Flavors of the Past, Visions of Love

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Parma's culinary and historical soul, a journey that took Élodie and me from the meticulous world of cheese-making to the romantic heights of a medieval castle. Parma continues to enchant us with its blend of gastronomic excellence and historical richness.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Officina Alimentare Dedicata Parma. The cozy atmosphere and the friendly staff made it a perfect start. I savored a cappuccino while Élodie enjoyed a pastry, both of which were delightful. It's amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day of exploration.

Fueled up, we set off to our first destination: the Museum of Parmigiano Reggiano. Nestled in the town of Soragna, within the Castellazzi complex, the museum offered an immersive experience into the history and production of this iconic cheese. The displays took us through the different stages of cheese-making, from the selection of milk to the aging process. Élodie, with her pastry chef's eye, was particularly fascinated by the precision and care that goes into each wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano. The museum itself is housed within a beautiful complex, showcasing the historical tools and equipment used over the centuries. I even opted for the cheese tasting add-on, which was a delightful experience. The tasting was very informative and the cheese was delicious!

The journey through Parma today was a reminder that the best adventures are those that engage all the senses, blending taste, sight, and history into a single, unforgettable experience.

Next on our list was the Museo del Culatello. This museum is housed in the Antica Corte Pallavicina, a stunning location by the Po River. The Museo del Culatello pays homage to the exquisite cured meat. The museum beautifully illustrates how the region’s unique climate and traditions contribute to the creation of this delicacy. We learned about the aging process, the importance of the local microclimate, and the family traditions that have been passed down through generations. I found the displays on the history of pig farming and the stories of the families involved particularly interesting. Élodie enjoyed seeing the antique tools and equipment used in the production of Culatello. This museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the world of cured meats.

After immersing ourselves in Parma’s culinary delights, we drove to Castello di Torrechiara. The castle is perched on a hilltop, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside. Built in the 15th century by Pier Maria Rossi, the castle is not only a formidable fortress but also a testament to a love story. The romantic tale of Pier Maria Rossi and his mistress, Bianca Pellegrini, is woven into the very fabric of the castle, most notably in the Camera d'Oro (Golden Chamber). The frescoes within this room depict scenes of courtly love and chivalry, offering a glimpse into the romantic ideals of the Renaissance period. We wandered through the various rooms, admiring the well-preserved frescoes and imagining life within the castle walls centuries ago. The panoramic views from the castle ramparts were simply stunning, with the rolling hills and vineyards stretching out as far as the eye could see. The castle is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, art, or simply breathtaking views.

As the sun began to set, we made our way back to Parma, stopping at Amelia Parma for a bit of shopping. Élodie found a beautiful dress, a violet gingham number that I know she'll look stunning in. I picked up a few small souvenirs for our friends back home. It’s always nice to bring back a little piece of our travels to share with others. I am glad that we found the store and got a chance to see the great items they had.

For dinner, we chose Osteria Dello Zingaro, a traditional restaurant known for its local cuisine. The Osteria Dello Zingaro was a perfect choice. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic atmosphere, and the staff was incredibly welcoming. We started with a selection of local cured meats, followed by handmade pasta dishes. Élodie chose the tortelli d'erbetta (ricotta and spinach-filled pasta), while I opted for the anolini in brodo (small pasta in broth). For our main courses, Élodie had the Brasato al Barolo (beef braised in Barolo wine), and I went for the Stracotto di Cavallo. Both dishes were rich, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. We finished the meal with a slice of Torta Sbrisolona, a traditional almond cake from the region. The Osteria Dello Zingaro was a perfect end to a day filled with culinary discoveries.

To cap off the evening, we decided to enjoy a drink at Gran Caffè Cavour. The cafe had a lively atmosphere, with locals and tourists mingling and chatting. We ordered a couple of Aperol spritzes and sat outside, soaking in the vibrant energy of the city. It was a perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures.
