Solo Adventure to Askja Caldera: A Journey into Iceland's Wild Heart
Day 2: Into the Heart of Iceland's Askja Caldera: A Volcanic Odyssey
Trekking through Iceland's raw beauty: Discover Askja Caldera, swim in Víti crater, and explore lunar landscapes on a solo adventure.
A Day Amongst Giants
Today was the day I'd been anticipating since I first sketched out this Icelandic adventure: delving into the heart of Askja Caldera. The raw, untamed beauty of this volcanic landscape has always called to me, promising an experience unlike any other. Today, that promise was gloriously fulfilled.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kjarr Restaurant & Bar. It's located a bit away from Askja, but I wanted to fuel up properly for the day ahead. The reviews online were stellar, and they didn't lie; the seafood pasta was incredible, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. It was the perfect start to what I knew would be a challenging but rewarding day. I made sure to grab an extra pastry for the road, knowing that options would be limited once I was deep in the highlands.
The drive to Askja was an adventure in itself. The landscape transformed dramatically as I ventured further into the Icelandic interior. Gone were the rolling green hills, replaced by vast expanses of black sand and jagged volcanic rock. The 4x4 handled the rough terrain admirably, though I couldn't help but feel a bit anxious about the 'TripEssentialsForgotten' – that portable water filter would have been a comfort! Still, I pressed on, eager to reach my destination.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I arrived at the Askja trail. The air was crisp and clean, carrying a faint scent of sulfur – a reminder of the volcanic forces simmering beneath the surface. The trail itself was well-marked, though the terrain was uneven, requiring careful footing. I took my time, soaking in the surreal beauty of the surroundings. The landscape was stark and desolate, yet undeniably captivating. It felt like stepping onto another planet, a feeling amplified by the sheer scale of the caldera.

Sometimes, the most profound beauty lies in the starkest landscapes.
As I hiked, I couldn't help but reflect on my life back in Hamburg, tending to my urban beehives. It felt like worlds away from this desolate, volcanic expanse. Yet, both experiences shared a common thread: a deep connection to the natural world. Whether nurturing life in the heart of the city or exploring the raw power of a volcanic landscape, I find solace and inspiration in the rhythms of nature.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly reaching Lake Askja. The sheer scale of the lake was breathtaking. The water, a deep, mesmerizing blue, contrasted sharply with the black volcanic rock that surrounded it. I spent a long time simply gazing at the lake, feeling a sense of awe and wonder at the forces that had shaped this landscape.

I also took the opportunity to hike to Víti crater, a smaller, geothermal lake nestled within the caldera. The hike down to Víti was steep and a bit slippery, but the reward was well worth the effort. The water in Víti was a milky, turquoise blue, and the air was thick with the smell of sulfur. Despite the somewhat pungent odor, I couldn't resist taking a dip in the warm, mineral-rich water. It was an otherworldly experience, swimming in a volcanic crater, surrounded by towering cliffs of black rock.
After my swim, I lingered at Víti for a while, savoring the surreal atmosphere. I then started the trek back, the landscape taking on a different hue as the sun began its descent. The shadows lengthened, accentuating the rugged contours of the volcanic terrain. The experience was meditative, a chance to reflect on the day's adventures and the incredible power of nature.
Before heading back, I stopped by Gígur for a late lunch. The menu was promising, with a focus on local ingredients. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive. I opted for a traditional Icelandic dish, eager to experience the local flavors. It was a satisfying end to a long and exhilarating day.

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Jon Riki. I had heard amazing things about their use of local ingredients and traditional Icelandic cuisine. The reviews were spot on; the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure.

To cap off the day, I decided to visit Kaffi Lára El Grillo Bar for a nightcap. I wanted to experience the local nightlife and unwind after a long day of hiking and exploring. It's known for its own local brewed beer, including the legendary El Grillo lager. The bar had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the locals and fellow travelers. It was a great way to relax and reflect on the incredible experiences of the day.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore the Hverfjall Volcano Trail and the lava field Dimmuborgir. I've heard that Hverfjall offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, and I'm eager to capture some photographs from the summit. Dimmuborgir, with its bizarre rock formations and mythical atmosphere, promises to be another unforgettable experience. And of course, I'm already looking forward to trying out Cafe Munkar for breakfast – starting the day off right is essential for these adventures!
Camping near Askja would have been ideal, but I knew I needed a solid meal and some rest after the long journey. Though camping near Askja is possible, with the nearest campground being a couple hours' drive away, I opted for something closer to Lake Myvatn for the night. The weather forecast for the coming days is a mixed bag, so I'm trying to mentally prepare for anything. Hopefully I'll get to see some unique sights tomorrow before the potential rain hits!
Today was more than just a hike; it was an immersion into the soul of Iceland. The Askja Caldera is a place that humbles you with its vastness and inspires you with its beauty. It's a reminder of the raw power of nature and the importance of preserving these wild, untamed spaces. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible landscape. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I think it's important to remember that the best time to visit Askja is during the summer months, when the roads are open and the weather is milder. But even in summer, the weather can be unpredictable, so it's essential to be prepared for all eventualities. And of course, it's crucial to respect the environment and leave no trace behind, so that future generations can enjoy the beauty of this remarkable place.
It's also worth noting that Askja is located in a remote and rugged area, so it's essential to have a 4x4 vehicle and be comfortable driving on unpaved roads. There are also river crossings to navigate, which can be challenging, especially for inexperienced drivers. If you're not comfortable driving yourself, there are guided tours available, which can be a great option.
Finally, if you're planning to swim in Víti crater, be aware that the path down to the water is steep and slippery, and the water can be quite cold, even in summer. It's also important to check with the local authorities to make sure that swimming is allowed, as conditions can change rapidly. But if you're up for the challenge, swimming in Víti is an unforgettable experience that you'll never forget.
As I reflect on my day at Askja, I'm filled with a sense of awe and wonder. It's a place that truly captures the essence of Iceland's raw and untamed beauty. It's a reminder of the power of nature and the importance of preserving these wild spaces for future generations. And it's a place that I'll never forget.
