Exploring Kyoto: A Cultural Adventure with Friends
Day 2: A Day of Bamboo and Zen: Discovering the Tranquility of Arashiyama
Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Arashiyama, from its towering bamboo forest to the peaceful temples and delectable cuisine.
Finding Peace in Arashiyama
Today, Nang and I, along with our friends, embarked on a journey to Arashiyama, a district on the western outskirts of Kyoto known for its natural beauty and historical significance. After the hustle and bustle of arriving in Kyoto, I was eager to experience a different side of Japan, one that promised tranquility and a deeper connection to nature. And, of course, sample the local cuisine.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Jiki Miyazawa. Nestled in a quiet corner, this restaurant offered a traditional Japanese breakfast that was both nourishing and delightful. The delicate flavors of the miso soup, the perfectly cooked rice, and the assortment of pickled vegetables were a gentle awakening for the senses. It reminded me of the simple yet profound breakfasts Nang prepares at home, a comforting start to any day.

With our stomachs full and spirits high, we made our way to Arashiyama. The train ride itself was an experience, offering glimpses of the Japanese countryside, a patchwork of rice paddies and quaint villages. Arriving in Arashiyama, the air felt fresher, the pace slower. The towering mountains in the distance framed the landscape, creating a sense of awe and serenity.
Our first stop was Tenryu-ji Temple, one of Kyoto's five great Zen temples and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded in 1339, the temple was built to honor Emperor Go-Daigo. As we walked through the temple grounds, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace wash over me. The manicured gardens, with their meticulously placed rocks and serene ponds, were a testament to the Japanese appreciation for nature and balance.

The garden of Tenryu-ji is a fine blend of aristocratic tradition and Zen culture.
The garden's design incorporates the surrounding landscape, a technique known as *shakkei*, blurring the lines between the natural world and human creation. I found myself lost in contemplation, admiring the harmony between the temple, the gardens, and the mountains beyond. It was a moment of quiet reflection, a chance to escape the noise of everyday life and connect with something deeper.
Leaving Tenryu-ji, we ventured into the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. This was perhaps the most anticipated part of our day, and it did not disappoint. As we stepped onto the path, we were immediately enveloped by towering bamboo stalks, their green culms reaching skyward. The sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, casting dappled shadows on the path below. The air was cool and still, the only sound the gentle rustling of the bamboo leaves in the breeze. It felt like stepping into another world, a sanctuary of natural beauty.

Walking through the bamboo forest, I felt a sense of wonder and awe. The sheer scale of the bamboo, the way it towered above us, was humbling. It was a reminder of the power and beauty of nature, a force that can both inspire and calm. Nang, ever the photographer, was in her element, capturing the play of light and shadow on the bamboo stalks. I, too, took my fair share of photos, wanting to preserve this magical moment.
For lunch, we chose Arash's Kitchen, an establishment offering a fusion of Iranian, Indian, Turkish, and Arabic cuisines. After days of Japanese food, we were craving something different, something with a bit more spice. Arash's Kitchen did not disappoint. The kebabs were flavorful and tender, the curries rich and aromatic. It was a taste of home away from home, a reminder of the diverse culinary landscape of Montreal. It was a pleasant surprise to find such a diverse menu in the heart of Arashiyama, a testament to Kyoto's cosmopolitan nature.

The owner, a Frenchman named Chris, has created a truly special place, a blend of French charm and Japanese hospitality. The cocktails were inventive and delicious, each one a work of art. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, a place to relax and unwind after a day of exploring.
