Island Detours: Unearthing Naoshima's Unexpected Charms

Today was about embracing the unexpected. While Naoshima is renowned for its world-class museums, I decided to dedicate the day to exploring the island's lesser-known attractions and hidden corners. It turned out to be a rewarding experience, filled with unique art encounters and authentic local flavors. Forget the well-trodden paths; today was about forging my own.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Luke's Table, nestled within My Lodge Naoshima where I'm staying. The restaurant boasts a fusion of French and Japanese cuisine, sourcing local, seasonal ingredients from the Setouchi region. It's incredible to think that Naoshima, despite its small size and limited water resources, cultivates such a bounty of wheat, fruits, and vegetables. As I savored my meal, gazing out at the serene Seto Inland Sea, I felt a sense of anticipation for the day ahead.

First on my itinerary was Shipyard Works by Shinro Ohtake. Venturing out, I stumbled upon these captivating pieces of art along the coast. Ohtake's creations, crafted from materials and techniques mirroring those of real ships, offered a stark contrast to his other works like the Naoshima Bathhouse. It was a reminder that art can take on many forms, each expressing a different facet of the artist's vision.

The March air was crisp and invigorating as I made my way toward Miyanoura Gallery 6, a repurposed pachinko parlor transformed into an exhibition space. The gallery focuses on photography and video installations, and I was intrigued by the current exhibit featuring the Setouchi “ “ Archive, a living laboratory documenting the region's history. It’s fascinating how architect Taira Nishizawa managed to retain the façade of the former pachinko parlor while breathing new life into its interior as an exhibition facility.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After immersing myself in the gallery's thought-provoking displays, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Mikazukishoten. This charming coffee stand and souvenir shop is a local gem, offering specialty coffee and unique, locally produced goods. I learned that the owner, previously involved in the fashion industry, partnered with a coffee expert to create this haven for coffee lovers on Naoshima. The shop's original blends, inspired by Naoshima's mornings and evenings, tempted me to purchase a bag of their signature coffee as a memento of my visit.

Lunch beckoned, and I found myself at Yayoda, a seafood haven renowned for its exquisite Japanese cuisine and fresh, local ingredients. The restaurant is hidden away in Honmura, offering a traditional dining experience with local flavors. Opting for a set menu, I savored the delicate flavors of the sea, each bite a testament to the region's culinary heritage. It was a delightful experience, a true immersion into the local culture.

With my appetite sated, I ventured towards Naoshima Fishing Park, eager to experience a different side of the island. While I didn't partake in any fishing myself, I enjoyed a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, soaking in the tranquil atmosphere and picturesque scenery. The park is well-equipped for both novice and experienced anglers, providing all the necessary amenities for a day of fishing. It was a welcome respite from the art-centric atmosphere of the island, a chance to connect with nature and observe the local way of life.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the island, I made my way to Restaurant EN for dinner. This establishment promised a taste of authentic Japanese cuisine, and it did not disappoint. The ambiance was inviting, the service impeccable, and the food a culinary masterpiece. I savored each dish, reflecting on the day's adventures and the unique experiences Naoshima had offered.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Cultural Melting Bath: Project for Naoshima, Kasaneiwa, and Yokobou Park. I'm also looking forward to trying out some local bars, like Little Plum.

As I write this, back in my room at My Lodge Naoshima, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this enchanting island. It's a place where art and nature intertwine, where the unexpected awaits around every corner. It’s been a day of discovery, a reminder that the most rewarding travel experiences often come from venturing off the beaten path. And as an urban beekeeper, I find the blend of art and nature here particularly inspiring – a testament to the harmonious coexistence of creativity and the environment. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, but for now, I'll drift off to sleep, dreaming of art, seafood, and the gentle lapping of waves against the shore.
