Florence's Heavenly Heights

Today, on the second day of my Florentine solo adventure, I decided to fully immerse myself in the city's most iconic architectural wonders. It was a day of soaring heights, artistic marvels, and culinary delights, as I explored the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Giotto's Bell Tower, and the Baptistery of St. John. Each location offered a unique perspective on Florence's rich history and vibrant culture.

My day began with the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, also known as the Duomo. As I approached, the sheer scale of the cathedral was breathtaking. The intricate marble facade, a symphony of white, green, and pink, gleamed in the morning sun. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the craftsmanship and dedication that went into creating such a masterpiece. It reminded me of the elaborate temples back in Thailand, where every detail tells a story.

Entering the cathedral, I was immediately struck by the vastness of the interior. The soaring arches and stained-glass windows created an atmosphere of reverence and tranquility. Though I'm not particularly religious, I always find myself drawn to the sense of peace within these sacred spaces. I spent a good hour wandering through the cathedral, admiring the artwork and soaking in the ambiance.

The beauty of Florence lies not only in its artistic treasures but also in the way it invites you to lose yourself in its timeless charm.

Next on my list was Giotto's Bell Tower. The tower, standing tall beside the Duomo, beckoned me to climb its 414 steps for a panoramic view of Florence. I must admit, the climb was a bit challenging, especially after a hearty breakfast. I definitely forgot my umbrella, but thankfully it wasn't raining. But as I ascended, I was rewarded with increasingly stunning views of the city. From the top, Florence unfolded before me like a tapestry of terracotta rooftops, winding streets, and distant hills. It was a truly unforgettable sight.

After descending from Giotto's Bell Tower, I made my way to the Baptistery of St. John. This octagonal building, with its iconic bronze doors, is one of the oldest structures in Florence. As I stood before the Baptistery, I couldn't help but think of the countless people who had been baptized within its walls over the centuries. The history and significance of this place were palpable.

The interior of the Baptistery was equally impressive, adorned with intricate mosaics and marble panels. The highlight, of course, was the famous bronze doors, including the Gates of Paradise, which Michelangelo himself had praised. The artistry and detail of these doors were simply astounding. It's incredible to think that these masterpieces were created centuries ago, yet they still retain their beauty and power today.

For breakfast, I stopped at **Panini Toscani**, a delightful spot known for its authentic Tuscan sandwiches. The aroma of freshly baked bread and cured meats filled the air as I stepped inside. I decided on a classic *panino* with *prosciutto*, *pecorino*, and *salsa verde*. The ingredients were incredibly fresh and flavorful, and the *panino* was the perfect fuel for my morning explorations. I must say, it was as good as the *panini* Greta sometimes prepares for our picnics in Tiergarten.

Lunch was at Trattoria Sostanza, a traditional Florentine restaurant famous for its butter chicken. The *trattoria* was cozy and inviting, with rustic decor and a lively atmosphere. The butter chicken, or *petti di pollo al burro*, was indeed a revelation. The chicken was tender and juicy, with a rich, buttery flavor that was simply divine. It was a comforting and satisfying meal that warmed me from the inside out.

As evening approached, I headed to Il Santo Bevitore for dinner. This restaurant, known for its innovative cuisine and extensive wine list, was a perfect choice for a special evening. The ambiance was elegant and romantic, with soft lighting and exposed stone walls. I opted for the *pappardelle al ragu di cinghiale*, a hearty pasta dish with wild boar sauce. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the *ragu* was rich and flavorful. Of course, I had to pair my meal with a glass of Tuscan red wine, which complemented the dish perfectly.

After dinner, I decided to unwind at Bitter Bar, a trendy cocktail bar known for its creative concoctions. The bar had a cool and sophisticated vibe, with dim lighting and a stylish decor. I ordered a *Negroni*, a classic Italian cocktail, and savored the bitter-sweet flavors as I reflected on my day. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with art, history, and culinary delights.

As I walked back to Palazzo Graziani, the city was quiet and peaceful. The street lamps cast a warm glow on the cobblestone streets, and the air was crisp and cool. I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this beautiful city. Florence had truly captured my heart, and I knew that I would cherish these memories for years to come.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Galleria dell'Accademia to see David, the San Marco Museum, and the Basilica di San Lorenzo. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at Boutique Nadine. It promises to be another exciting day of exploration and discovery.

This solo trip is exactly what I needed. It's a chance to recharge, reflect, and reconnect with my passions. As an English teacher in Berlin, I often find myself caught up in the daily grind. This trip is a reminder that there's a whole world out there waiting to be explored. And who knows, maybe I'll even pick up some new Italian phrases to impress Greta and Lila when I get back.

Until tomorrow, *arrivederci*!
