Stepping Back in Time in Kyoto
Today was nothing short of magical. Kyoto, with its serene temples and bustling streets, truly feels like stepping into a living postcard. The blend of history, culture, and culinary delights made for an unforgettable day, shared with great friends. From the moment we set out this morning, I knew we were in for something special.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Yasakadori Enraku. The restaurant was in a traditional-style house, and we enjoyed Kyoto cuisine in a beautiful tatami room. Yasakadori Enraku serves a variety of Japanese foods. I decided on a hearty portion of grilled fish with miso soup and rice – the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

With appetites sated, we made our way to Kiyomizu-dera. The approach to the temple was already captivating, with quaint shops lining the path, selling everything from traditional sweets to intricate crafts. As we climbed higher, the panoramic views of Kyoto began to unfold, teasing the breathtaking vista that awaited us at the top.

Finally, we arrived at Kiyomizu-dera, a temple that stands as a testament to Kyoto's rich history and spiritual heritage. Founded in 780 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto, its name literally means Pure Water Temple. The main hall, a National Treasure, and the wooden stage jutting out 13 meters above the hillside are architectural marvels. I learned that the stage and main hall were built without the use of nails! The view from the stage was simply stunning. The city stretched out before us, a tapestry of traditional rooftops and modern buildings, framed by the lush greenery of the surrounding hills. The temple was founded in 778 AD and contains buildings from the 17th century, including a main hall designated as a National Treasure.
I took a moment to appreciate the serene beauty of the surroundings. The sound of the Otowa Waterfall, divided into three separate streams, added to the tranquil atmosphere. Each stream is said to have a different benefit: longevity, success at school, and a fortunate love life. We decided against drinking from all three, not wanting to appear too greedy!
Exploring Kiyomizu-dera, I discovered the Jishu Shrine, dedicated to the deity of love and matchmaking. It was amusing to watch people attempting to walk between two stones with their eyes closed, hoping to find true love. I gave it a try myself, but perhaps my eyes weren't quite closed enough, as I veered off course and nearly bumped into a friendly tourist.
To walk through Kyoto is to walk through centuries of history, culture, and artistry.
Leaving Kiyomizu-dera, we descended into the charming streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka. These historic lanes, with their traditional wooden storefronts, tea houses, and craft shops, offered a glimpse into old Kyoto. The gentle, narrow sloping roads, paved with flagstones and stone steps, were a delight to wander through. I enjoyed the experience of what Kyoto looked like in the past.

Experience Ninenzaka's historical charm with traditional wooden structures, vibrant shops, and serene tea houses in the heart of Kyoto.
Nang, always the savvy shopper, found a beautiful silk scarf at one of the shops, while I was drawn to a small tea house. We sat on tatami mats, sipping matcha tea and savoring delicate sweets. The tea ceremony was a moment of quiet contemplation, a chance to appreciate the simple elegance of Japanese traditions. According to the legend, the one who slips and falls in one of these two streets will die in the next two to three years. Thankfully, we all managed to keep our footing!
By lunchtime, our appetites had returned, and we made our way to Katsukura - Kyoto Porta for a delightful tonkatsu meal. This restaurant is known for its exceptional Tonkatsu. Katsukura was founded in Sanjo, Kyoto. I opted for the pork fillet cutlet sandwich. The thick, firm pork fillet was so tender and not greasy at all. With rice, miso soup, and cabbage, it was the perfect lunch!

As evening approached, we prepared for our dinner at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO. The restaurant is housed in a Japanese house that used to be the private residence of Takeuchi Seiho, a painter. The ambiance was elegant, with a blend of modern design and traditional Japanese influences. We enjoyed creative Italian cuisine that combined the best of the times with a sense of the season. The anniversary dinner included carpaccio of tuna from Nagasaki Prefecture served with orange and South Sicilian Trapani sauce. The exquisite Italian cuisine served in a refined space made for an unforgettable experience.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to The Common One Bar Kyoto. Finding the entrance was a bit of an adventure, adding to the bar's allure. The bar features tatami rooms and a tea room, blending tradition and modernity. I decided on a brandy-based cocktail, which was expertly crafted and tasted fantastic. The attentive bartenders and creative snacks made it a special experience. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and cultural immersion.

Reflecting on the day, I am reminded of how fortunate I am to share these experiences with friends. Each moment, from the serene temples to the bustling streets, has added another layer to my understanding and appreciation of Kyoto. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures—a visit to Nijō Castle, the Kyoto International Manga Museum, and Nishiki Market—I carry with me the memories of today, a reminder of the beauty and wonder that await around every corner in this enchanting city.
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Nijō Castle, the Kyoto International Manga Museum, and Nishiki Market. I'm particularly excited about Nishiki Market, as I've heard it's a fantastic place to sample local delicacies and experience the vibrant food culture of Kyoto. I'm also looking forward to seeing the manga museum, as I've always been interested in Japanese comics and animation.
Until tomorrow, sayōnara! I can't wait to share more of my Kyoto adventures with you all. I think I will try to remember to pack sunscreen tomorrow, as I forgot it today. Nang reminded me that I need to remember my Japanese phrasebook as well.
