Adventures in Khao Sok: Caves and National Parks

Today was all about embracing the wild heart of Khao Sok. We ventured deep into caves, explored the lush landscapes of Khlong Phanom National Park, and savored the local flavors that make this region so unique. It was a day filled with exploration, a few unexpected turns, and plenty of family bonding.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Little Wild Cafe Khao Sok. This charming spot, just a stone's throw from the national park entrance, was the perfect place to fuel up for our adventures. Lila was particularly excited about her pancakes, while Greta and I enjoyed some strong, locally sourced coffee. It's amazing how a good cup of coffee can set the tone for the entire day, especially when you know you're about to embark on a journey into the unknown.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to Nam Ta Lu Cave. The journey there was an adventure in itself. We hopped on a longtail boat that took us across the serene Cheow Lan Lake, surrounded by towering limestone cliffs. The view was simply breathtaking, like a scene from a movie. Lila, of course, was thrilled by the boat ride, her eyes wide with wonder as we sped across the water.

The hike to the cave entrance was about an hour long, trekking through dense jungle. The humidity was intense, and I quickly realized I'd forgotten to pack my portable phone charger – a rookie mistake! Luckily, Greta had remembered hers, so I wasn't completely off the grid. The path was uneven, and at times, quite challenging, but the anticipation of exploring the cave kept us going. I have to admit, I was a bit nervous about the cave, especially after reading about the potential for flash floods during the rainy season. But our guide assured us that it was safe, and I trusted his expertise.

Entering Nam Ta Lu Cave felt like stepping into another world. The darkness was almost immediate, and we switched on our headlamps to navigate the rocky terrain. The cave was filled with stunning stalactites and stalagmites, illuminated by our lights, creating an eerie yet beautiful spectacle. In some parts, we had to wade through knee-deep water, which added an element of thrill to the experience. Lila, surprisingly, was fearless, splashing through the water with glee.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

The cave stretched for about 700 meters, and it took us a good couple of hours to traverse its entirety. There were narrow passages where we had to squeeze through, and larger chambers where we could stand and admire the cave's formations. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder at the natural beauty that surrounded us. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel and explore new places.

Emerging from the cave, we were greeted by the bright sunlight and the lush greenery of the jungle. We took a moment to catch our breath and reflect on the incredible experience we had just shared. Lila was already asking when we could go back!

Next on our itinerary was Khlong Phanom National Park. This park, often overshadowed by its famous neighbor, Khao Sok, is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. We decided to explore it, hoping to find some less-trodden paths and a bit of solitude.

Khlong Phanom is known for its towering limestone cliffs and dense rainforests. We opted for a guided hike to see the giant bamboo, the largest species in Thailand. The trek was challenging, with steep climbs and uneven terrain, but the scenery was well worth the effort. The air was fresh and clean, and the sounds of the jungle were music to my ears. We even spotted some rare orchids and lianas clinging to the cliff faces.

Our guide shared stories about the park's history and its diverse ecosystem. He pointed out various plant species and explained their medicinal properties. It was fascinating to learn about the local flora and fauna and to gain a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

After our hike, we were famished. We stopped for lunch at the Bus stop restaurant, a quirky little place that, as the name suggests, is located near a bus stop. The food was simple but delicious, and the prices were very reasonable. We ordered some Pad Thai and green curry, and Lila, of course, had her favorite – mango sticky rice.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind at Jumanji Bar. This bar, known for its lively atmosphere and friendly staff, was the perfect place to relax and reflect on our adventures. I opted for a cold beer, while Greta enjoyed a mojito. Lila, of course, had a fruit shake. The bar had a cool reggae vibe, and the music was just right. It was a great way to end a perfect day.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we had dinner at Khaosok Rambo Restaurant. This restaurant is known for its authentic Thai dishes and its welcoming atmosphere. We ordered Tom Yum Goong and green curry, and they were both bursting with flavor. The portions were generous, and the prices were very affordable.

Back at our accommodation, we were all exhausted but happy. We had experienced so much in one day, and we had created memories that would last a lifetime. As I lay in bed, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to travel and explore the world with my family.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Khao Sok Viewpoint and Bang Hua Rat. I'm also looking forward to trying the Jasmine Garden Thai Restaurant and Cooking School for breakfast. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery.

And before I forget, I definitely need to buy a portable phone charger tomorrow. Lesson learned!

I am so glad that we decided to come to Khao Sok. It's a truly magical place, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. The blend of adventure and relaxation is just what our family needed, and I'm already looking forward to sharing more stories with you all.

The kids are already fast asleep, dreaming of caves and jungles. Greta is reading a book, and I'm here, typing away, trying to capture the essence of this incredible day. It's moments like these that make me realize how lucky I am to be able to do what I do. Sharing these experiences with you all is a privilege, and I hope that my stories inspire you to embark on your own adventures.

Goodnight from Khao Sok!

P.S. I almost forgot to mention that I saw a family of monkeys near the cave entrance today! Lila was thrilled, and it was definitely a highlight of the day. It's amazing how these little moments can make a trip so special. And I am sure that I will remember to pack my binoculars next time!

Now, it's time for me to get some sleep. Until tomorrow, happy travels!

P.P.S. Marta Krol mentioned on Google that Jumanji Bar can be too loud at night. Hopefully, we will sleep well tonight.
