Day 8: A Day of Discovery in Essaouira's Historic Heart
Exploring Essaouira's historic clock, ancient fortress, vibrant artisan workshops, and savoring the flavors of Moroccan cuisine.
Timeless Echoes of Essaouira
Today was a day of wandering through the heart of Essaouira, a place where history whispers from every corner and the vibrant culture captivates the senses. From exploring ancient landmarks to indulging in local cuisine and crafts, Essaouira revealed its many layers, each more fascinating than the last. It’s a journey through time and tradition, and I’m excited to share the highlights with you.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Chaabi Chic. I had heard whispers of its rooftop terrace and authentic Moroccan flavors, and it didn't disappoint. The terrace offered a stunning view of the town, a patchwork of rooftops stretching towards the sea. I savored a traditional Moroccan breakfast, complete with mint tea, while soaking in the serene atmosphere. The zaalouk was especially delicious, and the rooftop views were indeed among the most enjoyable I've found in Essaouira. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to find L'Horloge d'Essaouira. The clock tower stands proudly, a testament to the city’s rich history. The design of the clock tower is unique, combining traditional Moroccan architectural style with modern elements. Easy to find, through the gateway is a lovely little square with trees and great cafes. Although it wasn't possible to climb the tower, its presence was a striking reminder of Essaouira's past. I learned that the clock, which once marked time for three generations of locals, was renovated in 2012, much to the delight of residents and visitors alike.

Next on my itinerary was Borj El Barmil, an 18th-century coastal fortress designed to protect the city from maritime threats. The fortress is characterized by its thick stone walls and well-preserved towers, which serve as an excellent backdrop for photography enthusiasts. As I approached, the blend of Moroccan design and the rugged coastline was striking. The panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the city were breathtaking. The sound of crashing waves and the salty sea breeze created an invigorating atmosphere. I could almost feel the echoes of the past, imagining the guards who once stood watch over the sea. It was a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll, soaking in the vistas and watching local fishermen at work.

The beauty of Essaouira lies not just in its landmarks, but in the everyday moments of discovery.
Lunch was at Seafood Corner, a restaurant recommended for its fresh and beautifully presented seafood. I indulged in a variety of dishes, including grilled fish and calamari. The atmosphere was relaxed, and the service was friendly and welcoming. The seafood was incredibly fresh, a true taste of the Atlantic. The restaurant is known for its great service and friendly staff, and I certainly felt well taken care of. It was a delightful culinary experience.

After lunch, I ventured into the medina in search of the Artisan Craft Atelier. The medina buzzes with creativity in its many workshops. The Artisan Craft Atelier showcases real Moroccan craftsmanship. I was immediately drawn in by the array of handmade products, each reflecting the region's artistry and cultural significance. I watched local artisans create ceramics, textiles, and wooden carvings using techniques passed down through generations. The space felt welcoming, and I spent hours browsing the unique items. I picked up a beautifully crafted wooden carving as a memento of my time in Essaouira. It was a wonderful experience to support the local artisans and take home a piece of Moroccan culture.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Caravane Café for dinner. I had heard about its live music and beautiful interior, and I was eager to experience it myself. The cafe was indeed a sensory delight. The decor was eclectic, with vibrant colors and intricate details. The live music added to the ambiance, creating a lively and festive atmosphere. I enjoyed a delicious meal of Moroccan lamb, savoring the flavors and soaking in the atmosphere. It was the perfect end to a day of exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much Essaouira had to offer. From its historical landmarks to its vibrant arts scene and delicious cuisine, the city had captivated me. I felt a deep connection to the place, a sense of belonging that I hadn't expected. It was more than just a tourist destination; it was a living, breathing community with a rich history and a bright future.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Harbour Scala and the Old Fortress, 18th Century Portuguese canons, as well as unwind at Bar Amarg in the evening. I’m also looking forward to trying out Sam’s Restaurant for breakfast and Restaurant la clé de voûte for lunch. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me.
This evening, as I sit here writing, I'm reminded of why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places; it's about experiencing new cultures, meeting new people, and discovering new parts of myself. Essaouira has given me all of that and more. I’m grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful city and share my experiences with you. Until tomorrow, safe travels!
My friend James had recommended I try the local Pastilla dish, which I will try to remember for tomorrow.
