A Day of Ancient Echoes and Serene Discoveries

Today in Évora felt like stepping through a portal, where each site whispered tales of civilizations long past. From the mystical stones of Almendres Cromlech to the life-sustaining arches of the Aqueduto de Évora, and the tranquil Jardim do Paraíso, it was a day of profound connections to history and nature. And of course, a little shopping to bring the essence of Évora home with me.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Páteo.

I savored the traditional flavors, fueling up for our journey to the Almendres Cromlech. Hans and I, along with our friends, were eager to explore this ancient site, often called Portugal's Stonehenge. As we drove, the landscape transformed into rolling hills dotted with cork trees, their bark freshly harvested. It reminded me of the simple, yet resilient beauty of my homeland, Ukraine, where nature and history intertwine so seamlessly.

The drive to Almendres Cromlech was an adventure in itself. The unpaved road was bumpy, testing our rental car's suspension. But the anticipation of seeing the megaliths kept our spirits high. Finally, we arrived at the site. Stepping out of the car, I felt a sense of awe wash over me. The stones stood silently against the horizon, their presence both mysterious and grounding.

As we walked among the stones, I couldn't help but imagine the people who erected them thousands of years ago. What rituals did they perform here? What did they observe in the stars? The stones seemed to hold secrets, whispering stories of ancient beliefs and astronomical knowledge.

To walk among these stones is to touch the past, to feel the heartbeat of a civilization that sought to understand the cosmos.

After soaking in the mystical atmosphere of Almendres Cromlech, we drove back towards Évora, our next destination being the Aqueduto de Évora.

This impressive structure, also known as the Aqueduto da Água de Prata (Aqueduct of Silver Water), stretches for kilometers, a testament to 16th-century engineering. Built during the reign of King João III, it was designed to supply fresh water to Évora, a city that often faced scarcity due to its location.

As we walked along the aqueduct, I was struck by its grandeur and functionality. The arches soared above us, a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. It was fascinating to learn that some sections of the aqueduct had houses and shops built into the arches. It's incredible how people adapted and integrated this ancient structure into their daily lives.

We followed the aqueduct into the city center, marveling at how it seamlessly merged with the urban landscape. It was a reminder of the ingenuity and resourcefulness of past generations, who found ways to harness nature's resources for the benefit of their communities.

Lunch at Degust'Ar was a delightful experience, with traditional Alentejo dishes that warmed our souls.

This hidden gem offered a serene escape from the bustling city. As we strolled through the garden, I admired the vibrant flora and meticulously curated landscapes. The garden's design invited us to unwind and connect with nature, a welcome respite after a day of exploring historical sites.

The air was filled with the sweet scent of flowers, and the gentle sounds of birds chirping created a peaceful ambiance. I found a quiet bench and sat for a while, reflecting on the day's adventures. It was a moment of pure bliss, a reminder of the importance of finding beauty and tranquility in the midst of our busy lives.

Before dinner, we made a stop at D'Évora for you Artesanato, Gourmet e Vinhos.

This charming shop was a treasure trove of local crafts, gourmet delights, and regional wines. I picked up a few souvenirs, including a bottle of local wine and some handmade crafts, to remind me of our time in Évora. I even found some beautifully embroidered linens, reminiscent of the traditional Ukrainian patterns I love to create.

For dinner, we indulged in a memorable meal at Fialho, a culinary landmark known for its traditional Alentejo cuisine.
