Celestial Musings and Ancient Echoes in Cusco

Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Cusco, both literally and figuratively. From exploring the vastness of the cosmos at the Cusco Planetarium to tracing the intricate history etched in the stones of the Historical Center and the famed Twelve Angled Stone, it was a journey through time and space that left me in awe. It's days like these that remind me why I set out on this solo adventure in the first place – to connect with cultures, histories, and the universe in ways I never thought possible.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at El Mesón de Don Tomas. I opted for something simple but satisfying – some scrambled eggs and local bread. Fuelled up, I set off for the Cusco Planetarium. The Planetarium is nestled in the hills just a short drive from the city center. The drive itself was an experience, winding through narrow streets and offering glimpses of local life. Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the unique setting. Far from the sterile environment I was expecting, this planetarium felt more like a cozy Andean home, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape near Saqsayhuaman and the Llaullipata ecological reserve.

The family-run planetarium exuded warmth, and the guides were incredibly passionate about sharing their knowledge. We gathered in a humble adobe home where the mysteries of the universe were unraveled through the lens of Inca astronomy. I learned how the Incas, without the aid of modern technology, meticulously observed the stars and incorporated their knowledge into their daily lives, agriculture, and spiritual beliefs. The presentation about Incan astronomy was very informative and interesting. What struck me most was how deeply connected the Incas were to the cosmos, viewing the night sky as an integral part of their world. They saw constellations not just as patterns of stars, but as representations of their deities and mythical figures. It was a fascinating glimpse into a worldview so different from my own, reminding me of the importance of perspective.

The universe is not outside of you. Look inside yourself; everything that you want, you already are.

Even though it was a bit cloudy, the guides more than made up for it with their engaging stories and explanations. I even got a chance to peek through their telescopes and, despite the cloud cover, caught a fleeting glimpse of the moon. It was a reminder that even when things aren't perfectly clear, there's always something beautiful to be found if you look closely enough. It made me think of Sri and Bagus back home, and I wished they could have been there to share in the experience. Bagus, with his keen interest in science, would have been especially fascinated.

From the Planetarium, I headed to the Cusco Historical Center. As I wandered through the Plaza de Armas, I felt the echoes of history reverberating all around me. The architecture is a stunning blend of Incan foundations and Spanish colonial facades, a visual representation of the city's complex past. The square was bustling with activity – locals going about their day, tourists snapping photos, and street vendors selling their wares. It was a vibrant scene, full of life and energy.

I took my time exploring the narrow cobblestone streets, popping into shops and admiring the architecture. I made a stop at Cusco Collection. I ended up buying a beautifully woven scarf as a gift for Sri. I know she’ll appreciate the craftsmanship and the vibrant colors. I was drawn to the intricate details and the obvious care that went into creating it. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I was glad to find a piece that was both beautiful and meaningful.

Lunch was at Andean Grill Restaurant. I decided to try a traditional Cusquenian dish called Chiriuchu. It was a unique combination of flavors and textures, a mix of meats, vegetables, and spices that was both intriguing and delicious. It was a reminder that food is such an integral part of culture, a way to connect with the history and traditions of a place.

After lunch, I made my way to the famed Twelve Angled Stone. Tucked away on Calle Hatunrumiyoc, the stone is part of an ancient Inca wall that now forms part of the Archbishop's Palace. Despite the crowds of tourists gathered around it, I couldn't help but be impressed by the precision and skill of the Inca stonemasons. The stone fits perfectly into the surrounding wall, with each of its twelve angles interlocking seamlessly with the adjacent stones. It's a testament to the ingenuity and engineering prowess of the Inca civilization.

The Twelve Angled Stone, also known as “Piedra de los Doce Ángulos” in Spanish, is a remarkable archeological artifact situated in Cusco, Peru. This stone holds deep historical and cultural significance as it is considered a national heritage object and serves as a prominent symbol of Inca architecture. Precisely crafted by the skilled artisans of the Inca civilization. The Twelve-Angled Stone is composed of diorite rocks and stands out for its fine finishing and distinctive twelve-angled border. Its precise fit with the surrounding blocks attests to the Incas' mastery of construction techniques. While its exact origins remain uncertain, it is believed that the Twelve-Angled Stone was built during the reign of Inca Roca, who ruled over the Inca Empire in the 15th century. This stone served functional and symbolic purposes within the palace walls. Functionally it played a vital role in maintaining stability and resilience within the structure. Symbolically it represented the authority and power of the Inca Empire by showcasing their exceptional construction skills and profound understanding of geometry.

As I stood there, gazing at the stone, I couldn't help but wonder about the people who had built this wall so many centuries ago. What were their lives like? What were their hopes and dreams? It's humbling to realize that we are all part of a long and continuous story, each generation building upon the legacy of those who came before us.

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Limo, a restaurant known for its Peruvian-Japanese fusion cuisine and its stunning views of the Plaza de Armas. I started with a classic Pisco Sour. I then opted for the grilled trout with local herbs. The flavors were exquisite, a perfect blend of Peruvian and Japanese influences.

As I savored my meal and gazed out at the illuminated Plaza de Armas, I reflected on the day's experiences. From the cosmic wonders of the Planetarium to the ancient echoes of the Historical Center and the Twelve Angled Stone, it had been a day of discovery and connection. I felt grateful for the opportunity to explore this fascinating city and to learn about its rich history and culture.

I am looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to delve even deeper into Cusco's cultural heritage with visits to the Inka Museum, the Regional Historical Museum of Cusco, and the Coca Museum. I also plan to unwind with a craft beer at Cholos Craft Beers Cusco. I am also planning to try Mama Seledonia for lunch and Fusion Andina for dinner. It’s these small moments of relaxation, like enjoying a local brew, that often lead to the most memorable experiences.

Before heading back to Hotel Polo Corporativo, I took one last stroll through the Plaza de Armas. The city was quieter now, the crowds had thinned, and the air was filled with a sense of peace and tranquility. As I walked, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to explore new places, to learn new things, and to connect with the world in a meaningful way. And as I prepare for another day of exploration, I know that Cusco still has many more wonders to reveal.

I am also glad that I didn't forget any of my trip essentials, as I had my camera, travel journal, comfortable hiking shoes, and portable charger. However, I wish I had brought my sunglasses and Spanish phrasebook, as I could have used them today. I will make sure to pack them tomorrow.

Tomorrow, I’m planning to visit the Inka Museum, the Regional Historical Museum of Cusco, and the Coca Museum, hoping to learn even more about the rich history and culture of this region. Perhaps I’ll even pick up that Spanish phrasebook I forgot!
