A Warm Thai Welcome to Khao Sok

After a long journey from Berlin, Greta, Lila, and I have finally arrived in Khao Sok National Park! Leaving behind the familiar cityscape, we were immediately enveloped by the humid embrace of the Thai rainforest. The air is thick with the scent of damp earth and exotic blossoms, a stark contrast to the crisp Berlin air I'm used to. I'm eager to share all of our adventures with you, my readers, as we delve into this beautiful part of my home country.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Rafflesia Cafe. This charming riverside spot, recommended by several readers, was the perfect place to fuel up for the day's adventures. I ordered a traditional Thai breakfast, while Greta opted for something a little more familiar, and Lila, of course, had pancakes. The coffee was strong, just how I like it, and the atmosphere was incredibly relaxing, with the gentle sounds of the Sok River providing a soothing backdrop.

With our bellies full, we made our way to the Khao Sok National Park HQ. The park headquarters was buzzing with activity. After paying the entrance fees, we took a moment to gather our bearings and consult the map. The park sprawls over a vast area, encompassing dense jungle, towering limestone cliffs, and the serene Cheow Lan Lake. We decided to start with a trek along one of the shorter trails, hoping to spot some of the park's famous wildlife.

The trail was an experience in itself. Towering trees formed a canopy overhead, filtering the sunlight and casting dappled shadows on the path. The air was alive with the sounds of the jungle – the calls of exotic birds, the rustling of leaves, and the occasional screech of a monkey. Lila was particularly excited, her eyes wide with wonder as she scanned the surroundings for any signs of animal life. I tried to capture the beauty of the moment with my camera, but no photograph could truly do justice to the sheer vibrancy and energy of the rainforest.

Nature's beauty is a symphony of sights, sounds, and scents, best experienced with loved ones.

After a couple of hours of trekking, we worked up quite an appetite. We headed to Nongsaw Thai Food for lunch, another recommendation I had received. This small, unassuming restaurant served up some of the most delicious Thai food I've ever tasted. Greta and I shared a green curry, while Lila devoured a plate of mango sticky rice. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of sweet, spicy, and savory. It reminded me of my childhood, growing up in Lampang, where my grandmother would cook similar dishes with ingredients fresh from her garden.

With our stomachs satisfied, it was time for the highlight of our day: a visit to the Khao Sok Elephant Sanctuary. I had carefully researched different sanctuaries, wanting to ensure that we chose one that prioritized the well-being of the elephants. This particular sanctuary is known for its ethical treatment of these gentle giants, focusing on rescue and rehabilitation rather than riding or performing tricks.

As we approached the sanctuary, we could hear the trumpeting of elephants in the distance. Lila was beside herself with excitement, and even Greta, who is usually a bit reserved, couldn't help but smile. We were greeted by the sanctuary staff, who gave us a brief introduction to the elephants and the sanctuary's mission. We learned about the history of elephant tourism in Thailand and the importance of supporting ethical sanctuaries that provide a safe and natural environment for these animals.

We spent the afternoon feeding the elephants, preparing their food, and even helping to bathe them in a nearby lagoon. It was an incredible experience to be so close to these magnificent creatures, to feel their rough skin and see the intelligence in their eyes. Wassana, one of the elephants, was particularly gentle and seemed to enjoy Lila's attention. It was heartwarming to see the connection between them.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Khao Sok village, feeling tired but incredibly fulfilled. We stopped at the Everything shop to grab a few essentials, including a portable phone charger, as I realized I had forgotten mine! We ended our day with dinner at Wind Song Bar & Restaurant. The atmosphere was lively, and the food was delicious, a mix of Thai and international cuisine. Greta and I enjoyed some cocktails while Lila happily munched on some spring rolls. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we are planning to visit Cheow Lan Lake and the Khao Sok Floating Bungalows. I've heard so much about the beauty of the lake, and I can't wait to experience it firsthand. We'll have breakfast at Bamboo Bistro Khaosok before heading out for a day of exploring the lake and its surroundings. Lunch will be at the Floating restaurant and activities, and dinner at Khao Sok Rasta Thailand. I am also hoping to enjoy a drink at Bamboo Bistro khaosok bar.

Even though September is considered part of the rainy season, today the weather was quite pleasant. There was sunshine for a good portion of the day. I am hoping the weather will be as nice tomorrow, but I have packed our rain jackets, just in case!

This first day in Khao Sok has been an incredible experience for all of us. It's a place where you can truly connect with nature, learn about different cultures, and create lasting memories with your family. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to share this journey with you, my readers, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to get some sleep. The jungle air is calling my name, and I have a feeling I'm going to sleep very well tonight.
