Solo Exploration of Ras Muhammad National Park
Day 7: A Day of Geological Wonders and Bedouin Legends in Ras Muhammad
Exploring the geological wonders of Ras Muhammad National Park, from the Magic Lake to the Earthquake Crack, and local Beduin culture.
Whispers of the Desert
Today was a day of stark contrasts, from the shimmering waters of a mythical lake to the fractured earth of a seismic event. Ras Muhammad National Park continued to reveal its secrets, each location whispering tales of geological forces and ancient legends. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the familiar comforts of Heidelberg for the unpredictable beauty of the open road.
My day began, as it has for the past week, with breakfast at Osprey Ras Mohamed. The routine is comforting: strong coffee, a simple meal, and the vast expanse of the Red Sea stretching out before me. It’s a far cry from my usual mornings in Heidelberg, where the view is cobblestone streets and the spire of the Heiliggeistkirche. I find myself appreciating the quiet solitude, a chance to gather my thoughts before venturing out into the park’s wonders. After a hearty meal, I set off to explore Il Lago Magico, or the Magic Lake.

The drive to the lake was an experience in itself. The stark desert landscape, with its muted colors and endless horizons, always reminds me of the vastness of time and history. It’s a feeling I often get in my antique shop, surrounded by objects that have witnessed generations come and go. Reaching Il Lago Magico, I was immediately struck by its serene beauty. The water was an incredible shade of turquoise, almost surreal against the backdrop of the surrounding desert. The air was still and quiet, adding to the lake's mystical aura. According to local Bedouin legends, the lake possesses magical properties, with some believing its waters can even cure infertility. While I remain skeptical, there's no denying the sense of wonder the place inspires.
Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are not found in textbooks, but in the whispers of the wind and the stories etched into the land.
I spent a good hour simply walking around the lake, taking in the views and reflecting on the stories I’d heard. The Magic Lake is separated from the Red Sea by a thin strip of land, its unique geological formation creating an isolated and highly saline environment. It's this isolation that contributes to its unique ecosystem and, perhaps, to the legends that surround it. I couldn't resist dipping my fingers into the water, feeling the unusual saltiness. It was a small gesture, but it connected me to the place in a way that simply observing could not. Afterwards, I made my way to Crepa Sismica, the Earthquake Crack.

The Earthquake Crack is a stark reminder of the powerful geological forces that have shaped this region. Formed by an earthquake, the crack is a deep fissure in the earth, a dramatic scar across the landscape. As I approached the site, the air felt different, charged with a sense of raw energy. Climbing down into the crack, I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of it. The walls towered above me, the layers of rock telling a story of millennia of geological activity.
The sun beat down mercilessly, but the depths of the crack offered a welcome respite from the heat. I spent some time exploring the fissure, marveling at the strange formations and the hardy plant life clinging to the rock face. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the Earth's immense power and our own insignificance in the face of it. Interestingly, despite the harsh conditions, various species of seaweed have managed to thrive within the crack, a testament to nature's resilience.
For lunch and dinner, I found myself back at Osprey Ras Mohamed. Given the limited options within the park, it's become my go-to spot, and I must admit, the consistently good food and stunning views are a welcome treat after a day of exploration. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and I've even started to recognize a few of the other regulars. It's a small comfort, a sense of community in the midst of my solo adventure. During lunch, I enjoyed some grilled fish, savoring the fresh flavors and the gentle sea breeze. Later, for dinner, I opted for a traditional Egyptian dish, wanting to immerse myself fully in the local culture. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and convivial.
In the late afternoon, before heading back to Osprey Ras Mohamed for dinner, I decided to visit Center Nile Pharaohs Bazaar. As an antique shop owner, I couldn't resist the lure of a local market, hoping to find some unique treasures to bring back to Heidelberg. The bazaar was a sensory overload, a riot of colors, sounds, and smells. Vendors hawked their wares, from pharaonic figurines to traditional textiles, and the air was thick with the aroma of spices and perfumes. I spent a couple of hours wandering through the stalls, haggling with the vendors and examining the various items on display. While I didn't find any museum-quality antiques, I did pick up a few interesting pieces – a hand-painted ceramic plate and a small alabaster carving – that will serve as reminders of my time in Egypt. I even spoke with a vendor named Hans, who spoke fondly about Papyrus, oils, and teas from the region.

As the day drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on the experiences I’d had. From the mythical Magic Lake to the dramatic Earthquake Crack and the bustling Center Nile Pharaohs Bazaar, it had been a day of contrasts, a journey through both the physical and cultural landscapes of Ras Muhammad National Park. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures – a visit to the Gate of Allah and the Birds Observatory – I'm filled with a sense of anticipation. Each day here brings new discoveries, new perspectives, and a deeper appreciation for the wonders of our world. The Gate of Allah, I understand, is a monumental entrance to the park, a symbol of peace and unity. And the Birds Observatory promises a glimpse into the diverse avian life that thrives in this unique ecosystem. I am looking forward to learning more about the armistice between the Egyptians and Israelis at the Gate, as well as seeing some of the unique birds that call this area home.
Back at Osprey Ras Mohamed, as I sit writing this, the sun has set, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. The air is cool and still, and the only sound is the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore. It’s a peaceful end to a day of exploration, a moment to reflect on the beauty and wonder of Ras Muhammad National Park. The hot temperatures during the day, reaching 39°C, gave way to a pleasant 33°C in the evening, making for comfortable reflection. I am grateful for the experiences I've had today, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow will bring.
