Finding Peace and Spice in Kanazawa
Today was a day of contrasts, a harmonious blend of quiet contemplation and vibrant experiences. It's amazing how a single day can hold so much, leaving you feeling both refreshed and invigorated. The family and I set out to explore different facets of Kanazawa, seeking both inner peace and the exciting flavors the city has to offer.
Our morning began with a visit to the D.T. Suzuki Museum. Tucked away from the bustling city center, the museum is a serene oasis dedicated to the life and teachings of the renowned Buddhist philosopher, D.T. Suzuki. The architecture itself is a masterpiece of minimalist design, created by Yoshio Taniguchi, which enhances the surrounding greenery. The kids were surprisingly engaged, especially in the Contemplative Space, a room designed to encourage reflection. The Water Mirror Garden was particularly captivating, offering a panoramic view of the sky. It’s a place where you can truly lose yourself in thought.
The essence of Zen is seeing into the life of things.
The museum visit reminded me of my own journey. As a software developer who transitioned from a completely different life back in Salatiga, I often find myself contemplating the meaning of life and the importance of being present. It's a practice I try to instill in Bagus as well, encouraging him to find moments of stillness amidst the chaos of youth. Sri, ever the pragmatist, appreciated the museum's simplicity and the sense of calm it evoked, a welcome change from the demands of her nursing career. We all found something to appreciate in the museum's understated elegance.

Leaving the museum, we decided to immerse ourselves in the flavors of Kanazawa. For lunch, we headed to Spice Box, a Sri Lankan restaurant known for its authentic spices and flavorful dishes. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, filled with the aroma of exotic spices. I opted for the mutton devil, a dish recommended by other patrons, while Sri chose a milder coconut prawn curry. Bagus, ever adventurous, went for the kottu roti. Each dish was a burst of flavor, a testament to the skill of the Sri Lankan chefs. It was a delightful change from the traditional Japanese cuisine we had been enjoying, and it was fun to compare the spices and flavors to those we use in Indonesian cooking.

After our flavorful lunch, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Kanazawa Loft. This multi-story shop is a treasure trove of unique and quirky items, from stationery and home goods to electronics and beauty products. Bagus was immediately drawn to the gadgets and electronics, while Sri browsed the selection of traditional crafts and souvenirs. I found myself fascinated by the unique stationery and art supplies, a nod to my interest in photography and capturing memories. We each found something to take home, a little memento of our Kanazawa adventure.

For dinner, we decided to experience the renowned Kagaya Kanazawa, a restaurant known for its traditional Kaga cuisine. Located in the Kanazawa Station shopping mall, it was conveniently accessible. We opted for the Kagaya Gozen, a set meal featuring sashimi, fried foods, and rice with small fish, all made with fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan and in-season Kaga vegetables. The presentation was exquisite, each dish a work of art. The flavors were delicate and refined, a true reflection of the region's culinary heritage. It was a perfect end to a day of diverse experiences, a celebration of Kanazawa's rich culture and culinary traditions.

Earlier in the day, I had also considered joining one of the Kanazawa Tours, but the family preferred exploring at our own pace. However, I've heard great things about them, especially for those who want a deeper dive into the city's history and culture. Perhaps on a future visit, I'll take the opportunity to join one of their artisan meetings or a private tea ceremony.

As I reflect on today, I'm struck by the beauty of balance. The quiet contemplation at the D.T. Suzuki Museum, the vibrant flavors of Spice Box, the quirky finds at Kanazawa Loft, and the refined elegance of Kagaya Kanazawa – each experience complemented the others, creating a harmonious whole. It's a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new perspectives and finding beauty in the unexpected. Tomorrow, we plan to visit Kasumiga-ike Pond and Tentokuin, hoping to discover more hidden gems in this beautiful city. I'm also hoping to find some sunscreen, as I realized I forgot to pack it! It’s a small oversight, but a reminder that even the most well-planned trips can have their little surprises. And maybe we can stop by Kanazawa Katani to pick up some local crafts.
Kanazawa continues to surprise and delight us. It's a city that offers something for everyone, a perfect blend of tradition and modernity, peace and excitement. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
