Echoes of the Past, Delights of the Present

Today was a day of remarkable contrasts, a journey through time that spanned millennia. From the silent stones of ancient dolmens to the lively bustle of a historic town square, Évora continued to reveal its many layers. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – to feel the echoes of the past resonate in the present.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Pane & Vino. It's funny, having spent so much time in Germany, I sometimes crave the familiar comfort of Italian cuisine. Luckily, Pane & Vino offered just that, with a separate vegan menu that catered to everyone’s tastes. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro.

Whispers of the Ancients: Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro

The Great Dolmen of Zambujeiro was truly something to behold. As Europe's largest dolmen, it stands as a testament to the ingenuity and spiritual beliefs of Neolithic people. Standing there, surrounded by these massive stones, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. It's hard to believe that structures like this were built thousands of years ago, with nothing but human strength and determination. The sheer scale of the dolmen is impressive, and the fact that it has stood for so many centuries is a testament to the skill of its builders. The stones seemed to whisper stories of rituals and beliefs long forgotten. I tried to imagine the people who had gathered here, what their lives were like, and what they hoped for. It’s humbling to stand in the presence of such ancient history.

The shelter that protects the dolmen now does take away from the experience a bit. I understand the need for preservation, but I couldn't help but wish I could see it as it was originally intended, open to the sky and stars. Still, even with the shelter, the magnitude of the monument was undeniable. The friends and I spent a good hour wandering around the site, taking photos and simply absorbing the atmosphere. It was a powerful reminder of the long and complex history of this region, and of the many generations who have called it home.

Reaching for the Skies: Castle of Evoramonte

Next on our itinerary was the Castle of Evoramonte, a drive that offered stunning views of the Alentejo countryside. As we approached the castle, perched high on a hill, I was struck by its imposing presence. This was a place of strategic importance, a stronghold that had witnessed centuries of conflict and change. The castle's history is rich and varied, dating back to the 12th century when the region was conquered from the Moors. Over the centuries, it has been expanded and modified, reflecting the changing needs and tastes of its occupants. The distinctive cylindrical towers, added in the 16th century, are a testament to the castle's military significance.

Exploring the castle, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like within its walls. The views from the top were breathtaking, stretching out over the rolling hills and fertile plains of the Alentejo. It was easy to see why this location was so strategically important. From here, one could control the surrounding territory and watch for any signs of approaching enemies. We learned that the Concession of Evoramonte, which ended the Liberal Wars, was signed here in 1834, marking a significant moment in Portuguese history. It’s amazing to think that such a pivotal event took place within these very walls. As we wandered through the castle, we came across displays detailing its history and architecture. It was fascinating to learn about the different phases of construction and the various people who had left their mark on the building.

The Heart of Évora: Giraldo Square Fountain

Our final stop of the day was Giraldo Square, the heart of Évora. After the quiet solitude of the dolmen and the imposing grandeur of the castle, it was a welcome change to be surrounded by the lively energy of this central square. The square is named after Geraldo Sem Pavor (Gerald the Fearless), who conquered Évora from the Moors in 1167. It has been the scene of many important events in the city's history, from public executions to lively markets. Today, it is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists alike, with its charming cafes, shops, and restaurants.

The Giraldo Square Fountain, with its eight spouts symbolizing the main streets of Évora, was a beautiful sight. According to local lore, King Philip III of Spain was so impressed by the fountain that he thought it deserved to be crowned. Although I didn’t try drinking the water, I appreciated the fountain's beauty and its role as a central gathering point in the square. We sat at a café, sipping coffee and people-watching, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the square. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring Évora's historical treasures. The friends enjoyed the moment and soaked in the atmosphere of the square.

Dinner and Reflections

For dinner, we chose Restaurant A Bruxa D'Évora, drawn in by its intriguing name and promise of quality service. The restaurant is fairly new in the historic center of Évora. The meal was a delightful end to a long day, filled with rich flavors and local ingredients. As we savored our meal, we reflected on the incredible journey we had taken through time, from the Neolithic period to the present day. Évora is a city that truly captures the imagination, with its blend of ancient history and vibrant modern life. Later, we stopped by ADC Wine & Food Bar for a nightcap. The bar is known for its Alentejo tasting menu, seasonal soups, regional cheeses, and Portuguese ham. Sipping on local wine, we recounted our favorite moments from the day, already looking forward to what tomorrow would bring. The night was warm, and the atmosphere was relaxed and convivial.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Convent of the Carthusians, Monte da Ravasqueira, and the Igreja de São Joao Evangelista, promising another day of cultural immersion and exploration. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a remarkable place. Évora is a city that stays with you long after you leave, its history and beauty etched into your memory forever.
