A Day of Reflection in Évora
Today in Évora was a journey through the profound and the beautiful, a dance between the stark realities of mortality and the vibrant pulse of life. It’s a day that reminded me of the importance of cherishing every moment and finding beauty in the unexpected. I am so excited to share with you my experiences today.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Botequim da Mouraria. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air, a comforting start before diving into the depths of Évora's history. The simple, honest flavors were exactly what we needed to prepare for the day ahead.

Our first stop was the Chapel of Bones (Capela dos Ossos). I had read about it, of course, but nothing truly prepares you for the experience of standing in a place where the walls are lined with the bones of over 5,000 people. The chapel is part of the larger Church of St. Francis complex. The entrance fee was €6.

As I stepped inside, a chill ran down my spine, a stark reminder of the transient nature of life. The inscription above the entrance, “Nós ossos que aqui estamos, pelos vossos esperamos” (We bones that are here, for yours await), echoed in the silence, a constant whisper of our shared destiny. It was a powerful and sobering moment, one that made me reflect on my own life and the lives of those I hold dear. Hans held my hand tightly; I could feel he was just as moved as I was. Despite the somewhat macabre nature of the chapel, there was a strange sense of peace, a feeling that these were not forgotten souls, but rather a testament to the enduring human spirit.
The Chapel of Bones is a powerful reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing every moment.
The chapel itself wasn't as creepy as I had anticipated. Light streamed in, illuminating the bones. The bones of the walls are from various churches and cities. The Chapel was constructed in the 17th century by Franciscan friars. The friars wanted the chapel to serve as a consoling message.
After the Chapel, we explored the Museu de Évora - Núcleo de Arte Sacra da Igreja das Mercês. Housed in a former church, the museum showcases a collection of sacred artifacts, including sculptures and liturgical objects. Each piece told a story of faith and artistic craftsmanship, offering insights into Portugal's religious history. I found myself particularly drawn to the intricate details of the altarpieces, each a testament to the devotion and skill of the artists who created them. The building itself, Igreja das Mercês, is an essential part of the experience, with its architecture holding centuries of Évora's history.

Leaving the quiet contemplation of the museum, we ventured into Praça do Giraldo, the heart of Évora. The square was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the pleasant October weather. Cafés and shops lined the perimeter, their awnings casting shadows on the cobblestone streets. I couldn't help but feel a sense of joy and connection, surrounded by the energy of this vibrant city.

The Praça do Giraldo is named after Geraldo Sem Pavor, who freed Évora from the Moors in 1165. The square has been the heart of city life for centuries, once serving as a marketplace and a site for public executions during the Inquisition era. Today, it hosts events and festivals throughout the year.
We paused for lunch at Momentos Évora, a charming restaurant in the heart of the city. I savored traditional Portuguese cuisine, the flavors of the Alentejo region dancing on my tongue. The food was simple yet satisfying, a perfect reflection of the local culture. I enjoyed the opportunity to sit and people-watch. I felt very grateful to be able to travel with my friends.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way to SkyBAR Évora. Perched atop a building in the city, the bar offered panoramic views of Évora's skyline. Sipping on a refreshing cocktail, I watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of colors, the ancient monuments below bathed in a warm, golden light. It was the perfect end to a day of reflection and exploration.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Almendres Cromlech, the Aqueduto de Évora, and the Jardim do Paraíso. I am particularly excited about visiting the Almendres Cromlech, as I have always been fascinated by ancient history. I am looking forward to sharing these experiences with you all.
Évora has a way of getting under your skin, of making you contemplate the past while embracing the present. It’s a city that reminds you to slow down, to appreciate the simple things, and to find beauty in the most unexpected places. And as I reflect on today's journey, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a profound and beautiful place. It was a day that I will cherish for years to come.
