was an experience, a journey through the flavors of Peru.

As the day wound down, we found ourselves in Cusco, ready for dinner. We chose Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz. The vibrant décor and cozy atmosphere made it an inviting spot. The restaurant's name, meaning Happy Native, was inspired by the happy locals of Aguas Calientes. The menu was extensive, offering a mix of Peruvian and French cuisine. I opted for the French onion soup, followed by the pineapple chicken, while Maximilian chose a traditional Peruvian stew. Elena enjoyed some pasta. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to end a long and fulfilling day.

To cap off the evening, we decided to experience Cusco's nightlife at Inka Happiness Cultural Bar. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with music and dancing. I enjoyed a Pisco Sour, while Maximilian tried a local beer. Elena, of course, stuck to juice. The bar was adorned with Inca sculptures, adding to the cultural experience. It was a fun and festive way to unwind after our trek. I even tried my hand at salsa dancing, much to the amusement of Maximilian and Elena. I love to dance, it reminds me of home. I miss dancing salsa and bachata in Cholula.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we are excited to explore more of the Choquequirao Trek Peru. We'll start with breakfast at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant, followed by lunch at Chullos Restaurant & Craft Beer, and dinner at Yaku Restaurant. We also plan to visit the Handicraft Center Cusco to pick up some souvenirs. I am particularly looking forward to seeing the Choquequirao Trek itself, as that is what we came here for. I am also excited to shop for souvenirs. I want to bring something back home for my mom and my sisters.
