A Day of Discovery in Cape Breton

Today was all about immersing ourselves in the natural beauty and local culture of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. From the tranquil bogs to the stunning coastal views, and the delightful local cuisine, it was a day filled with unforgettable experiences. It felt like stepping into a painting, with every corner revealing a new, breathtaking vista.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Woodroad Restaurant: A Cape Breton Dining Experience. I had read rave reviews about it, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The cozy atmosphere and delicious food set the perfect tone for our adventures. It was a bit of a drive, but Pieter always says I have a knack for finding the most out-of-the-way places with the best food, so the family trusts my choices by now.

After breakfast, we set off to explore the Bog Trail. The trailhead was easy to find on the Cabot Trail at the top of French Mountain. This short, wheelchair-accessible loop trail is a gem. Alessia was particularly excited because the entire trail is a flat boardwalk, perfect for her little legs. As we strolled along, interpretive panels provided fascinating insights into the unique ecosystem of the highland plateau wetland. We spotted pitcher plants, delicate orchids, and colorful dragonflies. I tried to explain to Alessia how the pitcher plant eats insects, but I think it went a bit over her head. Pieter, ever the patient one, chimed in with a simplified explanation that seemed to do the trick.

The boardwalk kept our feet dry and protected the fragile bog life. It's wonderful to see Parks Canada's commitment to preserving the natural environment. The crisp air and the quiet beauty of the bog were incredibly refreshing. The whole family enjoyed the easy walk and the chance to connect with nature. We even learned about the gigantic moose that sometimes frequent the area, though we weren't lucky enough to spot one today. I made a mental note to bring binoculars next time; I had forgotten them in our rush to leave Haarlem. As we walked, I couldn't help but think how different this landscape is from the canals and tulip fields of the Netherlands. It’s these contrasts that make traveling so enriching.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.

Next on our itinerary was the Pathend Brook Lookout. Getting there involved a scenic drive along the Cabot Trail, heading towards Wreck Cove. The lookout is located just off the main highway and is easily accessible. As we approached, the views started to open up, revealing the stunning landscapes of Wreck Cove.

The lookout itself offered breathtaking vistas of lush greenery, rolling hills, and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean. It was a perfect spot for quiet contemplation and photography. I spent a good while trying to capture the panoramic views, while Pieter helped Alessia spot different bird species. The fresh air and the stunning scenery made it easy to forget about the hustle and bustle of daily life. I imagined bringing my parents here; they would love the tranquility and the natural beauty. I made a mental note to plan a trip with them next year.

After soaking in the views at Pathend Brook Lookout, we drove to Chéticamp for lunch at the Harbour Restaurant and Bar. This family-run establishment is known for its seafood and Acadian cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists. We ordered a variety of dishes, including the crab salads and French onion soup, and everything was delicious. Alessia, of course, opted for the apple pie. The service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was a great place to relax and refuel after our morning adventures. Pieter and I enjoyed a glass of local wine while Alessia told us all about the birds she had spotted at the lookout.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to do some shopping at the Cardinal Points Gift Shop in Pleasant Bay. This charming shop is a treasure trove of local crafts and souvenirs. As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The shop was filled with unique items, from handcrafted jewelry to beautiful home decor. I found a lovely hand-painted mug depicting a playful puffin, which I knew would be a perfect addition to my collection. Alessia picked out a cozy scarf spun from island wool. Pieter, always practical, chose a travel guidebook for our future adventures. The staff were incredibly friendly and shared stories about the artisans behind the products. It was more than just a shopping trip; it was an opportunity to connect with the local culture and support the community.

Before heading back to our cabin, we made a final stop for dinner at the Lobster Galley. This restaurant is renowned for its lobster dishes and waterfront dining experience. The location was perfect, offering stunning views of St. Ann's Bay. We decided to dine on the deck to take full advantage of the scenery. I ordered the lobster dinner, while Pieter opted for the fish and chips. Alessia, predictably, chose the chicken nuggets from the children's menu. The food was delicious, and the views were breathtaking. As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the bay, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. This was exactly the kind of family adventure I had been hoping for.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Corney Brook Trail. I’ve heard it’s another beautiful hike with stunning views, and I’m eager to see what it has to offer. We'll also be looking for a cozy spot to enjoy some traditional Irish music at The Old Triangle Irish Alehouse.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences we had today. Cape Breton Highlands National Park has truly captured my heart. The natural beauty, the friendly people, and the delicious food have all combined to create a truly unforgettable experience. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, and to sharing them with all of you.

The memories we’re making here are the kind I know we’ll cherish for years to come. It reminds me of something my grandmother used to say back in Matera: *La vita è un viaggio e chi viaggia vive due volte* – Life is a journey, and those who travel live twice. And today, I certainly felt like I was living life to the fullest.
