Solo Sojourn in Gros Morne: A Journey into Nature
Day 2: Fjord Adventures and Fishing Tales: Day Two in Gros Morne
Discover the majestic beauty of Western Brook Pond and step back in time at Broom Point on day two of my Gros Morne adventure.
A Day of Fjords and Fishermen
Today was a day of immersing myself in the raw beauty and rich history of Gros Morne National Park. From gliding across a pristine fjord to stepping back in time in a traditional fishing village, every moment was a vivid sensory experience. I was looking forward to delving deeper into this captivating landscape, camera in hand, ready to capture the essence of Newfoundland's charm.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at the Sunset Cafe in Rocky Harbour. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the promise of a homemade meal were the perfect start to a day of exploration. I opted for a breakfast burrito, fueling up for the moderate 3km walk to Western Brook Pond.
The trail to Western Brook Pond was a pleasant stroll through bogs and forested ridges. The crisp morning air, filled with the scent of pine and damp earth, invigorated my senses. As I approached the dock, the view opened up to reveal the stunning Western Brook Pond, a freshwater fjord carved by glaciers thousands of years ago. The Long Range Mountains stood tall, their billion-year-old cliffs reflecting in the calm waters.

The boat tour was the highlight of the morning. As the catamaran glided through the fjord, I was mesmerized by the towering cliffs, some reaching as high as 2,000 feet. Waterfalls cascaded down the rock faces, turning into mist before reaching the pond below. The guide shared stories of the pond's geological history and the wildlife that calls it home. I kept my eyes peeled, hoping to spot some of the Atlantic salmon, brook trout, or arctic char that inhabit these waters.
To truly appreciate the beauty of nature, one must immerse oneself in its embrace.
After the boat tour, I grabbed a quick lunch at The Black Spruce Restaurant in Norris Point. This restaurant is known for its refined dining experience inspired by Newfoundland flavors. I savored a delicious seafood chowder, made with fresh cod and local ingredients. The Black Spruce is dedicated to the use and promotion of local and sustainably harvested food products and produce. Every table in the restaurant boasts a scenic view of the mountains and waters of Gros Morne Park.
With my appetite sated, I drove to Broom Point, a restored fishing premise that offers a glimpse into the lives of inshore fishing families of coastal Newfoundland. From 1941 to 1975, three Mudge brothers and their families called Broom Point their summer home. They fished the coastline, made fish, and canned lobster.

Walking around Broom Point, I could almost hear the echoes of the past. The restored cabin and fish store stood as a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of these families. I explored the grounds, imagining what life was like for the Mudges, who shared a single cabin with no water or electricity. The women and children made fish, canned lobster, and tended to gardens for their winter food.
I spoke with one of the interpreters, who shared stories of the Mudge family and the history of Broom Point. The name Broom Point is a corruption of the French Point Brun (Brown Point). The area has been a prime fishing location for over 2,300 years, attracting Paleo-Eskimos and European settlers alike.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to the Merchant Warehouse Retro Cafe & Wine Bar in Woody Point. This lively spot combines live entertainment with great pub & grub dining in a restored old warehouse that sits directly over the water. I settled in on the waterfront patio, enjoying a cold local beer and the stunning views of Bonne Bay. The Merchant Warehouse has the largest outdoor patio on the waterfront and is an ideal location to relax and enjoy with a spectacular backdrop of the majestic water.

For dinner, I indulged in their famous fish and chips, savoring the fresh seafood and the retro vibe of the cafe. The Merchant Warehouse is known for serving some of the best fish and chips in the area. The friendly staff and the collection of Coca-Cola souvenirs added to the charm.
Before heading back to camp, I stopped by Western Newfoundland Brewing Co. for a nightcap. Although they don't have a public brewhouse, I managed to find their beer on tap at a local restaurant. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring the natural and cultural wonders of Gros Morne.

Tomorrow, I plan to tackle the Tablelands Trail and, if I'm feeling ambitious, the Gros Morne Mountain Hiking Trail. I've heard the views are incredible, and I'm eager to experience these iconic landmarks firsthand. I'll be sure to pack plenty of water and snacks, and I'm hoping the weather cooperates. I might also swing by the Treasure Box shop, if time allows, to pick up a souvenir or two.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Gros Morne National Park. It's a place that truly captivates the senses and nourishes the soul. I am really enjoying this solo trip and I think I'll have to bring Greta and Lila here next time, they would love the scenery.
