Day 6: A Day of Coastal Beauty and Medieval Romance in Urbino
Explore the stunning Monte San Bartolo and the romantic Castello di Gradara with Valentina and Maximilian. A day filled with natural beauty and history.
Whispers of the Past and Breathtaking Vistas
Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of natural wonders and historical intrigue. Leaving Urbino behind for a day, Maximilian and I ventured out to explore the coastal landscapes and delve into a story of love and tragedy. It's always fascinating how a change of scenery can shift your perspective, and today was no exception. I was eager to discover the secrets hidden within the rolling hills and ancient walls that awaited us.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Piadineria L'Aquilone. The aroma of freshly baked piadinas filled the cozy space. Maximilian ordered one with prosciutto and cheese, while I opted for a vegetarian version with grilled vegetables. Each bite was a burst of flavor, the perfect start to our day of exploration. I made a mental note to try and recreate these at home in Heidelberg – maybe add a Puerto Rican twist!
With our appetites satisfied, we set off towards Parco Naturale Monte San Bartolo. The drive itself was stunning, winding through rolling hills dotted with vineyards and olive groves. As we approached the park, the landscape transformed into dramatic cliffs overlooking the Adriatic Sea. The air was fresh and crisp, carrying the scent of wildflowers and sea salt.

We parked the car and decided to explore one of the hiking trails. The path led us along the edge of the cliffs, offering breathtaking panoramic views. Maximilian, ever the photographer, was in his element, snapping away at the stunning scenery. I loved watching him get so engrossed in capturing the perfect shot; it reminded me of our early days when we first started traveling together. The vibrant blues of the Adriatic contrasted sharply with the lush green hills, creating a mesmerizing tapestry of color. We even spotted a few peregrine falcons soaring overhead, their graceful flight adding to the magic of the moment. The Marche region truly knows how to do beauty.
The beauty of nature and the weight of history often intertwine, creating moments of profound reflection.
After a refreshing hike, we continued our journey to Castello di Gradara. As we approached the medieval town, the imposing fortress loomed in the distance, perched atop a hill. The castle walls, remarkably well-preserved, transported us back in time. I could almost hear the echoes of knights and noble families who once walked those same ramparts. It was easy to see why Gradara is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

We entered the castle through the main gate and found ourselves in a charming courtyard. The air was thick with history, and I felt a sense of awe as I imagined the events that had unfolded within those walls. We decided to take a guided tour to learn more about the castle's past. Our guide, a passionate local historian, shared fascinating stories about the noble families who had ruled Gradara over the centuries. He recounted tales of battles, political intrigues, and of course, the tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca.
The tale of Paolo and Francesca, immortalized by Dante in his Divine Comedy, is deeply intertwined with the history of Gradara Castle. Francesca da Rimini, a noblewoman forced into marriage with the older and less attractive Gianciotto Malatesta, found love with his younger brother Paolo. Their affair was discovered, and Gianciotto, consumed by rage, murdered them both within the castle walls. The story is a poignant reminder of the destructive power of jealousy and the enduring allure of forbidden love. As our guide spoke, I couldn't help but feel a sense of melancholy, imagining the young lovers meeting their tragic end in such a beautiful place.
Maximilian and I walked hand-in-hand through the castle's various rooms, each filled with antique furniture, tapestries, and artwork. We climbed the Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower), which offered breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. From up there, we could see the Adriatic Sea shimmering in the distance, and the rolling hills stretching as far as the eye could see. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to appreciate the beauty and history that surrounded us.
For lunch, we dined at Ristorante Il Castello, located within the castle walls. The restaurant offered a charming medieval ambiance, with stone walls, wooden beams, and candlelight. Maximilian ordered a traditional Marche dish of vincisgrassi, a rich and decadent lasagna, while I savored a plate of handmade pasta with truffle sauce. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was perfect. It felt like we had stepped back in time, sharing a meal in a medieval tavern.

After lunch, we explored the rest of the town of Gradara, wandering through its narrow cobblestone streets lined with artisan shops and charming cafes. I couldn't resist popping into a few boutiques, picking up some local handicrafts as souvenirs. Maximilian, meanwhile, found a quaint bookstore and spent some time browsing through its collection of historical novels.
As the sun began to set, we drove back to Urbino, our hearts full of memories from our day of exploration. Before heading back to our accommodation, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Osteria al Tre, a charming restaurant in Urbino known for its traditional cuisine. The osteria had a warm and inviting atmosphere, with exposed brick walls and rustic wooden furniture. We ordered a selection of local specialties, including handmade pasta with ragu, grilled meat, and a delicious panna cotta for dessert. The food was hearty and flavorful, the perfect end to a day of adventure.

I also popped into La Botteguccia Snc Di Mercantini Sara E C., a local shop I had spotted earlier in the day. It was filled with unique gifts and souvenirs, perfect for bringing a piece of Urbino back home with me. I picked up a beautifully crafted ceramic piece, a reminder of the artistry and craftsmanship we had encountered throughout our travels.

As we savored our meal, we reflected on the day's experiences. From the stunning coastal landscapes of Parco Naturale Monte San Bartolo to the romantic atmosphere of Castello di Gradara, it had been a day filled with beauty, history, and a touch of tragedy. These are the moments that make travel so rewarding, the chance to connect with different cultures, learn about the past, and create lasting memories with the ones we love.
Tomorrow, we are planning to stay local and explore more of Urbino itself, including the Rocca Roveresca, Piazza del Duca, and Abbazia di San Vincenzo al Furlo. I’m particularly looking forward to visiting Piazza del Duca. I’ve read so much about it, and can’t wait to experience its unique atmosphere firsthand.
But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure in this beautiful corner of Italy.
I am so happy Maximilian and I are experiencing this together. It is something I will treasure forever.
Until tomorrow!
