Whispers of the Past in Urbino

Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Urbino's rich history. Maximilian and I set out to explore fortresses, piazzas, and ancient abbeys, each holding its own unique story and charm. It's amazing how much history is packed into this relatively small area; every corner seems to whisper tales of the Renaissance.

Our first stop was the imposing Rocca Roveresca. Rising majestically, it’s impossible not to be struck by its grandeur. Built in 1482 by the renowned architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini for the Della Rovere family, this fortress was designed to withstand attacks with its eight-sided structure. As we walked through Porta San Francesco, the main gate, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of stepping back in time.

The Rocca Roveresca isn't just a fortress; it's also home to a fascinating Weapon and History Museum. The fortress is composed of a main fortified tower, walkaways, and a smaller tower connected by a bridge. Legend has it that the design resembles a crossbow when viewed from above. Inside the main tower, we explored reenactments of Renaissance everyday life on several floors, from the kitchen where servants baked bread to the stables where horses were cared for. I found the openings from which soldiers would point their cannons particularly intriguing.

Maximilian, ever the history enthusiast, was captivated by the artillery and armor on the upper floors, dating from the 8th to the 17th century. Swords, shields, and crossbows painted a vivid picture of the challenges faced on the battlefields. The view from the top was breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. I could imagine how vital this strategic location was for defense.

The past is never dead. It's not even past.

After immersing ourselves in the fortress, we made our way to Piazza del Duca. This central square is the heart of Urbino, surrounded by stunning Renaissance architecture. The atmosphere was vibrant, with locals and tourists alike soaking in the beauty of the surroundings. We took some time to simply sit and observe, enjoying the lively ambiance of the piazza. I imagined what it must have been like during the Renaissance when this square was the center of political and social life.

Lunch at La Cucina di Taty was a delightful experience. This charming restaurant offered a taste of authentic Urbino cuisine. Maximilian and I shared a plate of *crescia*, a local flatbread, topped with *prosciutto* and *formaggio di fossa*. Every bite was bursting with flavor, a true representation of the region's culinary heritage. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with friendly staff who made us feel right at home.

Our afternoon was dedicated to exploring the Abbazia di San Vincenzo al Furlo. Located near the Gola del Furlo, this Benedictine abbey dates back to the end of the 10th century. The drive to the abbey was scenic, with rolling hills and lush greenery stretching as far as the eye could see. The abbey itself is nestled on the left bank of the Candigliano River, near the site of the ancient Roman city of Pitinum Mergens. The location was chosen because the abbey could collect offers made to God for the crossing of the Furlo pass, similar to what a pagan temple did before it.

As we approached the abbey, I was struck by its serene and peaceful atmosphere. The abbey has a rich history, having hosted the relics of Saint Vincent, the bishop of Bevagna, after Bevagna was destroyed by the Lombards in the 6th century. In 1011, Saint Romuald of Camaldoli stayed here, and in 1042-1043, Saint Peter Damian was appointed abbot and wrote *Vita beati Romualdi*. The church was originally divided into three naves with an apse, but over the centuries, it has been transformed into a single nave. The simplicity of the architecture added to the sense of tranquility.

Walking through the abbey, I felt a deep connection to the past. The stones seemed to resonate with centuries of prayer and contemplation. The surrounding landscape was breathtaking, with the Gola del Furlo providing a dramatic backdrop. It was a perfect place to reflect and appreciate the beauty of nature and the enduring power of faith.

In the evening, we decided to check out Art Cafè Urbino for a relaxing drink. This bar is known for its good drinks and cool atmosphere. It was a great way to unwind after a day of exploring. The Art Cafè combines quality cocktails, entertainment, contemporary art, and photography. The design is metropolitan, with exposed brick walls, comfortable leather sofas, and soft lighting.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Parco Naturale Regionale Gola della Rossa e di Frasassi and the Church of The Dead. I'm excited to see what these new adventures will bring. It's incredible how much more there is to discover, and I'm eager to make the most of our final day here.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with a sense of gratitude. Urbino has captured my heart with its beauty, history, and charm. It's a place where the past comes alive, and every corner holds a new discovery. I am so glad to be sharing this journey with Maximilian, as we continue to explore the hidden gems of Italy.

Before we head off to bed, I must remember to charge my portable phone charger. I also wish I had brought an umbrella with me on this trip. I guess I will have to remember these items next time!

The Renaissance spirit of Urbino is truly captivating, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
